Biographies are important pieces of business collateral as they help further brand your company and the expertise and skill from the executive team behind it – especially for leadership and financing businesses. The team and I worked to create these branded biographies that help effectively illustrate the vast, colorful and successfully minted experiences that Greg and his partner have with the orthopedic industry and helping to finance healthcare companies.

My Work: United Orthopedic Group Executive Biographies

An entrepreneur with a 30-year legacy of building highly successful orthopedic companies, Greg
Nelson is again putting his industry savvy to work as the Chairman and CEO of United Orthopedic
Group, Inc. (UOG), a holding company on a path of aggressive organic and acquisition growth.
Greg founded UOG in October 2007 in partnership with Joel Radtke and with start-up financing
from Essex Woodlands Health Ventures, one of the nation’s largest health care-focused private
equity firms. Under Greg’s leadership as Chairman and CEO, UOG has since acquired managing
interests in Bledsoe Brace Systems and Viscent Orthopedic Solutions and its related orthotic
practices. Through strategic acquisitions like these, UOG is pairing industry-leading orthopedic
product manufacturers with respected orthopedic service providers to help all parties grow their
businesses.
Greg began his orthopedic products career in 1977 when he co-founded DonJoy Orthopedics,
a sports medicine and knee brace company now called DJO Inc. Over the course of 18 years,
he helped grow DonJoy from a start-up operation to a leading orthopedic company with
130 sales representatives and annual sales of $75 million.
The catalyst to DonJoy’s accelerated growth was building the DonJoy team and their innovative
sales strategy. Unique and unusual for an orthopedic bracing company at the time, Greg’s sales
force marketed directly to doctors who control the product usage — a practice which has since
become the industry standard.
In 1987 Greg sold DonJoy to Smith & Nephew PLC, a publicly-held British health care company.
Greg continued as the President of the DonJoy subsidiary of Smith & Nephew and continued to
grow the company 25% annually until he resigned to pursue other opportunities in 1995. From a
humble beginning in a friend’s garage, DonJoy grew to control 40% of the worldwide knee brace
market. The company was acquired by the Blackstone Group in late 2007 for $1.6 billion.
In 1990 while still President of DonJoy, Greg co-founded the diversified orthopedic company BREG,
Inc. and accepted the position of Chairman. With product lines including cold therapy, physical
therapy kits, pain care, knee bracing and soft goods, BREG’s mission was to pursue diversified
product lines sold in the orthopedic channel.
“I’ve contemplated retirement more than once,” Greg reflects.“But there
is nothing quite like the thrill of helping a growing company realize its full
potential. We work to find the best talent, build the most competitive teams,
optimize the product line and make sure that our team and products are
supported by a solid infrastructure.Certainly, putting all the pieces in
place is challenging — but it’s a challenge our team enjoys!”

In 1995 when Greg joined BREG fulltime, the company was generating $2 million of annual revenue
and had an independent network generating minimal commissions from selling the BREG product
line. Greg and his team built a network of 140 representatives who were generating a majority of
their income from selling BREG products. While he was chairman, the company grew consistently at
a rate of more than 20 percent a year, until annual revenues exceeded $60 million.
In late 2003, BREG was acquired by Orthofix International for $150 million.
Greg is a highly regarded philanthropist, active in charitable activities throughout San Diego County
for more than 30 years. In 1991 he was named Carlsbad’s Citizen of the Year, in 2005 the local Boys
& Girls Club awarded Greg the Humanitarian of the Year and in 2006 the Carlsbad Chamber of
Commerce named him its first Philanthropist of the Year. In 2008, Greg was elected into the National
Boys & Girls Club Hall of Fame for his devotion of substantial time to the organization — an honor
bestowed on such prominent individuals as Colin Powell, Denzel Washington and Jennifer Lopez.
Greg is a proud member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes
Tom Landry team. In 2009, Carlsbad High School inducted Greg as a charter member of their
Hall of Fame. Greg and his wife, Barbi, and their four children live in Carlsbad, California.
