2 Annual Report 2016-17
2016-17 has been a very momentous year for
me. As I pass on the mantle of the Chairmanship
of the Western region to my successor, and
friend, I have immense pride and satisfaction
for having been able to play a role in improving
CII’s engagement, connect and relevance in the
region. This was possible only because of the
unstinted support and continuous co-operation
provided by each and every member of CII. We
have been able to play a lead role in assisting the
transformational journey of India.
During my years with CII, I have seen this
organisation evolve to a national institution for
development, working beyond the immediate
business interests of the industry.
As an institution for development and nation
building, CII is geared to strengthen its leadership
role in the firmament of industry. Recognising the
need to support ‘Make in India’ and to transform
the country into a global manufacturing hub,
CII adopted the theme - Building National
Competitiveness at the national level. The
theme emphasises on 6 key areas - Human
Development, Corporate Integrity & Good
Citizenship, Ease of Doing Business, Innovation
& Technical Capability, Sustainability and
Global Integration. These areas which form the
enablers for building National Competitiveness
are further aligned with initiatives focusing on
– Start-ups, Water Resources, Stand-up India,
Manufacturing, Make in India, Digital India and
Smart Cities.
CII Western Region, in alignment, adopted the
theme of Building Competitiveness: Deliberate
Detail; Deliver Delight to understand, define and
strategise engagement with key stakeholders
like government, member companies, industry
at large, society, NGOs and media. To fulfil the
Chairman’s Message
agenda set by the theme, CII charted, designed
and implemented its action plans through Sub-
committees, Taskforces, Councils and Working
groups. CII also focussed on policy advocacy an
important area of intervention. Not only did we
take up issues faced by the industry and resolved
them to their satisfaction, we also contributed to
the formulation of several progressive policies
for Western states. These include the Start-
up Policy, Logistics & warehousing policy in
Maharashtra; IT Policy and Tourism master
plan in Goa; Defence and Aerospace Policy,
Incentives Policy and Agro Industrial Policy in
Gujarat; MSME Policy and Incubation & Start-up
Policy in Madhya Pradesh.
Western India is a region blessed with infinite
opportunities and ever broadening horizons. CII
through the year worked in close partnership
with various State Governments to showcase the
industrial prowess and the immense possibilities
present in each of the states in the region. CII in
association with State Governments organised
mega investment summits like Global Investor
Summit and MSME Summit in Madhya Pradesh,
Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit in Gujarat,
Vidarbha Investment Summit in Maharashtra
and AROGYA Fair in Goa. These have not
only helped us reinforce our connect with the
government but also enhanced our reputation in
the region.
To improve the business environment in the
region, we have been engaging closely with
the State Governments. We maintained a
close liaison with the State Governments, Chief
Ministers, Ministers, Senior Government Officials
and actively engaged with governments through
active participation in important committees. CII
is on as many as 41 government committees and
task forces in the four states. CII throughout the
year participated in policy dialogues to improve
business environment in the region.
CII has been actively engaging with state
governments in the region to enhance the
Ease of Doing Business. We worked on the
Perception Study on Ease of Doing Business
Reforms in Maharashtra to gauge the on ground
effectiveness of relevant reforms in the state
and the findings will be shared with the State
Government shortly. We are proud to note that
3 out of the 4 Western states have been ranked
among the top 10 Indian states on the DIPP –
World Bank ranking on ease of doing business
for 2016.
To project the strengths of the Western Region,
CII organised a host of flagship forums including
3Annual Report 2016-17
the Manufacturing Summit, BANKing TECH
Summit, Higher Education Summit, Marketing
Conference, HR & IR Conclave, Financial
Distribution Summit, Food & Bev Tech and CFO
Summit besides many others. These were hugely
successful and appreciated by all stakeholders
including government, industry and media.
MSMEs continued to be at the core of our
initiatives in the region. I am happy to report that
this year we specifically focussed on creating
business opportunities for our MSME members
through a series of B2B meetings connecting the
big and small. In fact over 3,000 B2B Meetings
were held this year creating many business
opportunities. We identified Defence as a major
area of focus and 6 industry-defence linkage
forums were created for the benefit of members.
