4. RESEARCH & IDEA
GENERATION
Select a song/track that you like [or don’t like!]
Generate three ideas for music videos employing styles,
techniques and conventions that we have looked at in
previous sessions. Explore how you could interpret the
song differently using different methods
You can add any extra info you think is relevant, images,
mind maps, etc
For quick mind maps you could use bubbl.us to generate
these
5. RESEARCH
Watch a selection of videos to get your ideas started,
make note of a minimum of 5 – add extra slides,
screenshot the video and in bullet point note down info
in terms of camera, editing, art design, performance, etc
and how this might link to your production
Hint!
You’ve already done this in
your case study, so you can
summarise that here where
relevant
6. VAMPIRE WEEKEND 'A PUNK'
In the video the camera is in one place on a tripod with the band Infront playing
their song. In the video there is a simulated performance from the band to the
audience. This helps to make the video more personal and can help the
audience to feel like they are listening to the band live. The band are moving
and performing in an over cranking style. This style of editing is effective as it
gives the audience more to look at and makes the band unique. This style of
editing is achieved by slowing the track down and then getting the band to play
the instruments, dance and sing to the speed of the slowed down version of the
song. After this has been done the video and sound is matched up and sped
back up to the normal speed of the song in post-production. This then achieves
7. STORMZY 'VOSSI BOP'
In the video a low angled camera shot with the main artist in the center looking
down is the first thing the audience see. This is impactive for the audience as it
shows that the artist is superior and that they have power. This immediately
makes the audience listen and think about the artists views and opinions
making him a very influential artist. The transitions from shots are seamless
and well executed. They make the video look good and feel smooth by planning
the cuts and the starts together. The video also shows lots of groups of people
dancing and performing as a unit. This would show a sense of family or
community and target different groups of people. I would think about including
8. HOT CHIP 'I FEEL BETTER'
In the music video Hot Chip are represented as a typical
collective boy band who focus on how they look and what
the audience think of them. The camera work is very fast
and lots of shots to match the setting of the concert. There
is lots of bursts of light and different lighting effects that
take place on the stage and in the crowd. I would possibly
use features like this in my music video as it can have a
good effect on the audience and can add another layer to
9. IDLES 'MERCEDES MARXISTS'
In the music video the artists are trying to put the literal metaphor of banging
your head against a wall into perspective. They do this by showing segments of
a working-class man's day. The man is constently smashing his head
throughout the day. This shows that he is trapped and can't get out. Towards
the end of the song the character passes out and has visions of him running
towards a white light which could connotate that he is being released from the
life he hates. In the scene he is also pushing and fighting characters of himself
that are trying to stop him. This could show that he is battling with himself and
fighting with himself to get out. There is lots of strobe and black and white
effects used. This helps to reinforce the conventions of, 'going towards the
light' and what the character is going through. At the end, two men snap him
out of it and he wakes up and continues to bang his head showing that he is
10. APHEX TWIN 'COME TO
DADDY'
In the music video there is lots of television static throughout the video. This
could make the audience doubt themselves as to whether the things going on in
the video are real or if they are just from a television screen. The television static
is also glitched and distorted. This effect helps to give the audience connotations
that something is out of the ordinary and that something supernatural could be
terrorising characters in the music video. There are also lots of low angled shots
and close ups. This can give the effect that the audience are powerless and that
the supernatural villains in the video have power and authority. The close ups
used can help to force perspectives on the audience. This helps to make the
audience feel uncomfortable and scared. This has been done to show the
11. POTENTIAL SONG
Riptide-Vance Joy
I have picked this as one of my potential songs as I feel
like I could be very creative with my camera work to
match the lyrics and the theme of the song. I could do
this by having a person escaping from a bad lifestyle and
going on this journey to get away from civilization and
get away to the coast. I would also get some arial shots
of places that link to the song and the lyrics. For
example I would use a beach as my main location along
with cliffs and a home. These locations keep the theme
of the song and keeps the iconic paralleled imagery. I
would also use some effects like the strobe effect I found
researching 'Mercedes Marxists' by Idles.
