I am humbled by a year of incredible growth.
We have opened so many new and exciting doors and partnered with like-minded souls who deeply connect to our passion and our purpose. These partnerships have allowed us to extend ourselves even further and gift especially South African youth-at-risk with our enabling platform, a TRI toolkit and our SmilingOne Change Agents!
2018/19 has allowed for years of deeply focused Change Agent work to move to the next level! I love how the journey guides us. It keeps revealing the steps to take. At times we are called to pause and at other times we are called to stretch. It has been a year of huge stretch. It continues to ask for more and that we bow to the process. Only when we bow can we open our hearts and minds to purify our intent. We are here to SERVE a much greater purpose than ourselves. We want to cause ripples of change which will echo in the hearts and minds of those we touch. We want to leave a lasting footprint and be woven into the tapestry of lives transformed forever. Just like nature every single process is connected. WE are all connected! There is a greater rhythm to honour - a grand symphony. We have since 2008 brought The Responsible Individual™ (TRI)
and our Circles of Change™ (COC) Education into South
African Correctional Centres - the first seed was planted by our
Founder Karina Andersen in Brandvlei Maximum.
One of our great strengths is our highly unique team of Responsibility
Coaches and Changes Agents. Each one of them we have met behind bars;
to each one we have extended an invite to change and to actively participate
in the journey of becoming a responsible individual, to co-create a profound
and life altering experience. Today they carry the seed with them into
projects in schools and their communities. We are highlighting some of these
inspiring projects in this report.
We continue to extend invites and invest in educating Change Agents in our
Correctional Centres. We have learnt to not underestimate the significance of
touching lives - even if it is just for a moment. There is an incarcerated population
of more than 160,000 men. Let’s utilise the potential!
2018/19 Activity: Malmesbury Medium & Pollsmoor Medium A
2019/20 Activity: We continue to nurture our partnership with the Department
of Correctional Services and educate Change Agents in SA correctional centres.
We re-commit to our focus on sentenced offenders who have the gift of time to
attend their TRI & COC studies. We partner with minimum two correctional
centres every year.

Parolee Support | Bradly Hess
Bradly Hess reintegrated June 2019 after nine years of COC Educational Training
with SmilingOne inside SA prison. He shares of his reintegration process:
“I have never felt so blessed, honoured and scared at the same time for coming
back to my community. I didn’t know what to expect but I had prepared my heart,
my mind and my emotions for what I thought was ahead of me. I have four family
members who love me dearly and then I have the SmilingOne Family who has
been of great support for nine years inside prison and since day one outside of
the prison.
I have a great purpose to live! Every day when I wake up, I still have challenges.
When I move into my projects I feel and hear how others are also facing difficult
life challenges, even more challenging than me. These projects allow me to
deeply value the people I meet as well as the role I play in their lives. I have
recently lost my Granny and three weeks ago I lost my Father, whom I have never
gotten to know and never asked the questions that I kept in my heart. So many
feelings and thoughts unanswered - at times I felt like giving up. Then I look at
myself and life around me and ask myself the question: “Who is responsible for
your happiness, your state of being, your potential, Bradly?” I remind myself that
no one in this world is responsible - it is up to me. I am a life-long student. I am
willing to learn. I look at my life and I am thankful for this opportunity, where I rise
to observe and appreciate the value this life brings.
My re-integration is my inspiration and my tool to avail myself to the
purpose of making a change.
I have felt inspired to plow back into our Correctional Centres, as I can relate to
their heartfelt challenges and circumstances. I have learned more about myself,
my values and the weaknesses I never wanted to work on. I have found ways to
deal with my anger, lack of motivation and self-confidence. I have taken
responsibility for my thoughts, my past and my present situation.
In my processes in Pollsmoor and Malmesbury Correctional Centres I work with
inmates who also want to change for the better, but don’t know how. With my TRI
and COC Educational toolkit I can be a resource of inspiration to them. The
SmilingOne family never gave up on me and I am following in their footsteps,
making sure that I also plant seeds of change. It is a very valuable task as you
assist shaping these individuals to become Responsible Individuals and get a
new lease on life. It is a great reminder of where I come from; it is teaching me to
value my freedom, value myself and value the world around me. It takes great
courage to walk this journey with others, but I will never forget. It was because of
others who cared, supported and believed in me that I am a Change Agent
today.”
10. RAVENSMEAD PROJECT

