PROFILE
My major is computer science .The journey for me
in this course has been absolutely delightful where I
got to learn so much ,My perception about gender ,
race and communites around us drastically changed
.Designing a community around probably is the
most complicated thing .In this class we tried to
understand the fairness and how reasonable is the
designing around , where we need to break the
original stereotypes .Secondly what I understood was the religion how people around are
discriminated , Its important to protect our roots and be proud of who we are not someone what
others want us to be .I understand this as designing a community depends on us to live up a
healthy lifestyle , live, work and play
Week1 introduction
This thread provides you with an opportunity to "meet" each other and initiate a
connection with participants in your group. In responding to this discussion thread, please
introduce yourself and provide us with one interesting fact about yourself. After posting
your introduction, take a look through and reply to some of the others. The purpose of this
exercise is to develop a sense of community. You might find that you share similar
experiences and can help each other in many ways throughout the semester.
My name is suyash I am computer science major ,I am a junior exploring out new possibilities
and innovating new thing has always been my passion .I was born and raised in India but soon
couple of years later my parents immigrated to seattle wa.Currently I have my own start up
called Sensihub (you can email me for more details )
Buffalo is a fun place to live in ,my experiemce here has been great except the snow where you
can do a lot of fun things .I love hiking , playing squash and a great harry potter fan ,i am really
excited about this course will help me look into the diverse background which will be helpful in
my professional growth
Thread 2: Response to "What is design?" from Hello World
On “What is design?” from Hello World: Where Design Meets Life by Alice Rawsthron
The author opened her chapter with the example of Ying Zheng, the ruler of the Qin
empire, one of the most powerful and enduring empires I the history of China. She
explained how design innovation contributed to Ying Zheng’s success. For example, in the
development of weaponry, he resolved many problems by standardizing parts, and this
single innovation gave his armies great advantage over other armies.
For this discussion, let’s move away from 246 B.C. China, and into the U.S. Describe an
innovation or invention (can be current or historical) that gave advantage to a group of
people in the U.S. or to the population as a whole. What were the social impacts of this
innovation? Were any groups negatively impacted by this innovation? For example, the
telegraph, developed and patented in the United States in 1837 by Samuel Morse,
permitted people and commerce to transmit messages across both continents and oceans
almost instantly, with widespread social and economic impacts. This heightened
communication speed allowed business persons to make decisions with up-to-date
information, often resulting in big profits. Those without access had to rely on out-dated
information, which put them at a disadvantage.
I am going to discuss about the INTERNET .This is one of the most essential thing in life and we
cannot imagine life without it internet is the global system of interconnected computer networks.
It is a network of networks that consists of private, public, academic, business, and government
networks of local to global scope, linked by a broad array of electronic, wireless, and optical
networking technologies .A lot big business are dependent on internet such as AMAZON.COM
,this industry is challenging creates employment for the people around .
As far as the negative outcome of this feature this service can be expensive (more money you
give you get faster Internet ) ,weather conditions play a huge role in the Internet services at times
the service goes down due to rain or storms . Its hard in this 21st century to imagine life without
Internet , it makes things easier and work is done is an efficient way . A certain section of crowd
disagree with the same they believe Internet makes mankind lazy, they dont work hard for it !
Thread 3: Response to "Introduction" from Diversity and Design
On “Introduction” from Diversity and Design: Understanding Hidden Consequences
The editors state that “diverse participation in the design process, from both professionals
and public citizens alike, yields more equitable results.” This makes sense, but typically has
not been the case. Nonetheless, many marginalized groups have impacted design in ways
that have changed our visual and physical worlds as well
as our systems, policies, and institutions. For example, in
the 1960s, disability rights advocates designed media
events to raise awareness about barriers in the physical
environment. They persisted with their efforts for
decades, and, finally, in 1990, the Americans with
Disabilities Act became law. It mandated accessibility in
public accommodations such as restaurants and stores,
public transportation, communication, and other areas of
public life. This dramatically changed our physical
environment (from curb cuts to ramps to automatic
doors) and the results made public life more equitable.