94 training programmes and workshops were
held during the year and over 3,000 individuals
from member companies participated. Industry
is undergoing a disruptive transformation. To
equip members with necessary knowledge
and information to face future challenges, we
initiated the future-ready series in the region. As
part of these sessions, Indian and international
business and thought leaders updated members
on the latest emerging trends especially in
manufacturing. The topics covered include
3D Printing, Robotics, Internet of Things,
Manufacturing 4.0 – Impact on Jobs, Managing
Social Media, E-commerce and M-commerce.
Over 20 such sessions have been conducted
in Western Region benefitting around 1,000
members.
Sustainability continued to figure high on our
agenda in the region. Water being a major area of
concern in the state of Maharashtra, we partnered
with the CII Centre of Excellence on Water to
assess the water situation in 13 drought-prone
districts of Maharashtra where in we undertook
water resource evaluation and planning using
the WATSCAN tool. We undertook the eco-
restoration of Kham River and rejuvenation of
Dudhna River in Aurangabad. In addition, we also
worked on desilting dams around Nashik. Our
Gujarat Knowledge Application and Facilitation
Centre conducted a pilot project demonstration
under the Clean Air Initiative wherein technology
solutions were applied for monitoring air quality
across 9 locations in Ahmedabad to track the
level of outdoor pollution. During the year, we
came out with a compendium of successful case
studies on sustainability and promoted green
buildings and renewable energy among other
areas. Several member companies have done
excellent work in this area.
Western region laid a special thrust on
connecting Industry and Academia. The
Education Excellence Forum, a WR initiative to
address employability concerns and connect
educational institutions with Industry organized
Student Development and Faculty Development
Programmes across the region.
Start-ups have been another key area of focus
in the region this year. We launched the Start-
Up Mentorship Circle with senior CII members
as mentors to young & budding entrepreneurs,
start-ups and MSMEs so that start-ups can scale
up and succeed. We are extending handholding
and mentorship services to as many as 10 start-
ups across sectors in the region.
To explore the possibility of international
business partnerships and collaborations, we
organised around 30 interactive sessions with
Heads of States, Prime Ministers, Ministers and
Ambassadors. This year we had the privilege of
hosting the Prime Ministers of Mauritius, Portugal
and Serbia.
For Make in India to succeed, we need skilled
manpower across sectors. CII in the region
had a major focus on skills development. Our
Chhindwara Skills Training Centre, one-of-its
kind initiative, conceptualized and driven by
industry to create a pool of trained workforce has
so far skilled over 5,000 individuals and aims to
skill 1,500 annually.
Affirmative action is yet another area which
gets our utmost attention. We conducted
several affirmative action training and faculty
development programmes for the SC/ ST
students. We succeeded in having more than
800 companies signing the CII Code of Conduct
under Affirmative Action.
The Western Region continued with the focus
of making the CII presence felt not only in the
state capitals but also deep down into the zones.
We facilitated various engagement forums in the
zones including Aurangabad, Nashik, Nagpur,
Kolhapur, Pune, Thane, Indore, Rajkot, Surat,
Bhavnagar and Vadodara. We consciously
distributed initiatives across the region with the
nucleus being the regional headquarters.
CII strongly supported the Prime Minister’s
Initiatives of Make in India, Digital India, Skill India,
Smart Cities, Start-Up India, Stand-Up India,
Swachh Bharat and worked hand in hand with
relevant authorities to make them a success.
Western Region started a dedicated Taskforce
on Nation Building which aims at connecting
industry, NGOs and institutions. Under the aegis
of this taskforce, a pan India essay competition
on the India We Want was organized for school
and college students. To support the Hon’ble
Prime Minister’s call for ‘Swacch Bharat’ and
to promote cleanliness as a way of life, we
organised several initiatives. The “Phenk Mat"
campaign was launched in Mumbai to make the
city litter-free and improve sanitation practices.
We also undertook a ward-wise cleanliness drive
project “Mazhi City Taka Tak” to educate society
on segregating wet and dry waste and treatment
of the same in Aurangabad.
4 Annual Report 2016-17
Serving as bridge between the state governments
and industry members, we signed MoUs and
have been working closely with Municipal
Corporations in Aurangabad, Pune, Nagpur
and Vadodara on Smart city projects. We have
also worked on various city connect initiatives
in Aurangabad, Nashik, Mumbai, Ahmedabad,
Bhopal and Indore.
