Getting you there Quicker
● By train - average journey time is between 30% and
43% faster than by car.
● 1 in 10 journeys on the M1 have an average speed of
just 37.7mph.
● Get passengers to meetings on time. Since December
2008 over 92.3% of London services ran on time.
● Passengers can’t work while they drive, but they can
work when travelling by train. Every minute of their
journey can be put to good use.

We’re making sure that by

have clear information about
shutting down engines at
stations
Driving our trains efficiently
A group of drivers and managers have been working together to share
experiences on safe, punctual and fuel-efficient driving. By March 2013 we’ll
prepare some simple advice to help every driver.
Our timetable
Work to increase line speed
and reduce journey times will
mean we burn more fuel.
By November 2012, we’ll
understand what effect this
will have on our carbon
footprint

Meridian Energy Saving Mode
Energy Saving Mode is now working well.
We have seen the planned reduction in
the number of hours each engine runs,
but we’re looking at how we can make
even better use of the technology.
Diesolift Fuel Additive
We’ve been using Diesolift in our 15x fleet. The
additive is designed to improve fuel economy and
reduce emissions.
Unfortunately, we’ve had various problems with
the fuel in these units and we’re still working to
find out what effect Diesolift is having on this.
We’ll keep you posted…
Driving Trains Efficiently
After good initial progress, we have had to
temporarily postpone the work with our
volunteer drivers to investigate fuel-
efficient driving.
This is back in the 2012/13 Environmental
Plan so watch this space…

WE AIM TO USE 10% LESS ENERGY IN OUR BUILDINGS BY 2014
OUR PLANS FOR 2012/13
Fitting Smart Meters to our stations
Our larger buildings are already fitted with smart
electricity meters.
Working with our sister company, South West
Trains, we’ll install smart meters at more stations
so that we can get accurate data.
Reporting our energy use
Our managers need good information so
that they can work with you to manage
energy use at your site.
We’ll improve the energy reporting
system we’ve created to meet that need.
Upgrading our Stations
Major works at Nottingham & Leicester give us a great opportunity to
improve energy efficiency. We’ll install advanced, automatic lighting
controls to ensure we get the best light levels around our stations.
We’re also working to improve insulation of buildings where we’re
doing upgrade works

Station Environment Champions
Each route area has an Environment
Champion to help implement energy
efficiency and environmental
improvements.
As well as organising local events for our
annual Green Week, they have helped to:
•Identify areas for improved lighting
controls
•Implemented the new recycling scheme
•Carried out awareness work including our
first Station Energy Awareness Week
Keeping the heat in
The team at Etches Park have shown how
a simple measure can have a big impact.
By making sure doors to the south
maintenance sheds were closed when not
being used, Etches Park reduced their gas
use by over 50% in 2011/12
Investing in Energy Efficiency
During 2011/12, we have been working
with Network Rail to arrange investments
in our stations for energy efficiency.
We’re going to be installing more efficient
lighting in a number of stations over the
next few months.
We have also secured funding for further
lighting improvements in Network Rail’s
Control Period 5 budgets (2015-19)
A WAY WITH WASTE
In 2011, we introduced a new way with waste. This has helped
to increase our recycling rates from just 35% to over 70%
After collecting waste from our stations, SITA UK take our waste to
a number of different waste sorting facilities. Once sorted, the
different materials are then taken on to recyclers who make
something new out of it.

We’ll introduce new public recycling facilities at our
key stations including newspaper recycling bins and
new recycling points

With ideas from our On-train teams,
we believe we can find a way to
improve waste recycling on board
our services.
Improve our recycling at St Pancras
International
Our recycling facilities at St Pancras International
are provided by Network Rail. We’ll work with them
to improve our arrangements for recycling of both
train and office wastes.

Over the last 2 years, our stations
teams have organised and been
involved with numerous community
events including planting flowers
and painting at our stations, to
community pageants and art
competitions for children.
EMS Recertification
This year our Engineering
Team were successfully re-
certified to the International
Standard for Environmental
Management, ISO14001.
Cyclescheme
Our Cyclescheme benefit has
helped over 100 people get
new cycles and safety gear
and say ‘on yer bike’ to tax –

Charity Charter Trains
Together we’ve supported several
fundraising charter trains. The company
has given the train and our colleagues
have donated their time and skills.
One of the most successful charity charters
was the Mid-Norfolk Marauder which
raised £25,000 for Railway Children
Staff Fundraising
Throughout the year people all across the
company have raised money for charities
ranging from Railway Children to
MacMillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie,
the Poppy Appeal and countless others.
Direct Donations
By completing your annual Tell Me
Survey, together we completed
enough surveys for the company to
donate nearly £1500 to 3 charities
Supporting Fundraisers
Since launching our Employee Charity
Support programme, we’ve donated £2,500
and 132 pairs of First Class tickets to
London for individuals who are fundraising

going to audit our systems and
controls to make sure we’re as
good as we can be.