Now it’s your turn. Describe a design that was impacted
by a diversity group. How and why did it change form and/or circumstances? (Note that a
design can be anything requiring planning and development prior to the production of an
action, system, visual, material object, or environment. Also, keep in mind that, for our
purposes, a diversity group is a group of individuals who are underrepresented in society in
some way—children, older adults, the economically disadvantaged, those with cognitive
disabilities, etc.)
America is a progressive nation where everyone is welcome , each and every person in
different sections in the society is taken care of.They specially make building to
accommodate everyone .people with all sorts of disabilities such as ramp walk at the same place
instead of stairs ,in elevators the numbers are also written in braille script (read by blind people)
.These people I say have a very tough life and face a lot of challenges in life ,but they like to be
independent and way more motivated than the person who abled .
Last summer I had done my summer intership with an NGO name mitra jyothi in bangalore they
are working for people with disability in general and visually impaired,my job was to manage
out entries in accounts department and at times .A junior computer instructor in one of the
classes teaching programming with the help of JAWS .They are motivated to learn and hunger to
capture the world can be seen .
The invention of this symbol and special privileges for disabled people began after Disabilities
Act of 1990, it is compulsory to accommodate everyone it protects the nation and no one can be
discriminated if they deserve to be the part of it, some famous building which come with the best
disability accommodation as far as i have seen Seattle space needle

Response to Media/Society Chapter and TED Talk on Photographs
Thread 1: FROM: Chapter in Media/Society and TED Talk Photos that Changed the World
Where would you place the images shown in Photos That Changed the World
into Croteau and Hoynes' diagram entitled “Model of Media and the Social World”?
Identify a mass media photograph taken in your own lifetime that has served as an icon of
an event. (Feel free to add an attachment.) What roles does this photo play in the
communication of the event?
I really like the way of describing thing or narrating things through pictures ,these picture come
under the category of "mass and media product ".These pictures always try to express themselves
or try to send out a message which normally articles cannot do , Some of the images were about
the disaster such as civil war, dead people stacked together, Another image about earthquake a
natural disaster. These are some dreadful scenerios and its very unlikely if we are suffered in the
same normally innocents are the one who get affected the most from these situations .
The photo i have used as my example for this situation is from terrorist attack in
akshardham temple in gujarat india , a bunch of terrorist came in and started open firing and
hijacked a temple a holy place where people pray where number of innocents were killed and
some were made as hostages ,it is one of the darkest nights in the Indian history ,Indian rescue
team were always on there toes it took them 72 hours to find and kill all the possible terrorist and
stop all their activities ,at times these soldiers are the unsung heroes who are doing their duty but
at the end it much more than that . this is surely a true example of bravery by these soldiers
Response to Articles on Hats as Communication Design
Thread 2: FROM: “Fashioning Protest for the Women’s March on Washington” and “The
Worst Design of 2016 Was Also the Most Effective”
NOTE: Use the first three part of the SEE-IT method of critical thinking (State, Elaborate,
Exemplify) to address the following questions:
Typically, we do not think of hats as elements of mass media or social media. However, the
two hats (red and pink) discussed in the articles certainly have taken on that role. Why the
two hats (red and pink) are mentioned in the articles vehicles of communication design?
What meanings do each of the two hats carry? In terms of communication design, how are
they similar? And how are they different from one another?
