A Zero-Knowledge Proof: Improving Privacy on a Blockchain

With the addition of OP_RETURN outputs in version 0.9, it became possible to attach arbitrary pieces of information to bitcoin transactions. This turns bitcoin into a low-level communications protocol, just like TCP/IP, on which many new applications can be built. Despite its powerful features, bitcoin is also limited, costly and inefficient compared to TCP/IP. After discussing which sorts of applications make this trade-off worthwhile, we talk about CoinSpark, a new open source protocol for enhancing bitcoin transactions, which makes extensive use of OP_RETURNs.

The Web is broken. HTTP is inefficient and expensive, especially for large files. Webpages are being deleted constantly, with the average lifespan of a web being 100 days. The Web's centralization limits opportunity and innovation. And it causes problems in the developing world, with natural disasters or faulty connections. We can do better. In this talk, I'll explain IPFS, a project intended to replace HTTP and build a better web. IPFS is a peer-to-peer hypermedia protocol to make the web faster, safer, and more open. In addition, IPFS will use Filecoin as a reward mechanism. Filecoin aims to provide a decentralized network for digital storage through which users can effectively rent out their spare capacity, receiving filecoins as payment. Filecoin raised 200M$ last month, breaking all records in blockchain ICOs to date.

If you need to secure an API right now, I imagine you are worrying about how, exactly, to do it. It is to my surprise that JSON Web Tokens is a topic not often talked about, and I think it deserves to be in the spotlight today. We will see how easy it is to integrate it in an API authentication mechanism. If you want simple stateless HTTP authentication to an API, then JWT is just fine and relatively quick to implement. But JWT is a simple authentication protocol, OAuth is an authentication framework, that enables a third-party application to obtain limited access to an HTTP service. OAuth is a simple way to publish and interact with protected data. It's also a safer and more secure way for people to give you access.
