3. What is Artificial Intelligence?
Intelligence
the capacity to learn and solve problems
Artificial intelligence (since 1956)
AI is the intelligence of machines and robots and the
branch of computer science that aims to create it :
the ability to solve problems
the ability to act rationally
the ability to act like humans
“The ability of a system to autonomously learn from data
and turn this knowledge into actions and / or
recommendations”
(Innoviris)
Several approaches
AI brings together sciences and technologies that make it possible to
imitate and/or to increase human intelligence using machines

no plans of investing in AI :

24. AI challenges
AI regulation (US/Europe)
Barack Obama (2016): the White House is releasing a report on future directions and
considerations for AI called “Preparing for the Future of Artificial Intelligence”
Elon Musk compares building Artificial Intelligence to “Summoning The Demon” :
It the most serious threat to the survival of the human race
Co-founder (with Sam Altman) of “Open AI” : non-profit AI research company (2015)
The organization aims to "freely collaborate" with other institutions and researchers by making its
patents and research open to the public
The company is supported by over US$1 billion in commitments
The founders are motivated in part by concerns about existential risk from artificial general intelligence
Stephen Hawking (English theoretical physicist, cosmologist) says artificial intelligence
could be humanity's greatest disaster ”The rise of powerful AI will be either the best or the
worst thing ever to happen to humanity. We do not know which”
The EU must adopt policies for the development, deployment and use of
AI in Europe (European Economic and Social Committee)
Mady Delvaux (Member of the European Parliament)
proposes rules for robots and AI in Europe (interview 2017)
26. AI challenges
Source : MCKINSEY GLOBAL INSTITUTE - FUTURE THAT WORKS:
AUTOMATION, EMPLOYMENT, AND PRODUCTIVITY JANUARY 2017
Technical potential for automation across sectors varies
depending on mix of activity types (McKinsey)
Jobs (automation)
Robotics/AI (4th industrial revolution)
About 7 million jobs will be lost and 2 million
gained as a result of technological change in
15 major developed and emerging economies
(by 2020)
(World Economic Forum 2016 - The future of Jobs)
The report of the University of Oxford/Citibank predicted that
47% of US jobs are at risk of automation (February 2016)
27. AI challenges : The 'singularity' concept
Robots may go out of control
SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son (keynote said « Super
intelligence is going to become a reality, his belief is that
computers will exceed humans in intelligence in 3
decades (2040)”
28. AI…
AI technology is changing everything from marketing to transport, finance, healthcare, IT, etc
With the evolution of the IT infrastructure (Decreasing costs of computing power), availability of
data (too much data, not enough information), new algorithm & technology approach (Open
source library for machine learning: Google TensorFlow, Python), API/interoperability (IBM
Bluemix/Watson, Salesforce Einstein, Microsoft 365), ecosystem/networking (AI community) &
training (MooC)…
AI becomes more and more a real opportunity for enterprise (SME & Large company)
The market is huge & growing GAFAM invest heavily and increasingly in AI
AI will impact jobs :
with a negative balance : 5 million jobs (-7/+2M) to be lost by 2020 in every industry
(assistant, taxi driver, accountant, translator, dermatologist, community manager, etc)
Jobs will change (more cooperation with robot)
Not (yet) regulation on AI in Europe/Belgium (self-driving vehicles, robots, etc)
