Virtual keyboard
1.
2. A Virtual Keyboard is a form of computer input
device whereby the image of a keyboard is
projected onto a surface.
When a user touches the surface covered by an
image of a key, the device records the
corresponding keystroke.
3. An optical virtual keyboard
was invented and patented
by IBM Engineers in 1992.
It optically detects & analyses
finger motions and interprets them.
In 2002,CANESTA developed a virtual
keyboard using their proprietary "electronic
perception technology". The company
subsequently licensed the technology to
Celluon of Korea.
VIRTUAL KEYBOARD
4. It takes up less desk space than a
conventional keyboard.
Can be used with Smart phones, PDAs,
Laptop, Palmtop.
When connected to your handheld computer
it is more convenient to carry around than
your laptop.
5. This System Comprises Of 3 Components
Sensor
Pattern Projector
IR Light
6. The working of virtual keyboard can be
explained in 3 modules.
Projection Module
Micro-Illumination Module
Sensor Module
7.
8. A template is created of the desired interface
and is projected onto the adjacent interface
surface .
This template is produced by illuminating a
specially designed highly efficient
holographic optical element with a red diode
laser
9. An infra-red plane of light is generated just
above, and parallel to the interface surface.
This light is invisible to the user and hovers a
few millimeters above the surface.
When the user's finger makes a keystroke on
the virtual keyboard, it breaks the infrared
beam and reflects light back to the projector.
10. Reflected light from user interactions with the
interface surface is passed through an infra-
red filter and imaged onto a CMOS image
sensor in the sensor module.
Simply, sensor in the projector picks up
finger movements of the user
11. Virtual keyboards can be connected to the
computer either through Bluetooth or USB.
Bluetooth technology also enables the virtual
keyboard for point to multi-point connectivity
with other Bluetooth devices, such as
PCs, PDAs and Mobile Phones.
12. Portability
Accuracy
Speed of text entry
Flexibility
Keyboard layouts can be changed by
software
Compatibility
Occupies Less Space
13. It is very costly ranging from 150$ to 200$.
Requires little practice.
The room in which the projected keyboard is
used should not be very bright so that the
keyboard is properly visible.
Relatively poor Battery Life.
The keyboard utility depends entirely on the
surface on which it is located.
14. High-Tech and Industrial Sectors.
Used with PDAs, Smart Phones, Laptop,
Word Processing and Spreadsheets
As Computer/PDA input
Gaming Control
15. In the near future all the input devices will be
changed from conventional to virtual devices.
It can be also used in 6th Sense Technology
Device and even with 3D Glasses.