12. POTENTIAL TECHNIQUES
Some potential techniques that I could use,
include effects like the strobe effect I found
researching 'Mercedes Marxists' by Idles. This effect
would work in certain parts of the song to match the
beat or break up the song in parts. I will also cut shots to
the beat of the song as it gives a smoother transition
between shots and an overall smoother and more natural
video. I also want to use seamless and perfect shot
transitions I found researching Stormzy's music video,
Vossi Bop. This will make the video look very
professional and give the audience the idea that all the
shots are linked in some way combining the music video
as one and telling a real story.
13. CONVENTIONS YOU PLAN TO
USE
In my music video I plan to use technical and symbolic
codes and conventions that relate to the song and can
produce a strong narrative for the audience. For example
I will use lots of mise-en-scene conventions to match the
narrative and the song. for instence I will use locations
like the beach, and I will use costumes that can develop
more on the narrative like old winter and worn clothes. I
will also use technical conventions such as the camera
angles and shots. Lower angles and tracking shots would
work well for this as it shows a sense of authority and
power over a character and that they are always being
watched or followed. These conventions help the
audience become familiar with the genre as the
conventions make them specific to the genre. It will also
provide a strong structure that the audience can follow
easily yo understand the meaning more.
15. SUMMARY
5 opportunities of your ideas:
My opportunity to get my message and vision across to my target
audience.
An opportunity to work with different people from different
backgrounds and roles.
Opportunity to use different equipment like cameras and lighting.
Opportunity to use different editing softwares and effects.
Opportunity to work with different partnerships and agenceys.
16. SUMMARY
5 restrictions to your ideas
Location: I will have to travel to film in the locations that I
want. This could be a problem as I would have to find
transport. I could overcome this restriction by planning and
getting transport sorted early.
Cast: Casting could be restricted by the recent pandemic.
This would affect my casting as I cannot mix with other
households or be with more than 6 people socially
distanced. I can get around this by social distancing with less
than 6 members of cast. I could also cast family members.
Weather: The weather could be a problem as I don’t want it
to be raining. I can get around this by planning when I am
shooting with the weather forecast.
Cost: It will cost me to travel and to possibly film in certain
locations. I could resolve this by choosing public locations
where I won't have to pay to get in or film and by traveling
cheap and planning early.
Public filming: Shooting in public places could be an issue
because I do not want people walking in shot or getting in
the way of filming. I could reslove this by shooting outside of
17. FINAL IDEA –
ARTIST/TITLE/INFO
Riptide / Vance Joy
James Gabriel Keogh (born 1 December 1987), better
known by his stage name Vance Joy, is an Australian
singer and songwriter. He signed a five-album deal with
Atlantic Records in 2013. He released his debut EP God
Loves You When You're Dancing in March 2013.
The lumineers, Mumford and Sons, George Ezra, Hollow
Coves
Indie pop is a music genre and subculture that combines
guitar pop with DIY ethic in opposition to the style and
tone of mainstream pop music. It originated from British
post-punk in the late 1970s and subsequently generated
a thriving fanzine, label, and club and gig circuit.
18. FINAL IDEA – TRACK
SUMMARY
Summary/analysis of track [consider meaning, content,
duration, pace and style of the song]
The song was written by Vance Joy, who also produced it
with drummer Edwin White. The upbeat Indie Pop/ Folk
song has been lyrically described as a "coming of age
love story" and is known for its metaphors and pop
culture references. The song lasts 3 minutes and 24
seconds and is a relaxed, slow paced, meaningful
song.