Governance is critical to us and was deliberated
upon in our Regional, State and Zonal council
meetings. CII actively promoted the Code of
Conduct on Governance and several members
from the region signed up for the code. Various
sessions on Corporate Governance were also
organised throughout the year.
CII Western Region as part of its Advisory
Services started GST Clinics, a unique initiative
where tax experts resolve GST-related queries of
members. The sessions were conducted across
10 cities in the Western Region and have so far
benefitted over 500 members.
The Confederation engaged media across
its initiatives to support long-term industrial
development in the region. This was primarily
done by disseminating information on CII
initiatives and CII outlook on major policy
announcements in the states.
Membership has been at the core of all our efforts
in the region. I am pleased to share that with the
active support of my colleagues, we have been
able to grow our membership during the year and
many of them came from SME sector. This year,
we added 396 new members. We organized
31 Members’ Meets, 15 New Members’
Induction Programs, 17 Roadshows and 46
Affiliated Associations Meet for the benefit of
our members. We created a pool of 20 mentors
across the region to guide and handhold new
members, so far 108 new members have been
mentored. We also visited over 1,047 members
at their premises and apprised them of various
services being offered by CII. All these efforts
have certainly helped us in further deepening
our bond with our members. To service our
members better and make our offerings more
relevant, we have started measuring membership
engagement on a quarterly basis. For this, we
created a template of Membership Engagement
Metrics comprising of 14 parameters, which has
helped us in identifying the areas of improvement
and bringing in corrective action.
I must acknowledge the sincere and tremendous
efforts put in by the Western Regional Council
– Chairmen, Vice Chairmen of the Sub-
committees, Taskforces, State Councils, Zonal
Councils and State Panels to accomplish
whatever we did during the course of the year.
The past Presidents and Chairmen of the Region
provided unwavering support and guidance
in true CII tradition. I would also like to put on
record my thanks to our President, Dr Naushad
Forbes, President Designate, Ms Shobana
Kamineni, Vice President, Mr Rakesh Bharti
Mittal, and Director General, Mr Chandrajit
Banerjee for their support and timely advices.
My sincere thanks to all our members, without
whose support it would not have been possible
for us to achieve whatever we could. The CII
Secretariat, both in the Western region office and
states, have worked exceedingly hard in the last
one year under the able leadership of Dr Saugat
Mukherjee. I thank all of them for all the hard
work and dedication put in. CII owes its success
to the untiring efforts of the secretariat.
It has been an utmost privilege for me to lead
CII in the Western Region – through times of
exciting new developments as well as challenges
in this part of the country. It was a very humbling
experience to be at the forefront in handling
various sensitive issues that not only affect the
industry but also the society as an ecosystem.
I have been honoured to be in a position that
empowered me to contribute to the economic
development and industrialisation of Western
Region, one of the most vibrant and inspiring
regions in the country. As Chairman of CII
Western Region, I have seen exciting times
with investment commitments from industry
leaders and governments and also witnessed
exuberance in individuals who benefitted from
our training programmes. Armed with supportive
governments keen to introduce reforms, a strong
work culture and industrious workforce, the
region is geared up to soar to higher pinnacles of
growth and development in the years to come.
As team CII, we shall continue our efforts in
the capacity of a pioneer and facilitator in the
cause of Nation Building. As we continue our
journey forward, we shall strive for excellence
and setting new benchmarks to raise the bar
for performance as a team. My association with
CII goes a long way and I will continue to be a
part of this wonderfully enthusiastic and forward-
looking team.
It has been a truly amazing year with all of you and
I have enjoyed every minute of this journey. I wish
all the very best to all members and stakeholders
of the Confederation. Together I am sure we can
all create “The India of our Dreams”.

Edition of BANKing TECH Summit
FinTech: Redefining Banking for Customers
CII organized the decade edition of BANKing
TECH Summit. The objective of the summit
was to capture the paradigm shift in Indian
banking industry, which is expected to
influence technology, business models and
customer experience.
