1. Where does eResearch support fit into the uni library research
support model? Is research data management enough?
Library support for research: roles and support, Stephen Pinfield, University
of Sheffield. The second RRLM workshop on the ‘Role of the Library in the
Research Process’ was held at the University of Leeds on 1 July 2013.
Library Skills!
Knowledge e.g. understanding of research cycle and HE trends
Established professional skills e.g. information management
New professional skills e.g. RDM, bibliometrics
Technology skills e.g. repository (and...data, tools, infrastructure?)
Subject expertise e.g. sources (and...data, tools, infrastructure?)
Management disciplines e.g. project and change management
Communication skills e.g. training and liaison (and..data, tools, infrastructure?)
Mindsets e.g. proactive approach
Where does the research support for
using research data, tools, platforms
and infrastructure lie in universities?

What does
eResearch need?
↪↪↪↪↪
Nexus 1: ‘datafied’ scholarship (yes!)
Nexus 2: connected learning
Nexus 3: service-oriented libraries
Nexus 4: blurred identities
Nexus 5: intensified contextual pressures
Mapping the Future of Academic Libraries:
A Report for SCONUL. Pinder, Cox & Rutter,
Nov 2017.
Nexus 1: ‘datafied’ scholarship - research
increasingly underpinned by large datasets
and digital artefacts, involving open,
networked, algorithmically-driven systems.
Nexus 4: blurred identities - boundaries
between professional groups and services
being broken down with more collaboration
and new skills development.
Notes de l'éditeur
Just like this pussy cat, struggling to get through this gap in the shelving space, and into the open space. There is a gap in eResearch support and a lot that could be done in the open space. Once you’re in the open space, you can see what’s on the shelves, and you can make informed choices, about what to do. What’s on the shelves, the two peaks in the evidence from this report from SCONUL indicate that strategic, communication and relationship management skills are critical and need to come to the fore in research libraries, as well as, data and technology oriented skills, these are important.
