Summer internship application season begins in fall of the year prior!
● Many companies get budget for internships early and start posting opportunities in the Fall.
● Other companies wait until January to begin posting opportunities.
● Internships are typically filled by April for a May/June start.

● Mass Application/ Summer Programs - VC firms - hackNY fellows, Andreesen Horowitz, First Round
Capital, True Ventures, Kleiner Perkins Fellows, Bane's StartUp Academy, NYC Turing Fellows,
InterviewStreet and InternMatch
● Look beyond your campus offerings. Competition is less in the general populace.
● Apply Directly - find companies and go to their career page
● Focus on Tech Hubs - Bay Area, NY/Brooklyn, Boston, Austin/Dallas, LA, Philly

How?
It’s not WHAT you know, it’s WHO you know.
● Build an Online Resume and Portfolio + Build a LinkedIN Profile
● Referrals are key - upperclassmen, TA’s, employees, investors
● LinkedIN - find the recruiter, find the hiring manager, guess the email address, get in front of them
● Attend Conferences & Meetups - network!
● Volunteer - prior experience is important
● Build a clear resume and cover letter - no, it doesn’t have to be 1 page!
● Go directly to company page to apply

Preparing for the Internship
● Learn about the company - read their investor goals, learn about their organization, learn about their
founder, pre-interview other employees
● Sign up for their service (i.e. Dropbox, Snapchat, etc.) and come up with ideas to make their service
better
● Follow them on Social Media
● Practice for a Technical Interview - write code on a whiteboard, have someone do a mock interview
with you, read Gayle McDowell’s “Cracking the Coding Interview”
● Train by interviewing at companies you’re not as excited about