This topic is debatable ,discussion in the two articles talk about recent presidential elections, I
still remember when president Donald j trump was elected as president probably one of the
darkest days in the American history ,the red hat in this article typically represents presidents
campaign "MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN ", this was his election manifesto ,well the
targeted audience were just the working Americans trying to get back ,but he had no plan how to
do and what to do .Where as Hillary was more appreciated to be the next president she was
sensible and realistic .I still don't believe the fact why people choose him ? what made them do
so in terms of choices in life ,now since he is elected there is always a terror of fear what will
happen next ,I truly feel he is a symbol to hate and incite violence . The hat categorized its
wearers as Trump supporters, Middle Americans who were tired of elitists. A designated hat
simply shows a support for their leader by the particular group at first . Where as the pink hat
was designed against trump ,womens marching on the road ,"people of all sex trying to get there
acceptance " ,people trying hard as they need insurance basically opposite of a trump supporter
In terms of communication setting up voice in the
society think both are equal , targeting different section of
the crowd , the red hat are the one where the president
promised to give the jobs , not to hire foreign workers
,immigration ban etc where as pink hat is more towards
success in terms of long term goal where everyone is
welcome if you have the urge to do the things right eg
google hires 75 % people from all over the world such a
diverse culture ,just trying to make a differ
Week 3
Thread 1: Response to “Industrial Design” by John Heskett and "The Incredible
Inventions of Intuitive AI" by Maurice Conti
In his chapter on industrial design (written in 1987), historian John Heskett claims that the
methods of mass production introduced by Henry Ford in the U.S. involved new concepts
of the standardization and integration of the production line that were adopted across the
world. With Ford’s method, relatively unskilled workers could complete work; it was more
efficient and with this method, products were made more quickly and cheaply than
previously possible. What were some of the social consequences of Ford’s production line?
In other words, how did this system change our U.S. society? Do any of those changes
remain with us today? Now consider Maurice Conti’s TED Talk, and the predictions he
makes about production. How do you think manufacturing processes will change in the
next twenty years? How do you think these changes will affect our U.S. society?
This article talks about how initially the products were hand made before that era was completely
different where everything was more customize , the quality quantity and size varied even it was
made by the same person over there it came with the human touch , but the things looks like its
changing now the introduction of conveyor belt and Ford's production line where most of the
production is automated through big machinery Then the mass production was enabled, and
people got less jobs to do as there job were getting killed , a good example of this is amazon go
store and amazon robotics , In the go store its completely human free store where
everything works on the artificial intelligence and algorithmic based , where you just walk in and
walk you and you are all set ,In the amazon robotics this is more used in the amazon warehouse
where robots pick up stuff as per customer orders and allocates in different areas there machine
can pick up upto 700lbs way more than humans can pick up.
Well this is probably not the best this but one of the most efficient ways mankind is fighting
from this complicated life around it ,most of the sectors if robots are replaced , like they should
be way to dependable another example over here is the self driven cars by Google this is all done
by artificial intelligence and deep learning algorithm but depending completely on this is way too
much of a risk as its a matter of life and death , In the test runs no matter car responded pretty
well no matter with unusual traffic or someone suddenly crossing the road. These jobs replacing
human not even killing someones living but spoiling the community relatio
Thread 2: Response IDEA Awards and Cradle-to-Cradle Video
NOTE: Use the first three part of the SEE-IT method of critical thinking (State, Elaborate,
Exemplify) to address the following questions:
Which of the 2016 IDEA Gold Award products seems to defy the Cradle-to-Cradle concept
developed by architect William McDonough and chemist Dr. Michael Braungart? How
does this product resist or disregard the concept? Do you know of any products that
embrace Cradle-to-Cradle design? If so, please describe.
The Light bulb concept from the 2016 IDEA Gold Awards seems the most to defy the Cradle-to-
Cradle concept.Light bulbs are among those everyday household and workplace products that
seem so inconsequential yet are vital for commerce and leisure. They are easy to replace and
relatively cheap to buy.Another reason is their short lifespan is that another newer and better
model comes out so people usually buy the newer device, some of the parts can be
reused, redesigning for recyclability .Converting bulbs to leds , working on the design
integration and the hardware unit of the bulb. The approach of our project should be flexible
enough to withstand other future lighting technologies coming along.