Charitable Support
We’ll make it clearer for everyone how the
company supports charitable activities and
how you can get support for your
fundraising.
We’ll provide an area on the Platform with
all the information you need.
Community Events
In 2012/13, more and more people
will have the chance to get out and
about in our local communities,
from community work around our
network to fundraising and
volunteering.
The Environment
● Environmental Plan available to download from
eastmidlandstrains.co.uk
● We are working in partnership with Metro newspapers and SITA
UK to install recycling facilities for the general public at our
stations.
● We are putting the final pieces together for a project to invest
£0.25m in improving station lighting and make it more energy
efficient
● As part of the station redevelopments at Leicester and Nottingham,
we are installing a lighting control system called LiGo which
automatically switches lights on and off and automatically dims
them in response to the natural light available.
Cycles
● We have increased cycle storage across all stations
● Have plans to double existing storage as funds become available
● We have just bid for £2.7m from ATOC to achieve the above.
● Sheffield Cycle Hub is due to begin in January.
● Won Partnership Working Award in Parliament two weeks ago -
awarded by the All Party Cycle Committee-Examples include:
● working with Derby City Council to double the level of cycle provision
at Derby station, as well as key improvement schemes at Leicester
and Nottingham stations working in partnership with Leicester City
Council and Nottingham City Council.
● Establishing an EMT Cycle Forum in early 2013.
● Developing an EMT Cycle Strategy.

Getting you there Quicker ● By train - average journey time is between 30% and 43% faster than by car. ● 1 in 10 journeys on the M1 have an average speed of just 37.7mph. ● Get passengers to meetings on time. Since December 2008 over 92.3% of London services ran on time. ● Passengers can’t work while they drive, but they can work when travelling by train. Every minute of their journey can be put to good use.

A SMALLER CARBON FOOTPRINT fuel saving on trains OUR OBJECTIVE IS TO MAKE OUR TRAINS 5% MORE FUEL EFFICIENT DURING THE FRANCHISE OUR PLANS FOR 2012/13 Shutting down engines We’re making sure that by December 2012, our drivers have clear information about shutting down engines at stations Driving our trains efficiently A group of drivers and managers have been working together to share experiences on safe, punctual and fuel-efficient driving. By March 2013 we’ll prepare some simple advice to help every driver. Our timetable Work to increase line speed and reduce journey times will mean we burn more fuel. By November 2012, we’ll understand what effect this will have on our carbon footprint
  • 15. A SMALLER CARBON FOOTPRINT fuel saving on trains – Project updates Meridian Energy Saving Mode Energy Saving Mode is now working well. We have seen the planned reduction in the number of hours each engine runs, but we’re looking at how we can make even better use of the technology. Diesolift Fuel Additive We’ve been using Diesolift in our 15x fleet. The additive is designed to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions. Unfortunately, we’ve had various problems with the fuel in these units and we’re still working to find out what effect Diesolift is having on this. We’ll keep you posted… Driving Trains Efficiently After good initial progress, we have had to temporarily postpone the work with our volunteer drivers to investigate fuel- efficient driving. This is back in the 2012/13 Environmental Plan so watch this space…

A SMALLER CARBON FOOTPRINT saving energy in our buildings WE AIM TO USE 10% LESS ENERGY IN OUR BUILDINGS BY 2014 OUR PLANS FOR 2012/13 Fitting Smart Meters to our stations Our larger buildings are already fitted with smart electricity meters. Working with our sister company, South West Trains, we’ll install smart meters at more stations so that we can get accurate data. Reporting our energy use Our managers need good information so that they can work with you to manage energy use at your site. We’ll improve the energy reporting system we’ve created to meet that need. Upgrading our Stations Major works at Nottingham & Leicester give us a great opportunity to improve energy efficiency. We’ll install advanced, automatic lighting controls to ensure we get the best light levels around our stations. We’re also working to improve insulation of buildings where we’re doing upgrade works