The landscape of India’s financial sector
is changing at a rapid pace with use of
differentiated channels and technology, with
the emergence of a new class of banks- the
small and payments bank. One of the biggest
impacts of technology adoption will be rapidly
accelerating financial inclusion by making last-
mile access more cost effective and expanding
the reach of banking to the unbanked. This
will enable a multi-fold increase of reach in
rural and remote areas through innovation in
products, processes, distribution, payments
and customer service.
Themed, FinTech: Redefining Banking for
Customers, the summit covered a wide range
of topics like Future shape of financial eco-
system in India, Emerging technologies in
banking, Synergies across risk & regulatory
landscape and also an exclusive Thought
Leadership Interactive Roundtable- Embracing
the Fintech Disruption in Banking.
The summit was inaugurated by Mr Subhash
Desai, Hon’ble Minister for Industries,
Government of Maharashtra and the Guest

also witnessed release of report titled- Fintech:
Redefining banking for customers. The study
highlights that technology has evolved from
being a mere tool to enhance efficiency,
reduce cost of operations to being a critical
component of the strategy mix. Whether
it is to scale up business, grow volumes,
service customers, strengthen delivery
channels or manage risk and compliance.
In today’s environment, a bank is constantly
getting bombarded with increasing customer
requirements and the threat of customer loss.

  • 2. 2 Annual Report 2016-17 2016-17 has been a very momentous year for me. As I pass on the mantle of the Chairmanship of the Western region to my successor, and friend, I have immense pride and satisfaction for having been able to play a role in improving CII’s engagement, connect and relevance in the region. This was possible only because of the unstinted support and continuous co-operation provided by each and every member of CII. We have been able to play a lead role in assisting the transformational journey of India. During my years with CII, I have seen this organisation evolve to a national institution for development, working beyond the immediate business interests of the industry. As an institution for development and nation building, CII is geared to strengthen its leadership role in the firmament of industry. Recognising the need to support ‘Make in India’ and to transform the country into a global manufacturing hub, CII adopted the theme - Building National Competitiveness at the national level. The theme emphasises on 6 key areas - Human Development, Corporate Integrity & Good Citizenship, Ease of Doing Business, Innovation & Technical Capability, Sustainability and Global Integration. These areas which form the enablers for building National Competitiveness are further aligned with initiatives focusing on – Start-ups, Water Resources, Stand-up India, Manufacturing, Make in India, Digital India and Smart Cities. CII Western Region, in alignment, adopted the theme of Building Competitiveness: Deliberate Detail; Deliver Delight to understand, define and strategise engagement with key stakeholders like government, member companies, industry at large, society, NGOs and media. To fulfil the Chairman’s Message agenda set by the theme, CII charted, designed and implemented its action plans through Sub- committees, Taskforces, Councils and Working groups. CII also focussed on policy advocacy an important area of intervention. Not only did we take up issues faced by the industry and resolved them to their satisfaction, we also contributed to the formulation of several progressive policies for Western states. These include the Start- up Policy, Logistics & warehousing policy in Maharashtra; IT Policy and Tourism master plan in Goa; Defence and Aerospace Policy, Incentives Policy and Agro Industrial Policy in Gujarat; MSME Policy and Incubation & Start-up Policy in Madhya Pradesh. Western India is a region blessed with infinite opportunities and ever broadening horizons. CII through the year worked in close partnership with various State Governments to showcase the industrial prowess and the immense possibilities present in each of the states in the region. CII in association with State Governments organised mega investment summits like Global Investor Summit and MSME Summit in Madhya Pradesh, Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit in Gujarat, Vidarbha Investment Summit in Maharashtra and AROGYA Fair in Goa. These have not only helped us reinforce our connect with the government but also enhanced our reputation in the region. To improve the business environment in the region, we have been engaging closely with the State Governments. We maintained a close liaison with the State Governments, Chief Ministers, Ministers, Senior Government Officials and actively engaged with governments through active participation in important committees. CII is on as many as 41 government committees and task forces in the four states. CII throughout the year participated in policy dialogues to improve business environment in the region. CII has been actively engaging with state governments in the region to enhance the Ease of Doing Business. We worked on the Perception Study on Ease of Doing Business Reforms in Maharashtra to gauge the on ground effectiveness of relevant reforms in the state and the findings will be shared with the State Government shortly. We are proud to note that 3 out of the 4 Western states have been ranked among the top 10 Indian states on the DIPP – World Bank ranking on ease of doing business for 2016. To project the strengths of the Western Region, CII organised a host of flagship forums including