Although the LED is the important bit, it's as much about the system
.Some companies have started to integrate these light bulbs with the
smart home feature such as google home where you can switch off the
light with phone through the internet , just to save the resources and use
them well i consider this to be a cradle to cradle till the time people are disposing there old bulbs
correctly . This is the because the cleaning products now are mostly safe for the environment and
they come in is recyclable
Week 4
Thread 1: Response to All Module 4 Materials
Your readings and viewings this week present different ways of thinking about
architecture. Mies Van der Rohe describes architecture as “The will of the epoch translated
into space.” Andrew Ballantyne describes architecture as the background for life. Jeanne
Gang describes it as the act of building relationships. All agree that architecture can
change based on context and culture. Choose two works of architecture from any of your
materials this week—one with sensibilities about the past and one with sensibilities about
the present and/or future. How do each of these buildings either reflect or challenge their
cultural contexts? (Use the SEE-IT method to respond to this question.)
I am going to talk about the high rise with fenky architecture with true meaning behind it that
jeanne gang said and second dallas airport moving lounges
The Wainwright building set the standard for modern skyscrapers, unique with it's thin metal
frame to keep it standing tall. where people can gather around the fireplace to share their ideas
and gathering around there. In nowadays,we are so emphasize the idea of sharing idea and
protect environment around us . The building wall is made of chords and its good for the planet
because the tree can absorb carbon hence they were designed and eco friendly . The skyscraper
was created at a time when the Industrial Revolution just started companies put their venture
capital on these building to grow them and scale new heights .
The Dulles Airport was a great innovation made for the new form of transportation, jet
aircraft. The Dulles Airport was a great innovation made for the new form of
transportation, jet aircraft. for examplae dallas airport have huge concourses
which take them around the plane there are different sign boards which tell
them approximation time they will take to travel, this was a matter of attention specially for the
old traveller mobile lounge were developed just like where you board that took people to their
planes from the actual airport itself. This is no longer needed because the planes are parked at the
walkway to the plane and it's much faster to get around inside the airport nowadays.
Thread 2: Response to Ballantyne and Zumthor Articles
Andrew Ballantyne and Peter Zumthor present ideas about architecture that seem to value
the sensorial and material elements of life. How are Ballantyne’s and Zumthor’s viewpoints
on architecture alike? More importantly, how do they differ? (Use the SEE-IT method to
respond to this question.)
Ballantyne and Zumthor are similar in that they both have found a deeper meaning to
architecture how the mutual understanding i developed between people on their daily day to day
living ,they recall every specific detail about the building . Ballantyne discusses humans having a
relationship with their buildings. Zumthor explains his aunt's house in painstaking detail,
explaining several nooks and crannies of the house. According to their perspectives buildings are
not just some type of art but also interactive materials that can be more than concrete with
specific habits or sensations built in. Ballantyne is way more careful towards architecture and
believes that architecture should be selfproclaimed what you feel is the best while Zumthor takes
the more logical approach to architecture and designs based on what is reasonable. His belief
towards architecture reflects the architecture as resistance to strong message, that "speaks its
own language." He argues that, in a society that is "irrrelivant", architecture makes its own stand
and can "speak" its own language.
Week 5
Thread 1: Response to Levy Article
Here is your discussion question on the Levy article. Please post your own response, and
respond to at least two other students' responses.
John Levy’s article, “An Overview: The Need for Planning,” discussed ways in which
planning can determine the characteristics of a place. For example, some smaller towns
restrict the heights of buildings to maintain a certain scale. How did planning define the
character of the place in which you grew up?
