Last but not the least, I would like to thank God for without Him this wouldn’t have been possible.
3. SUMMARY
I was always a fan of computers and technology but I had very less knowledge in the practical aspects.
However, that changed after my internship here in AFNIC Fujairah, U.A.E. It was a great opportunity for
me to undergo a 1 month internship and it was indeed a real experience. The internship was
concentrated on IT Networking and Hardware. At the beginning of the internship I had several learning
goals regarding the improvement of knowledge and skills in a corporate company, the IT infrastructure,
Networking and Hardware and the different problems faced in the IT field and how to tackle them.
Al Fujairah National Insurance Company, as the name suggests, is an insurance company and I was lucky
enough to be a part of the IT team. An over three decade old Insurer, Al Fujairah National Insurance Co
(AFNIC) is the only Insurer with Headquarters in Fujairah, situated at the East-end of the UAE, serving a
multitude of wide-spectrum clientele throughout the UAE.
During my internship, my main job was to deal with different complaints given by the staff regarding
their computers and deal with them. Maintenance was my main work and also fixing and clearing the
doubts of each staff in this company.
There were times when network/servers/computers went down where we had to go and fix it across all
the branches across U.A.E. as we were the main branch and we controlled the IT aspect of all branches.
By the end of the internship, we had set up the computers, network, servers and CCTV recording
device(s) in the new branch situated in Al Hail, Fujairah, U.A.E. which deals with accidental claims.
In conclusion, the internship was a useful experience. I have found out what my strengths and
weaknesses are; I have gained new knowledge and skills and had met many new people. I had achieved
many of my learning goals.
I got an insight in working in a corporate office, where the prime goal is to get things done in the
quickest way possible. I learned more about computers, their infrastructure and how it changes from
company to company, the different problems faced in the IT world, their security, threats, prevention,
and maintenance and so on.
In the end, this internship has given me new insights and the motivation to pursue a career in computer
science engineering. It has helped me a lot for my future career. I have worked on my communication
skills such that now I am able to present and express myself more confidently.

2.2 Internship Activities
As you can see this is an insurance company and it begs the question how working here can help in my
field, Computer Science. I was working in the IT department of the company where we solve technical
problems or doubts sent by the staff members of the company and help in the maintenance of the
server, networks, computers etc. My work completely dealt with the IT infrastructure of the company,
its maintenance, installation, troubleshooting, etc. Office hours start from (U.A.E. Time) 8:00am to
6:00pm with a 2 hour break at 1:00pm.
Most of my work included fixing problems or doubts sent to us by the staff members which we would
solve by either connecting to the computer remotely, communicating through the phone or in some
situations going there personally and fixing the problem. The other works would be installing new PCs
every day, installing their OS, setting up the computer domain and IP address, installing additional
software used by the company, setting up restrictions, etc.
On the very first day of my internship I came across a malware known as RansomWare, which I felt was
very interesting. This malware was found in a computer and it was immediately removed from the
network when it was detected. What made this malware interesting is the idea and working behind the
malware. As the name itself suggests, it asks for a ransom amount to clear the malware. What the
7. malware does is that, when it attacks a computer, the malware encrypts every file with an RSA
cryptosystem encryption so that the user can’t access any file on his computer. The encrypted file is type
is changed to ‘.vvv’ so that later when it needs to be decrypted the files can be accessed easily. Just like
how a real kidnapping works, the files are encrypted and in every directory there exists an HTML
document which says “You have been attacked, all your files are encrypted. To get these file back send
<ransom amount> as bitcoin using Torr browser to <the url address>”. An ingenious idea, but not for the
company, as the company had a huge loss and gladly the malware didn’t reach the server. We had tried
to work it out but no results came out so we were forced to format it and install a new PC.
As the days passed the work increased and every day I learned something new.
One day, the network in the ground floor (Claims Department) was not available nor were the IP
phones. On troubleshooting, we found out that the switch, which connects all the computers, had
stopped working. I and Mr. Jaim Jones, temporarily fixed an old CISCO Switch which did not have PoE
(Power over Ethernet) and we had to switch the wires and it took a long time until the network came
back and the work continued.
The company had started a new system where they use document scanners to scan documents and
store it in the server. I was in charge of installing the document scanners at each department and for
installing the software in each PC. It was indeed a tedious job and the software needed constant
maintenance as there were several bugs found over time.