  • 3. 3Annual Report 2016-17 the Manufacturing Summit, BANKing TECH Summit, Higher Education Summit, Marketing Conference, HR & IR Conclave, Financial Distribution Summit, Food & Bev Tech and CFO Summit besides many others. These were hugely successful and appreciated by all stakeholders including government, industry and media. MSMEs continued to be at the core of our initiatives in the region. I am happy to report that this year we specifically focussed on creating business opportunities for our MSME members through a series of B2B meetings connecting the big and small. In fact over 3,000 B2B Meetings were held this year creating many business opportunities. We identified Defence as a major area of focus and 6 industry-defence linkage forums were created for the benefit of members. 94 training programmes and workshops were held during the year and over 3,000 individuals from member companies participated. Industry is undergoing a disruptive transformation. To equip members with necessary knowledge and information to face future challenges, we initiated the future-ready series in the region. As part of these sessions, Indian and international business and thought leaders updated members on the latest emerging trends especially in manufacturing. The topics covered include 3D Printing, Robotics, Internet of Things, Manufacturing 4.0 – Impact on Jobs, Managing Social Media, E-commerce and M-commerce. Over 20 such sessions have been conducted in Western Region benefitting around 1,000 members. Sustainability continued to figure high on our agenda in the region. Water being a major area of concern in the state of Maharashtra, we partnered with the CII Centre of Excellence on Water to assess the water situation in 13 drought-prone districts of Maharashtra where in we undertook water resource evaluation and planning using the WATSCAN tool. We undertook the eco- restoration of Kham River and rejuvenation of Dudhna River in Aurangabad. In addition, we also worked on desilting dams around Nashik. Our Gujarat Knowledge Application and Facilitation Centre conducted a pilot project demonstration under the Clean Air Initiative wherein technology solutions were applied for monitoring air quality across 9 locations in Ahmedabad to track the level of outdoor pollution. During the year, we came out with a compendium of successful case studies on sustainability and promoted green buildings and renewable energy among other areas. Several member companies have done excellent work in this area. Western region laid a special thrust on connecting Industry and Academia. The Education Excellence Forum, a WR initiative to address employability concerns and connect educational institutions with Industry organized Student Development and Faculty Development Programmes across the region. Start-ups have been another key area of focus in the region this year. We launched the Start- Up Mentorship Circle with senior CII members as mentors to young & budding entrepreneurs, start-ups and MSMEs so that start-ups can scale up and succeed. We are extending handholding and mentorship services to as many as 10 start- ups across sectors in the region. To explore the possibility of international business partnerships and collaborations, we organised around 30 interactive sessions with Heads of States, Prime Ministers, Ministers and Ambassadors. This year we had the privilege of hosting the Prime Ministers of Mauritius, Portugal and Serbia. For Make in India to succeed, we need skilled manpower across sectors. CII in the region had a major focus on skills development. Our Chhindwara Skills Training Centre, one-of-its kind initiative, conceptualized and driven by industry to create a pool of trained workforce has so far skilled over 5,000 individuals and aims to skill 1,500 annually. Affirmative action is yet another area which gets our utmost attention. We conducted several affirmative action training and faculty development programmes for the SC/ ST students. We succeeded in having more than 800 companies signing the CII Code of Conduct under Affirmative Action. The Western Region continued with the focus of making the CII presence felt not only in the state capitals but also deep down into the zones. We facilitated various engagement forums in the zones including Aurangabad, Nashik, Nagpur, Kolhapur, Pune, Thane, Indore, Rajkot, Surat, Bhavnagar and Vadodara. We consciously distributed initiatives across the region with the nucleus being the regional headquarters. CII strongly supported the Prime Minister’s Initiatives of Make in India, Digital India, Skill India, Smart Cities, Start-Up India, Stand-Up India, Swachh Bharat and worked hand in hand with relevant authorities to make them a success. Western Region started a dedicated Taskforce on Nation Building which aims at connecting industry, NGOs and institutions. Under the aegis of this taskforce, a pan India essay competition on the India We Want was organized for school and college students. To support the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s call for ‘Swacch Bharat’ and to promote cleanliness as a way of life, we organised several initiatives. The “Phenk Mat" campaign was launched in Mumbai to make the city litter-free and improve sanitation practices. We also undertook a ward-wise cleanliness drive project “Mazhi City Taka Tak” to educate society on segregating wet and dry waste and treatment of the same in Aurangabad.