Before I read Levy's article, Planning is one of the most important thing and is practiced by all
the individual around , planning a city can be a challenging job , specially where i was born
Bangalore the silicon valley of india. The city has deep history in it self as it was under a king
rule , attracts lot of tourists from all over the world , as a technological hub the city is growing
every year a lot of big firm such as yahoo , google etc have their base in the city . Building
skyscrapers will interrupt the view from those ancient buildings. Recently, the planner in my
hometown start to allow people to build high building in areas where are far away from the
historical site.Planning is efficiently done. for its in Bangalore being the silicon valley is know
for it intreconnection of roads, cleanliness, food, entertainment parks, business, environmentally
friendly, shopping malls, intercity transportation , storehouses, warehouses, . They make
development plans and try to finish up with the estimation date. These projects are designed they
can be afforded to all the sections in the society such rich , middle and poor . Building should be
constructed as per city regulations , and compliance in bangalore no high rises are allowed as its
prone to earth quakes they prefer a low rise they prefer a low rise bulding there
Thread 2: Response to Pruitt Igoe Project, Talen, and Larson
Here is your discussion question on the Pruitt Igoe project, the Talen article, and
the Larson lecture. article. Please post your own response, and respond to at least two other
students' responses.
Imagine that you are part of a urban planning and design firm working with Emily Talen
(author of “Design That Enables Diversity”) and Kent Larson (who gave the TED Talk
"Brilliant Designs to Fit More People In Every City" The thee of you have been tasked
with developing a plan to rebuild Pruitt Igoe in St. Louis. City officials told the three of you
that that they want to do it right this time. Identify three strategies for rebuilding Pruitt
Igoe in ways that promise to be more successful. What would Talen do? What would
Larson do? What would you do? How would your strategies differ from those of the
original urban planners/designers of the project? Why would your strategies be more
effective?
Pruitt Igoe's architects did not consider diversity as a
dominant feature for their design which would need
attention in the long run, and due to this Pruitt-
Igoe turned out to be a failure. If given a chance to
rebuild Pruitt Igoe, Talen would construct it in a way,
such that, he could make it more diverse by attracting
people of different income and not just for the low-income. He could do it in a way by attracting
more business so that employment rate increases and so does the minimum wage which in turn
will make people with various income living in the same society. On the other hand, Larson
would try to use technology as a tool to build smarter homes and societies that could
accommodate more people in the lesser amount of area. Also, he would use the technology to
make a more efficient style of living which would attract more people.
Given a chance to rebuild Pruitt Igoe, the key feature to consider would be to keep the area
diverse. Diversity is the key to bringing various kinds of people living together under one roof
and bringing diversity into the society. The second most important thing would be providing
education, basic necessities to all the people by constructing Schools, Hospitals, convenience
stores and other such things in the nearby area for the people living near them. Also, one of the
most important thing to keep in mind is to provide employment opportunities to the people
which eventually would result in a decrease in crime rate and make it safer for the people living
in that area. Eventually, I would try to make the houses efficient and use the technology
Week 6
Thread 1: Response to F.L. Olmsted
Displaying his plan at the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, Frederick Law
Olmsted stated that "Buffalo is the best planned city, as to its streets, public places, and
grounds, in the United States, if not in the world." What was the basis for this claim?
Would Olmsted still make that claim today? Why or why not?
On the basis of the claim I think buffalo is one of the best planned cities so far I have ever seen ,
where different parks are present livestock is preserved and mantaining one of the world
heritage site "Niagara Falls ", the niagara fall still attract millions of visitor every year. Some
people would think it is one of the most beautiful place they have ever seen. Parks in Buffalo is
not that outstanding anymore. You can find the the urban park system allover the world. There
are parks that are bigger and more beautiful. And among those urban parks the Olmsted park in
Buffalo was the most beautifully planned one harmonizing greatly with the surrounding
landscapes and rural regions. Olmsted can still make this claim today about Buffalo. His first
Landscape Architectural success. I have not been to many other places in the United States but
the Video I have seen of Olmsted and I can look Buffalo in the present day it feels the same
Thread 2: Response to Walter Hood's Work
Identify something that should be memorialized either on UB's campus or in your
hometown. Imagine that you are the person who will oversee this project, and that you are
using Walter Hood's 'triad of investigations' as your approach to the project. What would
your landscape intervention commemorate/memorialize? How will you use Hood's 'triad of
investigations' to design a new landscape intervention? What do you imagine that the
design will be? (Either written or visual descriptions are acceptable).
