1. Radio Production
BBC radio 1
Introduction
BBC radio 1 was first broadcasted in 1967 to meet the demand for music generated by
pirate radio stations. It then started broadcasting 24 hours a day in 1991.
Programme types
1. The different types of shows on the schedule vary from news time, different genres
of music, DJ time slots and regular live lounge show and breakfast shows.
For example:
6AM – radio 1’s breakfast show with Nick Grimshaw talking about stuff but also
playing the current music that is loved by the audience.
12:45PM – newsbeat that highlights the latest news around the world
4PM – official chart with Greg James this is about 2 hours long where James counts
down the latest top hits
11PM – Danny Howard where the music continues with Pirate Copy drops offs his
weekend weapons.
4AM – radio 1;s essential mix where the worlds best DJ takes control over essential
mix desks
2. In the daytime you get breakfast shows like with Nick Grimshaw talking about things
and putting on the latest hits you also get the live lounge session in the daytime as
well as this could be entertaining for people driving off to work. In the afternoon you
get serious shows informing the audience such as the news but also entertainment.
In the prime time you get mainly shows playing the different genre’s of music such
as radio 1’s dance anthems this is because people maybe getting off to work and they
may just want to relax.
3. BBC radio 1 mainly has mainstream shows such as mainstream music as it plays the
latest hot music that the audience love. This is more likely to be on daytime and
primetime as people are getting ready for the day to begin but also when coming
home as that might be what they look forward for on a drive home.
4. BBC radio 1 record many live performances in their studio as they are no longer
allowed to provide commercial radio shows. As the commercial radio shows played
on BBC became restricted, hence why there is no advertising.
2. Genre
1. BBC radio 1 has many mainstream genres of music in a random order rather than
having specific niche genres of music. They play current music, which varies, from
hip-hop, rap, pop, rock, bass and drum etc. BBC radio’s music ranges from ABC
listings, which are based on the most popular music compared to the least yet,
popular and current still in the time.
2. BBC radio 1 is not a generic station as it includes a lot of different types of genres
ranging from hip hop, rap, pop, rock, dub step, bass and drum.
3. BBC radio 1 is both a talk based station and a music station as they include a bit of
both. They range from times e.g. in the daytime they are more likely to start of with
the breakfast show leading into the current music then this is repeated in the prime
time where you get a news broadcast but latest hits and interviews with people
maybe.
Audience profile
1. BBC radio 1’s audience is mainly based around the young scale of the spectrum
raging from 15-29 year olds even though in 2008 the number rose to an average of
33 years old tuning in as well. The demographic for the audience is both female and
male from socio- economic groupings from E-B as of the different ranges of genre’s
being played. People who listen to this target audience are mainly people within the
target audience range but also people older than the demographic that its
specifically aimed at as like I said 33 year Old’s also listen to the BBC radio 1.
2. BBC radio 1’s service license says that the station should be available every within
the UK and also offer mixed broadcast content on different Internet platforms.
Radio 1 has to entertain and engage the audience with a broad range of
contemporary music and speech. Also the radio 1 station as to paly diverse music
and expose listener to new and sometimes challenging material that they may not
otherwise experience.
Production process
1. BBC radio one was first launched on 1967 and started broadcasting 24 hours a
day in 1991. The show gets made by Chris Prices as he is in charge of the music
that goes on it and the playlist. After 7pm radio 1 gets music specialist picked by
the DJ and show team. 14 people from the shows team get together every
Tuesday and listen to the music and debate what should go on the playlist, so to
get on the playlist you have to be heard in the playlist meeting. Chris and his
team spends time listening to music in appointments with representatives from
the music industry with managers, radio promoters and sometimes artists.
Radio 1 has to provide news and Chris Smith and Tina Daheley present this.
3. Radio 1 has a budget of £34m. The stations avoid breaking copyright law as I said
before they get appointments with managers of artists, radio promoters and get
their permission. Funded by TV licence and taxpayers for both Capital and BBC
radio 1. BBC radio 1 is a non commercial station as it doesn’t advertise when
playing or in the middle of playing anything.
