2. Notes From Mrs. Mizell
Dear Parents,
We thank each and every one that has made time to
eat lunch with their child this quarter and encourage those of
you who haven’t made it yet, to come and join us. We also
thank the volunteers who have helped us run off copies and
help shelve books and other tasks that have helped us have a
great start to the school year. We encourage you to keep us
informed of change of address, email, and phone numbers.
Weather is turning cold, so please label all jackets, coats and
sweaters.
We ask for your participation and support. Our goal is
to provide your child, our students, with a positive learning
environment.

Loose Tooth

Wiggle. Wiggle. My loose tooth.
Can’t wait to pull it out.
It feels funny in my mouth.
Bit an apple. Crunch! It’s still there.
Chewed some caramel.
Is it gone? Nope. Wiggle. Wiggle.
Try to pull it out? Ouch! That hurts.
Tie a string. Slam the door. BAM!
Wiggle. Wiggle. Still there.
Dad can help. Open wide!
Don’t cry. Close your eyes.
POP! OK. All done.

2 Reading

For the Month of February we are
focusing on Non-Fiction Books.
Writing
For the Month of February we are
working on Poetry.
Math
Our focus in math for February
is tens and ones (addition & subtraction).
Science/Social Studies
We will be learning about Plants
and Animals.

9. Reader’s Workshop:Nonfiction Reading; We are reading
books to get true information on different topics. We
are also reading biographies…Students need to be
reading at least 20 minutes each night. Log reading at
home.
Writer’s Workshop: Nonfiction books on chosen topics. Each
student is sharing as an expert on a topic and teaching what
he/she knows through the use of nonfiction.
Math Workshop: Multiplication and Division…be learning
multiplication facts 0-12. Practice every night at home!!!!

10. 4th Grade Happenings
Reading- Social Issues Book Clubs. We will learn that reading can teach us about issues that
exist in the world and in our lives. Remember to read 30 minutes each night. Talk about
what you read with someone.
Writing- Literary essay. Literary essay offers a bridge between reading and writing. It helps
students learn that writing can be a way to not only hold on to one’s thinking about a
particular subject or, more specifically, about a text but also to clarify and elaborate on that
thinking.
Science- We will be studying the states of matter and basic electricity. We will be doing lots
of hands on activity.
Math- We will be finishing up landmarks and large numbers and beginning a unit on
fractions and decimals. Please continue to practice multiplication combinations at home.

11. Look What’s Happening in 5th Grade
Math/Science
In math, we will continue studying fractions. We
will be learning how to add, subtract, multiply, and
divide fractions. After break in January, we will be
studying geometry-different types of polygons.
In science, we will be studying matter in
December and will begin a unit on light and energy
in January. Both classes had a great time
working on the ecosystems unit.
Literacy/Social Studies
In reading we are continuing our study of Nonfiction reading and
will move into nonfiction research projects.
In writing, we are wrapping up our information books and will
move into research based argument essay.
The kids are finishing up their projects on exploration, and then