In my opinion I would like to memorialize about the UB student association , It is one of the
coolest thing on campus ,hosting different events working on it is of the hardest thing ,
According to me building a strong alumni relation is one if the most important thing to do after
graduation , which student association are solely responsible , according to me as an alumini we
should have a "ring " as an alumini which school gives each and every graduate and something
they can have for life . Secondly a wall just for alumini describing their journey and time in UB
some of them are really inspirational this will not only keep the school up to its standards , it
involves lot more future kids join school take up the programms offered get jobs . Well the
alumini have gone through the whole thing they exactly know what they went through , done and
dusted away !!!!
Week 7
Thread 1: Response to the Brookes
The abolitionist poster, the Brookes, is an iconic image that often is included in exhibits that
explore issues of race and power. It was commissioned by Thomas Clarkson in 1788, and
the Committee of the Abolition of Slavery used it to inform and shock the public. While
some consider the poster as an important component of the abolitionist campaign, it
recently “has been strongly criticized by some individuals and groups of African heritage
as providing a very limited view of the history of the transatlantic slave trade, resistance
and abolition (Hudson 2007).” The lesson here is that how a viewer sees an image is
dependent upon his/her social, economic, and cultural position. Keeping this in mind, find
another iconic graphic that addresses racial issues and post it for others in your group to
view. (Add it to your response by clicking on the picture in the tools section. Do not add it
as an attachment that needs to be opened.) How do you interpret the graphic? What is its
meaning? Now imagine that someone from a racial and cultural background different
than your own is looking at the same graphic. Briefly describe this person. How might s/he
interpret its meaning? How might this differ from your interpretation? What are the
possible reasons for these differences? (Consider the three assessment principles mentioned
in the article to help you: a technology of vision, an instrument of empathy, and a symbol of
control.) (NOTE: Limit your response to less than 250 words.)
These pictures talks about the demographics groups and changes in the society , in the past
whites have always over powered the blacks based on there color , there is always a
discrimination , if a Black person looks at this graphic then his interpretation would be way
more different. First thing would be that he/she would feel bad that even though they are not
responsible for committing any crime but still they are held responsible for it. If a black
man/woman is watching this picture, he/she will glad that they are treat equal. It is because black
man/woman is the race that always get treats unfair.
Being brown according to me color doesn't matter a lot ? we should be proud about who we are
and what we in life every human is important and should be considered equally. Black lives
matter at the end of the day
Thread 2: Response to Charles Davis and equityXdesign's Work
Critique either the MLK Memorial or the National Museum of African American History
and Culture using equityXdesign’s core beliefs and/or design principles. (Use the beliefs or
principles that are most relevant to your critique rather than all of them.) (NOTE: Limit
your response to less than 250 words.)
National Museum of African American History and
Culture is an exceptional example of
equityXdesign. Martin king Jr was one of the most
influential civil rights leaders. He practiced non violence
and his words were very moving. remember the reading
mentioning that the corona is made out of copper, which is
something the Africans mastered a long time ago. The
MLK Memorial was designed with direct intention to preserve the history of an active black civil
rights leader, with many historical prompts behind the design decisions made.I feel sad when I
see the african american being toutured by white americans getting there existance as human was
a biggest challenge
Week 8
Thread 1: Response to "Landscape Stories" ChapterThread 1
This is a two-part question. Please post your own response by Friday, March 31at 10:00
am, and respond to at least two other students’ responses by Sunday, April 2 at 10:00 pm.