  • 4. 4 Annual Report 2016-17 Serving as bridge between the state governments and industry members, we signed MoUs and have been working closely with Municipal Corporations in Aurangabad, Pune, Nagpur and Vadodara on Smart city projects. We have also worked on various city connect initiatives in Aurangabad, Nashik, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Bhopal and Indore. Governance is critical to us and was deliberated upon in our Regional, State and Zonal council meetings. CII actively promoted the Code of Conduct on Governance and several members from the region signed up for the code. Various sessions on Corporate Governance were also organised throughout the year. CII Western Region as part of its Advisory Services started GST Clinics, a unique initiative where tax experts resolve GST-related queries of members. The sessions were conducted across 10 cities in the Western Region and have so far benefitted over 500 members. The Confederation engaged media across its initiatives to support long-term industrial development in the region. This was primarily done by disseminating information on CII initiatives and CII outlook on major policy announcements in the states. Membership has been at the core of all our efforts in the region. I am pleased to share that with the active support of my colleagues, we have been able to grow our membership during the year and many of them came from SME sector. This year, we added 396 new members. We organized 31 Members’ Meets, 15 New Members’ Induction Programs, 17 Roadshows and 46 Affiliated Associations Meet for the benefit of our members. We created a pool of 20 mentors across the region to guide and handhold new members, so far 108 new members have been mentored. We also visited over 1,047 members at their premises and apprised them of various services being offered by CII. All these efforts have certainly helped us in further deepening our bond with our members. To service our members better and make our offerings more relevant, we have started measuring membership engagement on a quarterly basis. For this, we created a template of Membership Engagement Metrics comprising of 14 parameters, which has helped us in identifying the areas of improvement and bringing in corrective action. I must acknowledge the sincere and tremendous efforts put in by the Western Regional Council – Chairmen, Vice Chairmen of the Sub- committees, Taskforces, State Councils, Zonal Councils and State Panels to accomplish whatever we did during the course of the year. The past Presidents and Chairmen of the Region provided unwavering support and guidance in true CII tradition. I would also like to put on record my thanks to our President, Dr Naushad Forbes, President Designate, Ms Shobana Kamineni, Vice President, Mr Rakesh Bharti Mittal, and Director General, Mr Chandrajit Banerjee for their support and timely advices. My sincere thanks to all our members, without whose support it would not have been possible for us to achieve whatever we could. The CII Secretariat, both in the Western region office and states, have worked exceedingly hard in the last one year under the able leadership of Dr Saugat Mukherjee. I thank all of them for all the hard work and dedication put in. CII owes its success to the untiring efforts of the secretariat. It has been an utmost privilege for me to lead CII in the Western Region – through times of exciting new developments as well as challenges in this part of the country. It was a very humbling experience to be at the forefront in handling various sensitive issues that not only affect the industry but also the society as an ecosystem. I have been honoured to be in a position that empowered me to contribute to the economic development and industrialisation of Western Region, one of the most vibrant and inspiring regions in the country. As Chairman of CII Western Region, I have seen exciting times with investment commitments from industry leaders and governments and also witnessed exuberance in individuals who benefitted from our training programmes. Armed with supportive governments keen to introduce reforms, a strong work culture and industrious workforce, the region is geared up to soar to higher pinnacles of growth and development in the years to come. As team CII, we shall continue our efforts in the capacity of a pioneer and facilitator in the cause of Nation Building. As we continue our journey forward, we shall strive for excellence and setting new benchmarks to raise the bar for performance as a team. My association with CII goes a long way and I will continue to be a part of this wonderfully enthusiastic and forward- looking team. It has been a truly amazing year with all of you and I have enjoyed every minute of this journey. I wish all the very best to all members and stakeholders of the Confederation.
