The fishbone diagram, or the cause and effect diagram, is a
simple graphic display that shows all the possible causes of a
problem in a business process.
It is also called the Ishakawa diagram.

1943 1960 1990
The fishbone, or cause &
effect diagram, was first
used by Dr. Kaoru Ishikawa,
a pioneer of quality
management, of the
University of Tokyo in 1943.
Fishbone diagram was
devised by professor
Kaoru Ishikawa in the
1960s.
The technique was then
published in Kaoru
Ishikawa's 1990 book,
"Introduction to Quality
Control."