First, let’s start with your own home. Describe a place in your home (indoors and/or
outdoors) that you think of as representative of your own ethnic background and discuss
why you consider this place to be ‘ethnic’. –OR-- Describe an object in your home that you
think of as representative of your ethnic background and discuss why this object is
considered to be ‘ethnic’. (If possible, add photo/s.) Is this object or place something that
you will keep or continue when you establish your own home? Why or why not?
Now let’s move into your community. In “Landscape Stories,” the authors show how
landscape architects develop a historical narrative that sifts through and interpets the
culture and material of underrepresented groups. Think about the community where you
grew up. Describe and discuss any evidence of cultural influences on the physical
environment in your community. If possible, describe evidence of the cultural influence of
an underrepresented group. (If possible, add photo/s.) Is this cultural influence being
acknowledged or preserved from future generations? Why or why not? (Limit your
response to 250 words.)
Honestly coming from a normal family in india , where everyone believes in god no matter for
good or bad , visit temples , Because religion is in veins of country. Imagine India without any
religion, no Hindustani or Carnatic music ,no beautifultemples no different dance formats , no
culture at all. This no only increases the belief in god but also attracts tourists from all around the
world to explore the place
My community / family has a temple of its own in this place called RISHIKESH , a sacred place
in india surrounded by the holy river ganga .It serves a lot of people on a daily basis , on the
auspicious days there are different deast done in the temple where monks are called and food is
served to them . Festivals in india also remark some god during its celebrations
Thread 2: Response to Article on Sports Branding
This thread will focus on the ethnic characteristics of sports branding. Please post your
own response by Friday, March 31at 10:00 am, and respond to at least two other students’
responses by Sunday, April 2 at 10:00 pm.
I believe this is a controversial topic , where there is no one side to pick out , sport branding
designers could use ethnic references , for instance Boston Celtics is very populated by Irish and
it also represented the whole community when the play for the games. For other teams like
Fighting Irish and Atlanta Braves , according to me both their their own defined goals and other
implications present at the moment . In most American dictionaries today the term redskin
is being defined as a derogatory slang its an issue on national level. People have different
perspectives and different interpretations on what is positive and negative.I think ethnic
references should be allowed to use based on how comfortable is the person !
Week 9
Thread 1: Response to "Visualizing Gender" Chapter
Please post your own response by Friday, April 7 at 10:00 am, and respond to at least one
other student’s response by Sunday, April 9 at 10:00 pm.
In their chapter “Communicating Gender,” Maya Ganesh and Gabi Sobliye discuss two
primary visual advocacy approaches: 1) get the idea, and 2) stories in data. Find a new
example of either of the two visual advocacy approaches to gender issues, and post it in this
thread. Cite the source.
First, identify the approach. Then explain how the designer uses the approach to
communicate a gender issue. Is the approach effective in this example? Why or why not?
How could this graphic be improved? (Limit your response to 200 words.)
This topic I choose ,when I was research about it , I was shocked to see the statistics and the
results behind it , womens are getting less paid than men even today , this is shocking ! no matter
they have the same education background ,according to the study done there is a difference of
20% in their wages they work equally hard and still not treated eaqually probably something no
one will expect . In marketing women empowerment on the advertisement. When consumers are
seen as such influential people promoting a specific brand; not only does it make them increase
their confidence it creates gender empowerment and awareness. The approach is effective but i
believe in due time it'll fade away and the brand will try to replace these individuals until a new
method of promoting their brand with gender empowerment comes around because we live in a
time frame where whatever is bigger is better .There fore the gender equality should always be
there to create awareness and the rights
Thread 2: Response to
Last year, North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory signed into law a bill that repealed local
LGBT anti-discrimination laws, and required people to use the bathroom that
corresponded with the biological gender written on their birth certificates. This prompted
massive backlash. McCrory stated, “You know, we all have to make adjustments in life.