High School one month
after his reintegration in July
2018. He chose this school
as his COC caring project
and offered his time
voluntary at the school,
exposing them to The
Responsible Individual™
opportunity.
Kirsh Family Foundation
granted us in the beginning
of 2019 a 3-year
sponsorship for this project
with Bradly as the project
lead.
The project is a twin project
to our Michausdal
Secondary School Project in
Cradock, sponsored by the
DG Murray Trust.
The objectives were
workshopped in
collaboration with DGMT
leading up to the official
Cradock Project start Dec
2018 and adopted as a
model in the Ravensmead
School Project which
launched March 2019
(new financial year).
“As a SmilingOne Change Agent I decided to venture into this project because I
can personally relate to many of the students challenges and the circumstances
they grow up in.
I feel blessed to be a part of such a great project. It is challenging but I am
learning every step of the way.
During the year 2018 I went to Ravensmead High School several times a week to
give them a taste of what SmilingOne can do for them and the benefits of The
Responsible Individual™ (TRI) and our Circles of Change™ (COC) educational
platform. We quickly noticed that our presence at the school was openly
received. Both students as well as teachers welcomed our platform of sharing at
the school. We also observed the challenges the teachers experienced and how
these impacted them in doing their best.
Our communities are really suffering and trying their best to stay head above
waters in our crime ridden society and because of that our kids loose their sense
of hope, faith and trust in themselves and others.
Our main objective at the school is to unlock the students hidden potential
and help them discover that they have a champion within and can
champion change in their lives. It is not an easy task and requires a united
front. We aim to build a great unity, a strong and inspiring Partnership amongst
students, parents and teachers. This is the true essence of being part of
something bigger. The more we can stand and work together and share and
give of our energy into this process, the more everyone can become and the
greater is the difference that can be made.
The interactive space with the students has been an important steppingstone for
both us as SmilingOne Change Agents and the teachers. From July 2018 until
today (May 2019) I have experienced that it is only through working in
partnership that we can reach the hearts and shape the values and vision of
students and divert them from crime, drugs, gangsterism and all other
destructive things that can imprison their mindsets and their beautiful potential.”

our Champion of Change APP (in progress). LRMG include our Change Agents in their VM events.

Ravensmead School Process with Project Lead Change Agent Bradly Hess. This sponsorship commenced March

13. CRADOCK PROJECT
Michausdal Secondary High School
5 Key Objectives | Testimony
Principal’s testimony – Mr. Rudi Van Rooyen:
“I have noticed that most of the students in Franklin’s [SmilingOne] programme
are learners at risk of dropping out, students who are and was pregnant and
students with behavioral problems.” He continues: “There was one learner, at
risk of dropping out, the learner’s behaviour was uncontrollable. The learner
had no ambition, he was disrespectful towards teachers (teachers were very
scared of him), students and people in his nearest environment. I was amazed
how Franklin made a breakthrough with this student. No teacher nor I could do
it. The student was referred to Mr. Esau who deeply looked into this
matter. We afterwards learned that the boy had deep pain involving
confidential issues in his life (Franklin never shared the confidentiality
issues with us). I don’t know what tools Franklin used, but I was amazed by
the change in this young boy’s life.”