I was taken inside the server room where I learned about the servers, how it is installed and maintained.
I learned about each component I found in the server room: the hard disks, routers, switches for both
the IP phones and PCs, the SONIC WALL Firewall, etc. I learned about RAID and which RAID is used for
different purposes. Even though I learned about RAID in CAO, learning about it here gave me a clear idea
what it is all about and when/how to use it in different situations.
I learned about the network infrastructure of the company and VPN (Virtual Private Network) used to
connect the different branches of the company and its EasyInsuranceATM installed in different parts of
U.A.E. They explained the network using the company’s network schematic diagram. The network was
complex but it made sure everything was connected.
Mr. Abdul Mujeeb taught me about Database Management Systems using Oracle. He showed me the
company’s database structure, and how much data the company is dealing with every day.
Mr. Ashok Padmanabhan and Mr. Ashraf Awad taught me a great deal about where we stand today in
the IT field and they shared their experiences and hardships to get where they are now. The most
amazing thing I saw was the bond they both shared, constantly learning and sharing with each other
what they learned, a great partnership indeed.
I learned crimping an RJ45 Ethernet cable and using a network cable tester.
The most proud job that Mr. Ashok gave me was to setup the computers and network in a newly
created room (Medical Claims) for 5 employers. He gave me full responsibility and I did my job well and
the 5 staff members were pleased with the work. I installed 5 PCs in the room, asked the electricians to
setup up power outlets under every table to connect the PCs, a switch to connect every PC by Ethernet,
a network card printer and a network printer.
8. The company was setting up a new branch in Al Hail, Fujairah and I was taken to show the new office
and how the computers, servers and network was set. I learned how to install the CCTV Security Footage
Recorder which was kept inside the server room.
3 REFLECTION
In this chapter I reflect on the internship. Regarding my learning goals I shortly discuss my experiences: if
I have achieved my goal, whether I experienced difficulties and what I think I have to improve.
The functioning and working conditions of a corporate company
At the beginning I did not have any experience of working within a corporate office. Although I have
seen one, I understood its functioning, the organization structure and so on. Trying to operate as a
corporate office, I saw the importance of speed, results and personal capacity. During my internship I
also experienced the dependence of the company on the IT Infrastructure. The corporate world is
dependent on us, as every second, megabytes of memory are read and written and we have to make
sure that this stream flows all the time without any interruption.
Enhancing communication skills
My communication skills did improve; now I am able to talk with people and deal with different
individuals and to keep my cool no matter what.
The use of skills and knowledge gained in the university
The knowledge that I obtained from my university was theoretical, I had a lot of trouble putting that
into practice as it isn’t the same. But surprisingly, the theoretical came out to be clearer when I
learned its practicality.
The experience in working in another country/with persons from another culture
The internship was an opportunity to get immersed on a deeper level in another culture. It was really
experiencing to see how other people live. It also helped to look at things from a different
perspective. Beside language, I did not experience difficulties caused by different cultural
backgrounds. An interesting and open attitude of the people has helped. I hardly experienced
problems and I got used quickly to the different ways of living.
The influence in career plans
Before starting this internship I never had clear path on what sector of IT should I work on. I was
interested in all of them but I had no idea how each sector works. Now I have something and I am
able to compare it to make up a decision in the future.
4 CONCLUSION
On the whole, this internship was a useful experience. I have gained new knowledge, skills and met
many new people. I achieved all of my learning goals and it showed a more clear path to my main
goal, my career. I got an insight into professional practice and the corporate world.
The internship was also beneficial in finding out what my strengths and weaknesses are. This helped
me to define what skills and knowledge I have to improve in the coming time.
The most important of all was the correction to my assumption that theoretical knowledge is enough
to get through anything, I was definitely wrong on that one. It might help me get through
9. exams/interviews but when it comes to the real world, experience, practical knowledge, speed and
dealing with people are the real skill sets we need to move ahead.
As each day passed by my knowledge increased, my ideas developed, my path cleared and of course,
more experienced. Truly, it was a great experience indeed, full of knowledge and at the same time
fun.
This internship has given me new insights and motivation to pursue a career in computer science
engineering.
