This coming Monday, August 21, 2017, a total solar eclipse will occur, visible in totality
only within a band across the entire contiguous United States. In parts of Missouri, people
will be able to see a total solar eclipse, an event not occurring since 1442 (and the next isn’t
expected to take place until the year 2505! For best viewing, head south and west. Within 270,
you can head to Jefferson Barracks or Clydesdale parks; if you can go farther, then Lone Elk Park,
Castlewood or Greensfelder parks are good. As close as you can get to St. Clair (SW) or Festus (S)
will be all the better for the amount of time you get to see the eclipse. Best viewing times will begin in St. Clair at
1:16 pm (total 2 mins./40 secs). Downtown St. Louis, the Arch, Busch Stadium and Lambert Airport are NOT in
the path! NASA stresses that eclipse watchers wear glasses from an approved manufacturer and have an ISO
icon with reference 12312-2. Note: Check out www.explorestlouis.com to learn of more 2017 eclipse festivals in
the St. Louis area and beyond.
