Ultimate frisbee was born at Columbia High School
in Maplewood, New Jersey. Creator Joel Silver
pitched his idea for the new sport in 1968, and
intra-school games began the following year.
3. By 1970, ultimate frisbee had an official set of
rules. Two years later, it hit collegiate fields.
Rutgers and Princeton played the first official
college game on November 6, 1972, resulting in a
narrow victory for Rutgers.
The first World Ultimate Championship was held in
1983 in Gothenburg, Sweden. Teams from the
United States largely dominated this inaugural
competition. Since then, the sport has become
popular around the world. It is now part of the
World Games and has more than 100,000 players
across 50 nations.
