8. #2 Stay Calm
We know a roof leak can be a scary, stressful
situation.
Most contractors would not be able to start a job
immediately, so be wary of a contractor who says they can
start right away.
A professional contractor will help you to solve your
immediate problem and schedule a major repair for later.

High pressure, pushy sales tactics should be
avoided.

make the right decisions.

12. #4 Shop around
Don’t pick the first contractor who shows up!
Instead, investigate your options and look into each
prospective contractor.
Find out as much as you can about each potential
contractor. Ask for references and check them out. Ask
the contractor to tell you about their most challenging job
and how they met those challenges. Are they innovative
problem solvers?

Ask potential contractors to provide credentials
(appropriate to your locale).
For example, membership in:
CRCA – Canadian Roofing Contractors Association,
or OIRCA – Ontario Industrial Roofing Contractors
Association.

16. #6 Get everything in writing
Scope of work, timelines, price, etc., should all be
in writing.
Require and obtain a written contract showing the
contractor’s name, address, business license number,
phone number, email and website.
Ask for proof of current WSIB coverage.

18. #7 Good communication
When evaluating a potential contractor, look for
good communication skills.
Good communication skills will make things far easier.
Find a contractor you are comfortable communicating
with and who will help you understand the process (every
step of the way).
This should be a critical element of your selection process.

20. #8 Written guarantee
Do not work with a contractor unless they offer a
written guarantee on both materials and labour.
We can’t stress this enough!
Absolutely do not entertain working with a contractor if
you don’t obtain a formal, written, signed guarantee
covering both materials and labour.

Find out if the contractor you are considering trains their
staff regularly and frequently on safety, plus product and
materials knowledge.

24. #10 Length of time in
business
The longer they’ve been around, the more
experience they will possess.
As well, an established roofing contractor will be there
when you need them and will be able to honour their
warrantees.
