2. Se emplean para especular acerca de lo
que podría ocurrir, lo que puede haber
ocurrido y lo que desearíamos que
ocurriese
Condicionales
Se utilizan para hablar sobre situaciones
reales o irreales. En general, las frases
condicionales llevan la palabra “if” (si).
• Zero Conditional
• First Conditional
• Second Conditional
• Third Conditional
• Mix Conditional
3. Zero Conditional
ESTRUCTURA
If + Simple present = Simple present
Ejemplos:
If I run, I get tired
If public transport is efficient, people stop
using their cars.
tipo de condicional, podemos sustituir “if” por “when”
sin alterar el significado.
Does your mom get mad if you don’t call her?
I play the piano poorly if I don’t practice everyday
If you mix red and blue, you get purple.
When it rains, the grass gets wet.
Ice melts when you heat it.
4. También se utiliza para
dar instrucciones y, en
este caso, el verbo de la
cláusula principal va en
imperativo.
• If Bill phones, tell him to meet me at the
cinema.
• Ask Pete if you're not sure what to do.
• If you want to come, call me before 5:00.
• Meet me here if we get separated.
First Conditional
Se refiere a una condición posible
y su resultado probable
ESTRUCTURA
If + Simple present = Simple future
(will)
Ejemplos:
Simple present Simple future
If you don't hurry, you will miss the train.
If you come for the weekend, we will go to the cinema
If you park here, you will get a fine
Will you take the train if you miss the bus?
5. Nota: Se pueden usar algunos
verbos modales en vez de
“will” para cambiar la
probabilidad o expresar una
opinión.
• If it doesn’t rain, we may go to the beach
• If he calls you, you should go.
• If you buy my school supplies for me, I will be able to go to the park
• If you drop that glass, it might break.
Second Conditional
probable.
ESTRUCTURA
If + Simple past = “would” + infinitive
Ejemplos:
If I won the lottery, I would travel around the world.
If she fell, she would hurt herself.
Would you be happy if you were to get married?
If I were you, I would give up smoking.
We might buy a larger house if we had more money
6. Third Conditional
ESTRUCTURA
If + Past perfect = “would have” + past
participle
Se refiere a una condición imposible,
situada temporalmente en el pasado, y a
su resultado probable en el pasado. Estas
oraciones son ciertamente hipotéticas e
irreales porque, en este momento, es
demasiado tarde para que la condición o
su resultado se produzcan. Casi siempre
implica cierto arrepentimiento
Ejemplos:
If I had worked harder I would have passed the exam
I would have been happy if you had called me on my
birthday
If I had known then what I know now, I would have done
things differently
If I'd known you were in hospital, I'd have visited you.
1. "would" nunca aparece en la proposición "if", por tanto, si "-
'd" aparece en la proposición "if", será la contracción de "had".
2. "had" nunca se pone antes de "have", por tanto, si "-'d"
aparece tras un pronombre y va seguido de "have", será la
contracción de "would".
Contracciones
7. aMix Conditional
Se refiere a una condición irreal
situada en el pasado y a su
probable resultado en el
presente. Expresan una situación
que es contraria a la realidad
tanto en el pasado como en el
momento actual.
ESTRUCTURA
If + Past perfect = present conditional
If I had worked harder at school, I would have better job
now.
I would have a better job now if I had worked harder at
school.
If we had looked at the map we wouldn't be lost.
Ejemplos:
If you had crashed the car, you might be in trouble
If + Past perfect = perfect conditional
If I wasn't afraid of spiders, I would have picked it up.
If I was a good cook, I'd have invited them to lunch.
I would have been happy to help you if I wasn't in the
middle of another meeting.