2. RAJAR (radio audience joint research) tells us about BBC 1’s radio audience that
average hours per listener is 6.3 implying that about 6 hours is used by an
individual listening to the radio station on average. Total hours of BBC radio in
September 2017 that an average person spent listening is 61,556 compared to
September 2016 being 62,107. This is funded by tax license and license fees.
Capital Birmingham
Introduction
Capital Birmingham first started broadcasting on 1st January 1995 as choice.fm. Then the
station was re-launched and re branded as 102.2 Capital on 3rd January 2011. The station is
owned and operated by Global Radio. Its slogan is Birmingham No1 hit music station.
Programme types
1. Capital Birmingham shows consist of catching up with the latest gossip to playing the latest
hits to breakfast shows and late shows catch up’s. These shows are very similar to Radio
1’s yet Capital plays a lot more music than Radio 1. On different parts of the day there are
different shows e.g. in the late evening (prime time) the show that is played consists of
latest hits with different genres of music that isn’t played on the early hours, whereas
during daylight hours breakfast shows are played catching the audience up to the latest pop
song with also giving the audience the latest gossip. In the afternoon where you’d see
people get off work and drive off home Sasha Brooks plays the biggest hits across
Birmingham. Capital consist of many mainstream shows showing the latest pop music
which consists of early morning to the evening then during late evening more niche genres
of music are played as a lot of the audience have gone off the radio by then so niche music
such as relaxing/rock music is played. Compared to BBC radio 1 Capital Birmingham is a
commercial station.
For example:
10PM – 1AM – The Capital late show with Marvin Humes which consists of Marvin
picking out the hottest hits and new tunes and mixes varying from the unpopular charts
such as classical, rock etc.
1AM – 4AM – Will Cozens that consist of the biggest freshest hits with talking bits
consisting of the latest celebrity gossip.
4AM – 6PM – Aimee Vivian – Aimee picks out the most biggest tunes and pays them
consistently
6AM – 10AM – Capital breakfast with Rob and Matilda – This starts off with
Birmingham waking up and listening to there biggest anthems from the Capital playlist
4. Genres
1. Capital ’s music ranges from the latest pop songs to songs that aren’t consistently played.
The radio reaches 6.5 million people every week. The schedule of Capital Birmingham
suggests that the music played are the latest and biggest tunes through every hour, but
during the Capital late show with Marvin Humes more niche genres of music are played as
the radio is not listened to as much during the late evening.
2. The music features are parts of different genres but still are very generic. The station was
primarily made to feature primarily urban contemporary black music, but it also said that it
should appeal to young white fans of urban contemporary music. As of February 2014 the
station plays 2 hours a week featuring afro-Caribbean music. The music is very similar to
what BBC radio 1 plays as they have similar artists. This station consists of the best-hit
music, the hottest showbiz and artist interviews, up-to-date news and traffic and travel
throughout the day.
Audience Profile
1. The audience that listen to Capital consists of 58% of them being between 15-34 which
make up the main target audience for the station. They consist of both genders but mainly
female from socio economic grouping ranging from E-C. The station was required to be a
rhythmic based music led service with at least 26 hours a week of identifiable specialist
music programmes such as dance, club, reggae, RnB, providing news, information and
entertainment. But due to Global Radio holdings request these requirements have been
replaces by having a rhythmic based music led service for 15-29 year olds supplemented
with news information and entertainment. The service should have particular appeal to
listeners in there 20’s and at least 12 hours a week of identifiable specialist music
programmes. The stations audience has increased and extended in the African and afro-
Caribbean communities.
Production process
1. The show is produced and broadcasts from Capital Birmingham’s studios from 6-10am
and 4-7pm on weekdays, 12-4pm on Saturdays and 12pm – 4pm on Sundays. The station
broadcasts a weekly Afro Caribbean music show on Friday mornings from 2-4am. The
local presenters are Rob Howard and Katy Poulsom; with Capital breakfast Sacha Brooks
with weekend drive time and Scott Clarke with weekend afternoons. The production
process is similar to the way Radio 1 does their show. Capital Birmingham has regular
scheduling.