CIRCLES OF CHANGE™ – A PLATFORM OF SHARING
In March 2018 we slowly started to expose 400 Students at the Michausdal Senior Secondary School to The
Responsible Individual™ (TRI) - our personal values-based leadership program. Our aim then was to start a pilot
program and collect data to better understand the shape our program could take when bringing our approach
on a full time basis to Cradock, Eastern Cape in collaboration with a sponsor such as DGMT.
Today we have almost 530 Students being impacted by the Cradock, Michausdal School Project.
It has been a valuable lesson in so many ways. We are grateful to the Michausdal community and the School for
accepting our program and understanding the part we as SmilingOne can play in their Students unlocking their
potential and becoming future leaders. It has been evident from our interactions at the school that they are
grateful and appreciative towards the program – they have had an opportunity to discover the sacred space of
Sharing.
Some of the Students have shared that they do not feel loved and others that there is no trust in their lives. This
has kept them away from seeking advice, from learning about themselves and being more pro-active in working
towards their dreams and goals.
I understand. It also stopped me from listening to my parents and listening to the advice of the elderly people in
my life, who understood the Challenges of being a Teenager. I have experienced in my own journey as a Change
Agent how I have been distant from people – how I have not accepted responsibility and blamed others for my
failures and mistakes as a Teenager. When the truth was that I should have invited support, advice and guidance
in my life as a Youth – in order to become better equipped to deal with my Challenges at that time.
Today as a Change Agent I sense them deeply, I can relate to all the Students in the Project. They give me an
opportunity to walk with them. They trust me to share in their Challenges. They invite me into their hearts and
minds to Care.

Ms Van Sasie – English and Life Orientation Teacher
How did you think The Responsible Individual (TRI) classes have impacted your Students:
-Last quarter I saw changes in a few Students in Grade 9. The girl Evandre was showing great
changes – she is more outspoken. This quarter I have seen the Students become more eager and
interactive
-I have also seen changes in the grade 8’s. I left them to see if they were going to make a noise or
do their work. I came back and they actually did my work. It was very surprising – they actually
listen now.
Would you say that TRI classes assists Teachers to have better Students?
Yes, I think that if you concentrate and listen to the Teacher you can achieve many things and I think that through TRI classes
the Students learn to concentrate, interact and listen to the Teacher. When you are being responsible it means you have to do
your homework. In TRI they get taught that and it is not something that we as Teachers can Teach.
What would you say is the best moment you have experienced in TRI classes for the Students?
- For me it was their curiosity. They are curious to see what they will learn today because TRI is not a set structure. They are
always curious to see are we going to talk about drugs today or about our family. They participate very freely for it is not like
Maths, they can speak from their own personal knowledge.
Would you recommend TRI classes to all the Students at school?
- I would, so that the learners can carry themselves more respectfully, take out their books and write something down.
- Not many Students care about life orientation and they do not think you can do something with it. With the TRI inspiration
they always write something and are more responsible.

How did you think The Responsible Individual (TRI) classes have impacted your Students:
-The second quarter I started to see changes. They have been more excited about the classes.
-When it comes to my class they are totally different students than what they are in TRI classes.
I think it is the topics that you cover. We do not speak about that stuff usually (about the
responsible individual, alcohol abuse, their behaviour, all that stuff. I strictly stick to the
syllabus so I do not touch subjects of the TRI). What you speak about is what is happening to
them on a daily bases. I see they enjoy it very much.
-Previously I would rarely see a change of attitude in my Creative Arts or Life Orientation
classes . I would see no interest from them. However now I do see how they have changed - I
see more respect and comprehension.
-Most of the Learners were shy but since the TRI classes started I have seen them open up.
-Now they are more confident. I do not have to drag it out of them.
Are there specific Students that you have seen the changes in:
- I have this one class where most of the boys were up and down, now they are more relaxed.
- There was this one boy who was very naughty – now he is the one talking to the guys and asking them to be quiet and do
their work first before we discuss our things. Everyone used to laugh at his jokes now when he is quiet the rest is quiet -
now he is the responsible one in the class.
Would you recommend TRI classes to all of the other classes:
Definitely, because of the changes I see. Even if it would be just one person that can change it is more than enough. That one
person influence the rest! I recommend TRI to the whole school – especially for the grade 11 & 12. They are going to the next
level of their life.
16. CHAMPION OF CHANGE
OUR APP PROJECT | SPONSOR LRMG
Imagine a new world opening up - the world of TRI - offering our
challenged and high-risk youth - South African Students - a much needed
inner educational pathway supported by our SmilingOne Change Agents
and our aspiring Champions of Change. This is a space where we speak
about the things - CHALLENGES - that are rarely addressed in school. This
is a space where it is okay to express how we feel and where our
emotions are addressed in new and profound ways. Most of our youth do
not feel heard or understood. Most of our youth do not have the tools nor
the skills to deal with the challenges that they face on a daily basis at
school, at home and in their communities. Hand in hand with the students
in our active school and community projects as well as the LRMG Digital
Team we are shaping a truly remarkable digital experience. Soon to be
launched (mid 2019).