19. FINAL IDEA – YOUR IDEA
Your creative concept/video synopsis [describe your
interpretation, use of imagery or narrative, genre
conventions, etc]
In summary, my music video is about escaping and getting
away from a trapped reality. I will make this idea into a video
by using a middle-aged male that is stuck in a trapped
painful everyday life. The video will concist of the character
traveling to the coast in order to escape. It will be a narrative
based video in an Indie Pop/ Folk genre. I will be using both
technical and symbolic conventions. For example I will use
lots of different types of camerawork like different angles
and shots. I will use lots of establishing shots of the beach
and the sea with a longshot from a height and by using a
drone. This would expand my use of camera work and keep
the audience members entertained. The use of facial
expressions will be important as well because there is no
script or speech therefore meaning the actors will have to
show their feelings and expressions through thier facial
expressions. Locations will also have a positive impact on my
21. GUIDANCE:
PRE-PRODUCTION
ASSESSMENT
You need to assess the viability of your production and
investigate what is required to enable you to make your
music video
Much of this task is hypothetical, which means you will
need to investigate standard costings for such a
production and apply these to your planned production
considering which equipment you would need and
resources, etc
Resources to support this are in the Pre-production
assessment folder on Blackboard
Delete the questions on each slide and insert your
responses
22. LOCATIONS
I will be using 6 locations. These locations are the beach/
sea, A house, shops, country roads and streets. The
location with the most limitations will be the Beach. This
is because it will cost me to travel to this location and it
could cost me to film in this location as it is a public
place. Some of the risks involve being near the sea and
being near cliffs and rocks. I will get around this by
constant planning and focus. The weather can also be a
limitation because if the weather is not right for filming or
it isn't safe to, I will have to change the days I film and
could be unable to get everything that I want to shoot. I
will resolve this by planning a day to film and planning
back up days in case the weather changes. The country
roads and streets are easier to access and easier to shoot
at as they are more local. I would have to consider some
safety aspects such as cars and other vehicles that could
drive past. I will take extra care to plan exactly where I am
filming so that I am ready on the day and that no
problems can occur.
23. EQUIPMENT
I will be using a Canon EOS M50 camera, a DJI Mavic Mini
drone and an LED light attachment, which I will have to
hire from college. I will book the LED light from college in
plenty of time so that I have it in good time and I can test
it out. I will make sure that I charge the batteries for my
camera and my drone, so that they are ready for filming,
and I will bring spares with me to film.
24. FACILITIES
I will edit my video on Premiere Pro which I have access to
on my laptop through the creative cloud. I will not need
any other specialist facilities.
25. PERSONNEL
CREW: I will need a team of 1 for the crew. I will be the
main crew member. The strengths of this is that I can
focus on how I want to do it and not worry about anyone
else and I know that my camerawork will be as I want it.
Some weaknesses would be how I could direct as well as
shooting complex scenes. I am available whenever
shooting is scheduled.
CAST: I will need one main cast member and three other
secondary cast members. They are all available at least
three days in the week so I will be able to shoot with
them in time. There will be no cost implications as they
are all volunteering. I will buy them food throughout the
day. I will transport them to the locations by car or by
walking.
26. PROPS/COSTUME/ETC
I will need plenty of props and costumes. The costumes
for the main character will be, dark old worn-down
clothes. This will consist of old washed out jeans with an
old scruffy top, gloves, a scarf and a big fleece jacket.
This costume will help the audience to recognise the
character more and to see that he does not care much
about his appearance or his look. I will need some props
like an old picture, mugs and cups, an old phone and a
wallet.