A SMALLER CARBON FOOTPRINT saving energy in buildings – update Station Environment Champions Each route area has an Environment Champion to help implement energy efficiency and environmental improvements. As well as organising local events for our annual Green Week, they have helped to: •Identify areas for improved lighting controls •Implemented the new recycling scheme •Carried out awareness work including our first Station Energy Awareness Week Keeping the heat in The team at Etches Park have shown how a simple measure can have a big impact. By making sure doors to the south maintenance sheds were closed when not being used, Etches Park reduced their gas use by over 50% in 2011/12 Investing in Energy Efficiency During 2011/12, we have been working with Network Rail to arrange investments in our stations for energy efficiency. We’re going to be installing more efficient lighting in a number of stations over the next few months. We have also secured funding for further lighting improvements in Network Rail’s Control Period 5 budgets (2015-19)
  • 18. A WAY WITH WASTE In 2011, we introduced a new way with waste. This has helped to increase our recycling rates from just 35% to over 70% After collecting waste from our stations, SITA UK take our waste to a number of different waste sorting facilities. Once sorted, the different materials are then taken on to recyclers who make something new out of it. A WAY WITH WASTE HAVING INCREASED OUR RECYCLING RATES TO OVER 70%, WE NOW WANT TO MAKE CONTINUAL IMPROVEMENTS FOR THE REST OF THE CURRENT FRANCHISE OUR PLANS FOR 2012/13 We want passengers to help recycle their waste at our stations We’ll introduce new public recycling facilities at our key stations including newspaper recycling bins and new recycling points Recycling on Train With ideas from our On-train teams, we believe we can find a way to improve waste recycling on board our services. Improve our recycling at St Pancras International Our recycling facilities at St Pancras International are provided by Network Rail. We’ll work with them to improve our arrangements for recycling of both train and office wastes.

BEING A RESPONSIBLE BUSINESS BEING A RESPONSIBLE BUSINESS IS ABOUT MANAGING ENVIRONMENTAL RISKS, PLAYING A PART IN OUR LOCAL COMMUNITIES AND SUPPORTING CHARITIES Community Events Over the last 2 years, our stations teams have organised and been involved with numerous community events including planting flowers and painting at our stations, to community pageants and art competitions for children. EMS Recertification This year our Engineering Team were successfully re- certified to the International Standard for Environmental Management, ISO14001. Cyclescheme Our Cyclescheme benefit has helped over 100 people get new cycles and safety gear and say ‘on yer bike’ to tax – find out more on The Platform

BEING A RESPONSIBLE BUSINESS BEING A RESPONSIBLE BUSINESS IS ABOUT MANAGING ENVIRONMENTAL RISKS, PLAYING A PART IN OUR LOCAL COMMUNITIES AND SUPPORTING CHARITIES Charity Charter Trains Together we’ve supported several fundraising charter trains. The company has given the train and our colleagues have donated their time and skills. One of the most successful charity charters was the Mid-Norfolk Marauder which raised £25,000 for Railway Children Staff Fundraising Throughout the year people all across the company have raised money for charities ranging from Railway Children to MacMillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, the Poppy Appeal and countless others. Direct Donations By completing your annual Tell Me Survey, together we completed enough surveys for the company to donate nearly £1500 to 3 charities Supporting Fundraisers Since launching our Employee Charity Support programme, we’ve donated £2,500 and 132 pairs of First Class tickets to London for individuals who are fundraising

BEING A RESPONSIBLE BUSINESS Managing our environmental risks OUR PLANS FOR 2012/13 Environmental Procedures We’re going to introduce the best-practice approach used by our Engineering depots to the rest of our business. We will also introduce the checking and audit processes to make sure that this is effective at managing our most important environmental risks Environmental Training To support the development of these procedures, we will provide managers with the training, information and guidance they need to make sure our systems work well. Controlling our biggest environmental risk Storing and handling our fuel is our biggest environmental risk. We’re going to audit our systems and controls to make sure we’re as good as we can be.

BEING A RESPONSIBLE BUSINESS BEING PART OF OUR LOCAL COMMUNITY AND SUPPORTING CHARITY WORK OUR PLANS FOR 2012/13 Charitable Support We’ll make it clearer for everyone how the company supports charitable activities and how you can get support for your fundraising. We’ll provide an area on the Platform with all the information you need. Community Events In 2012/13, more and more people will have the chance to get out and about in our local communities, from community work around our network to fundraising and volunteering.

The Environment ● Environmental Plan available to download from eastmidlandstrains.co.uk ● We are working in partnership with Metro newspapers and SITA UK to install recycling facilities for the general public at our stations. ● We are putting the final pieces together for a project to invest £0.25m in improving station lighting and make it more energy efficient ● As part of the station redevelopments at Leicester and Nottingham, we are installing a lighting control system called LiGo which automatically switches lights on and off and automatically dims them in response to the natural light available.

Cycles ● We have increased cycle storage across all stations ● Have plans to double existing storage as funds become available ● We have just bid for £2.7m from ATOC to achieve the above. ● Sheffield Cycle Hub is due to begin in January. ● Won Partnership Working Award in Parliament two weeks ago - awarded by the All Party Cycle Committee-Examples include: ● working with Derby City Council to double the level of cycle provision at Derby station, as well as key improvement schemes at Leicester and Nottingham stations working in partnership with Leicester City Council and Nottingham City Council. ● Establishing an EMT Cycle Forum in early 2013. ● Developing an EMT Cycle Strategy.