Our SmilingOne Foundation can make a significant
contribution in South Africa!
We have always known this to be true and have
showcased this through our specialised activities the
past eleven years where incredible change has been
evident in the lives we have touched. We wanted to
do more and stretch ourselves into more areas that
matter to us as SmilingOne and to us all as a nation.
Crime Diversion and Prevention, and Social Cohesion
matters! Providing our Youth, our Learners in our
Schools with an enabling platform, guidance and
support from a Change Agent and a values-based
leadership toolkit matters!
The past year has been a turning point for our
foundation in this regard as we have attracted some
truly special sponsorships allowing us this stretch. It is
amazing that we can leverage eleven years of Change
Agent work and channel a highly unique and
dynamic team into two school processes. Our team
knows what it means to take the lead on their journeys
and become conscious Community Enablers and
Change Agents. We have a team that has diverted
from a path of crime, that deeply relates to the
challenges of today’s Learners and is an example of
having leveraged change in their own lives. This was
one of the key factors in DG Murray Trust coming
onboard and granting us a sponsorship of
R245,500. Our team is now supported on the path of
inspiring youth to take charge of their lives, to
champion their change and awaken the leader within.
The individual who becomes a Change Agent is of a
very special calibre with tools and skills to inspire
change in the environments they lead in.
We have immense gratitude to our sponsors - we
can finally remunerate our amazing team in direct
alignment to their daily contributions in their projects.
We operate with an Entrepreneurial mindset and
reward focused energy which is in deep honouring of
what we want to achieve. At the same time we
understand that as we provide our service we are
constantly in a classroom for our individual, team and
organisational learning and growth. Our team is
highly disciplined in monitoring and reporting on a
monthly basis. We go back to our reports, review
where to adjust and how to steer towards the most
impactful approach. We workshop our reports as a
team monthly. We give each other critical feedback
and we listen carefully to feedback given to us - in the
school projects we receive feedback from Learners,
Teachers and Parents. We know there is more than
just one lane to drive on in project implementation.
Each project is a fantastic teacher. We listen to
where the project leads us and how it impacts the
bigger picture. The ongoing task is to integrate
around the job. We have had experience with several
projects the past elven years. We hold each other
accountable as a team! We find the right balance of
resolve and humility.
Another truly special partnership which has evolved is
our partnership with LRMG. We deeply treasure the
opportunity to co-create magic and are deeply
humbled by the many hours of work and expertise that
LRMG Digital has donated into the development of
our Champion of Change APP. We are so excited to
add this additional experience and tool to our school
processes throughout 2019. It strengthens our offering
and is a catalyst for opening more doors in regards to
further partnerships and sponsorships.
An indication of The SmilingOne Foundation’s growing
profile is our strengthened ability to raise funds,
contributing to a sound financial health this year. We
obsess about quality and that every cent allocated
in the projects has been maximised! As part of our
Diversify Funding Strategy our Change Agents make a
monthly donation as well so as to build buffers to
assist sustainability of projects and soften any period
of risk in a project (when a project is without funding).
Last but not least we celebrate our newly
established partnership with Kirsh Family
Foundation. They have granted us a three year
sponsorship starting March 2019 (new financial year).
21. GOVERNANCE
AS A BOARD we are accountable for our standard of
governance and therefore highly committed to ensure that we
deliver what we promise. It begins with how we live our
SmilingOne Dream, walking the talk and fuelling these values
into building a strong and sustainable organisation.
FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT POLICY - the SmilingOne
Foundations financial management is done in terms of the
South African Auditing Standards and audited financial
statements are available. Our external auditor HG Page
(Company Practice No 964700) provide oversight and
monitoring.
QUALITY MANAGEMENT is integrated into the SmilingOne
Foundations management system. Project monitoring and
evaluation is part of our total Quality Management Policy.
OUR CHANGE AGENT COMMITTEE is tasked with monitoring
of all our COC projects. Each project undergoes monthly
quality assurance through comprehensive COC feedback
reports from the project as well an evaluation by the Chair of
the Committee.