28. PRE-PRODUCTION: VISUAL
PLANNING
This section is concerned with the visual planning of your
music video
You should use this section to develop the sequencing or
your video, establish the relationship between the visuals
and the track itself and create a structure for you to
follow when filming
It is important that you ‘pre-visualise’ the video before
you make it; it will make filming and production a more
streamlined process
The following tasks are part of your visual planning
Pre-visualisation and concept boards
Storyboarding
Shot list
29. PRE-
VISUALISATION/CONCEPT
BOARDS
Tool for exploring the direction and visuals
Provides inspiration and information for the “look & feel”
Presents key moments in your video
A means to sketch/plan ideas
Information on colour/lighting
Defining the “mise-en-scene”
Include as much here as you like, but keep it relevant to the
production, the following slides have been left blank for you
to approach in your own way, add more as you need to
Extension suggestion: edit a short sequence of clips that
have inspired or influenced your video [similar to this:

31. MOOD BOARD ANALYSIS
My mood board consists of lots of images including
beaches with cliffs and the sea, men in darkness looking
stressed, old personal items and lots of countryside
travelling and country roads. This mood board represents
styles and features of my music video. The mood board
gives me a better visual idea about what my product
could look like with all the different settings, features and
overall ideas. Locations like the beach look visually good
and pleasing to the viewer but can tie to escapism and
getting to the edge of the country away from the stress of
everyday life. The old personal items like wallets and
pictures can symbolise another life or another older
generation. The images are set in Autumn/ Winter. This
could connotate the thoughts and feelings of the
character and can convey the emotions to the audience.
32. RIP-O-MATIC
You should also construct a 15-20second Rip-o-matic
test reel using existing footage to convey the type of
video you want to make
33. STRUCTURAL BREAKDOWN
Breakdown your track into it basic sections [e.g. intro,
verse, chorus, verse, etc] and apply broad visual ideas to
each section
You can use this as the master template for your
production, then add more shots to each section when
you develop your full visual plan
You should create a slide showing all the sections of the
song, then add a slide for each section with timings,
lyrics, what happens and details on specific shots
You could storyboard and shot list each section as you
go, to break up the process.
34. STRUCTURAL BREAKDOWN
Introduction:
In the introduction I will use establishing shots of the
locations in the video. The introduction will be 10
seconds long whilst the beginning ukulele is playing.
35. STRUCTURAL BREAKDOWN
Verse 1:
The first verse starts when the artists begins singing. In
this verse I will introduce my character and show him
getting up and leaving. This will be shot in his house
initially and then the streets outside his house. I will be
using lots of close up shots to clearly show the
characters emotions to the audience. I will also use mid
shots as well to help to introduce the character to the
audience. For example what he wears, what his body
language is like and what it can convey to the
audience.
36. STRUCTURAL BREAKDOWN
Chorus:
In the chorus the character will start his journey. He is
angry and determined to get away and escape the cruel
urban lifestyle. I will have fast cutting shots to the beat
of the song. This can make the video feel more fast
paced and frantic and can show the characters
desperation. The cutting of shots can also match to the
audience's heartbeat making the adrenaline go up on
fast cutting parts or down on slower cutting parts. I will
also use lots of tracking and movement shots to again
pick up the pace of the video and convey the characters
emotions. I will use some establishing shots of the
location as well to keep the focus and motive.
37. STRUCTURAL BREAKDOWN
Verse 2:
In the second verse of the song the main character will
be going to shops and cafes and asking for directions
from various people. The pace of the song has slowed
down so I will be using longer shots with less frequent
cuts. I will use multiple tracking shots in different
locations to show that the character is travelling all the
time and has travelled a long way.
38. STRUCTURAL BREAKDOWN
Chorus: In the chorus I will use establishing shots of the
sea and fast cutting shots of the destination to keep
linking the audience back to the motive and the reason
for the music video. I will also use tracking shots and
some POV shots to help the audience to feel what the
character feels.
39. STRUCTURAL BREAKDOWN
Bridge:
The bridge will include lots of fast cutting shots to build
up the pace and adrenaline. It will also have a strobe
effect and lots of flashbacks. This is to help show the
characters breakdown and show the audience his
troubles. I will include fast cutting flashbacks as well to
develop the character more. I will use close ups to show
the characters emotions clearly to the audience and to
build the pace and tension of the video as well.
40. STRUCTURAL BREAKDOWN
Chorus:
In the final chorus the character will be
getting closer to escaping and I will use fast
flashing shots to the location and to
tracking the character. It will be very fast
paced to build up the tension for the end of
the video. Towards the end the shots will
get longer and clearer to show where the
character is. The camera will end on a long
shot of the main character finally relaxed
and happy again.
