Handball,otherwise knownas“teamhandball”or“Olympichandball,” isagame that’s a mixture of
basketball,soccer,andice hockey. Handball isplayedwithtwoteamsof fourteenwithsevenplayers
takingthe court at any one time. Thisincludesone goalkeeperandsix fieldplayers. The objectof the
game is foryour teamto score more goalsthan the opposingteam. Toscore a goal,a playermustthrow

Playersmustmake a consciousefforttomove the ball upthe court and try and score. If the referee
decidesthatthe teamismakingno attemptto shoot,thisisknownas “passive play,” andthe ball is
awardedto the otherteam. The opposingteamwill tryandstopyou byblockingthe ball withthe hands
and arms,makingfrontal bodilycontact,andformingwalls withotherteammatesto force errors from
the attackingteam. A defenderhastobe careful here,astheycannot pull the ball outof the attacking
player’shands,norcan theypushor jumpintothem. Anyof these infractionsresultsinafree throw
beingawardedtothe otherteam. The game is playedintwo30-minute halvesforatotal playingtime
of 60 minutes. Highscore at the endof time wins. If the game endsina tie,up to two5-minute
overtime periodsare playedtodetermine the winner. If the game isstill tiedaftertwoovertime
periods,itgoestoa penaltyshootout,justlike soccer. Handball isaneasysportto understand,but

crease”:The goal crease,or goal area, isthe exclusive domainof the goalkeeper. All playershave tobe

to stopsomeone shooting,orhaspreventedalegitimate attackatthe score, a 7-meterthrow is
awardedto the otherteam. A playerlinesupatthe 7-meterline andgetstoshootonce againstthe
goalkeeper. All shotsthatgoin count. Dribble fault:Justlike the double-dribbleviolationinbasketball,
a playercannotdribble the ball,stop,andthenproceedtodribble again. Inhandball,thisisknownasa
dribble fault,andpossessionof the ball isawardedtothe otherteam. Progressive punishments:Just
like soccer,if youstart committingfouls,you’ll firstbe warnedwithayellow card. If youproceedto foul
again,youare handeda 2-minute suspensionfromthe game,justlike inice hockey. A thirdfoul draws
anothertwo-minute suspensionandif youfoul a fourthtime,youare showna red card and are ejected
fromthe game. You can alsobe showna straightredcard for seriousoffenses. Substitution:thereare
