Rivers were primarily used for transportation in early Florida before roads and railroads were constructed. The Ocklawaha River was extensively used by steamboats in the 1800s and early 1900s to transport people and goods. As railroads were built, river transportation declined. Outside of cities, early Florida mainly had paths and trails instead of roads.
