3. PURPOSE
A Form 2290 and Schedule 1 must be filed
for the tax period beginning July 1, 2012,
and ending on June 30, 2013, if a taxable
highway motor vehicle (defined below) is

4. SCHEDULE 1
• Tax payer must file schedule 1 along with form 2290 to
the IRS. IRS will return the schedule 1 with IRS
Electronic watermark with a timestamp.
• To report all vehicles for which you are reporting tax
(including an increase in taxable gross weight) and those
that you are reporting suspension of the tax by category
and vehicle identification number (VIN).
• Proof of payment for state registration. Generally, states
will require verification of payment of the tax for any
taxable vehicle before they will register the vehicle.
• Use the stamped copy of Schedule 1 as proof of
payment when:
Registering vehicles with the state, or
Entering a Canadian or Mexican vehicle into the United
states

• Form 2290 must be filed for each month a
taxable vehicle is first used on public
highways during the current tax period.
• Form 2290 must be filed by the last day of
the month following the month of first use.
• The filing rules apply both for paying the tax
or reporting suspension of the tax.

13. HOW TO PAY THE TAXES TO IRS
E-Filing 2290 allows the filer to send the payments by any
one of the following ways:
Direct Debit (Electronic Funds Withdrawal)
Bank account number and routing number must be
entered and IRS will initiate the withdrawal
EFTPS
The filers can send the money using EFTPS.Gov site.
They just need to indicate that they have chosen EFTPS
