It is just more realistic.
6. Driving Range & Battery Size
6 www.seai.ie
• Battery sizes are increasing
• Older models typically 24kWh
• 40kWh and 60kWh are todays common capacities
Progression of batteries with driving range
• 2011 – 18kWh – 60-80km
• 2013 – 24kWh – 100-140km
• 2015 – 24kWh – 120-160km
• 2017 – 30kWh – 150-200km
• 2019 – 60kWh – 300-430km

• Electric assisted cargo bikes
• Quadra cycles
• Cars
• Small vans
• Large vans
• 7.5T / 10T trucks
• Buses
• Utility Vehicles
10. Servicing & Maintenance

• Standard physical inspection
• Diagnostic checks
• Braking systems
• Tyres
• Suspension system
• Wiper blades
• Less time
• Less materials
• Less hassle
11. Financial Benefits
11 www.seai.ie
• Vehicle Grants
• Lower fuel costs
• Lower maintenance
• Lower road tax
• Accelerated Capital Allowance
(including charging equipment)
• Benefit in Kind for employees (means
more attractive compensation)
• Lower road tolls
12. Vehicle Grants
12 www.seai.ie
One of the areas where SEAI provide support is a grant towards the purchase of electric vehicles
These include all purchases of an N1 vehicle, regardless of the declared customer type. A maximum
grant of €3,800 is available for qualifying EVs when purchased commercially. Approved EVs with a
list price of less than €14,000 will not receive a grant.
13. Fuel Costs
13 www.seai.ie
Studies show that an electric vehicle running cost can be as little as 20% of the cost
of a similar size diesel engine.
Recharging of vehicles on night rate electricity tariffs ensures you maximise the
savings with electricity rates close to half of a standard daytime rate.
Controlling fuel costs is recognised as a major contributor to
competiveness by many companies
14. Road Tax
14 www.seai.ie
Direct CO2 emission values are used to calculate the Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) and
annual Motor Tax bands for vehicles. Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) have no tail pipe
emissions of CO2. Plugin Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV) should have CO2 emissions
circa 60 g/km. Motor Tax in January 2019 for a BEV is €120 per annum and typically €170
per annum for a PHEV.
15. Accelerated Capital Allowance
15 www.seai.ie
The Accelerated Capital Allowance (ACA) is a tax incentive scheme that promotes investment in
Triple E registered equipment. The Triple E register is a list of products approved as being
energy efficient. Organisations can offset against their profits up to the value of their full
investment in energy efficient products.
16. Benefit in Kind
16 www.seai.ie
Where companies provide company vehicles to their staff and
directors, Benefit in Kind (BiK) tax is applicable. This is a
significant tax payable by the staff member or director on what
might otherwise be a perk of the persons reward package.
BEV’s currently qualify for a 0% BiK rate on the first €50,000 of the
vehicle value without any mileage conditions.
PHEV vehicles do not qualify for this relief as they can still
consume fossil fuels.
17. Electric Vehicle Toll Incentive Scheme
17 www.seai.ie
Under the 2018 budget, DTTAS secured
funding to support a reduced tolling
scheme for Electric Vehicles. The
scheme is referred to as the ‘Electric
Vehicle Toll Incentive (EVTI) Scheme’.
The scheme commenced on the 1st of
July 2018 and is expected to run until
December 31st 2022 (or up to a
maximum of c. 50,000 EVs.)
The scheme refunds are capped at €500
per calendar year for private vehicles
and €1,000 per calendar year for goods
vehicles.
Participating Vehicles must be registered and approved for the EVTI scheme by EVTI Toll Tag
Providers and require a Toll Tag as supplied by an EVTI Toll Tag Provider.
18. Other Benefits
18 www.seai.ie
• Reduces GHC and other harmful emissions
• Low Noise
• Enjoyable to drive
• Supports a clean brand image
• Contributes to CSR
19. Summary
19 www.seai.ie
• Vehicle technologies are evolving
• Range of vehicles is widening and deepening
• Maintenance savings are attractive
• Wide range of financial support
• Social and environmental benefits
• Last years assessment may be outdated.