And we’ve had the proper etiquette situation for decades in our country, and all of a
sudden through political correctness we’re throwing away basic etiquette.” Just this past
Thursday, the North Carolina General Assembly passed a bill to repeal the law while
placing a moratorium on nondiscrimination measures.
Should people be required to use the bathroom that corresponds with the biological gender
written on their birth certificate? State why AND state why not. In other words, to receive
full credit for this question, you need to present an argument for both sides of the issue. As
a designer, how would you solve this gender dilemma? Use the SEE-IT method to respond

I think people should be required to use the bathroom that corresponds with the biological
gender written on their birth certificate because of safety and security. Bathrooms are the private
facility also its can be the typical area where the rape and criminals happened so keep this from
occurring people should go to bathroom corresponding to their biological gender. Also
allowing trans gender people to use the bathroom of their choice could violate the privacy of
other people while using the same bathroom. We live in a time where a lot of people choose to
become LGBT's and as the society becomes more diverse we have to accommodate peoples
differences. Not only does it make the LGBT individual feel unaccepted and awkward in such a
situation it is also a form of discrimination against LGBT community. This discrimination is
closely related to the discrimination that happened towards people in the past such as African
Americans.
I agree with this law because I feel that people should use the bathrooms that
go with their original gender. There are certain safety precautions that I
believe this laws protects the people of the LGBT community from. People
of all ages, sizes and ethnicities use bathrooms and they should be able to
feel safe while doing so. Hence a choice of bathroom should be given to them

Thread 1: Response to Hidden Ways
Author Steven Flusty categorized five types of disciplinary architecture that perpetuate
what he calls urban spatial injustice: 1) stealthy, 2) slippery, 3) crusty, 4) prickly, and 5)
jittery. Go out into the city of Buffalo, and find/photograph two examples from the list of
five. Identify what type of space you’ve photographed and why it might discriminate
against a specific population. Identify the location where you took the photograph, and
make certain that you are in at least one of the two photographs.
this picture talks about the ice condition and how hard it is to drive this is on the free way near
UB , black ice is very dangerous and is one of the main causes of the road accidents
This is in my back yard after a snow storm . I think this a violation of crusty because the snow
can go inside the building. The floor will be slippery when the snow is melting. For me, it is not
a big problem.
Thread 2: Response to People Like Us
After almost two decades of public assistance, Tammy Crabtree took herself and her family
off the welfare rolls. But her job cleaning bathrooms at a local Burger King barely paid the
bills. Crabtree wanted to do better and hopes to go to college and become a teacher.
Imagine this scenario. You are a designer who works at the well-known firm, iPD
(Integrated Planning and Design). You work on a team with planners, urban designers,
policy designers, architects, and social designers. You have been tasked to develop/design a
way for Tammy Crabtree and her family (and others with situations similar to Tammy’s)
to move themselves out of poverty. What will your team to do to help Tammy and her
family achieve their goals? What approach will your team take to address this difficult
problem?
There are many people who suffer from poverty. The task or deign I am thinking might be costly
for the government but it's in the favor of these people. The should give them loan not in terms
of money but in terms of the job. Like, in this case, Crabtree wanted to do better and hopes to go
to college and become a teacher there are many governments colleges and high school(public)
they should see whether she is capable enough and if so first preference should be given to them.
Second thing if their kids want to study then they should give them jobs and at the same time
their fees are being paid. Transportation is yet another problem. Public transport should be made
cheaper.
Anyway there is only one way to move oneself out of poverty and that is to obtain a skill and
then find a way to monetize that skill. I believe that high school children are at a very vulnerable
position because they are at a critical age. They can have a child (thus creating a major financial
and physical burden), can drop out of high school, and have to make decisions affecting them for
the rest of their life. I believe that high schools need an arsenal of resources to set students up for
success.

Thread 1: Response to Carroll Article: “(Re)forming Regent Park: When Policy Does Not
Equal Practice”
The development of is phased, and there are several more phases to the project. What
actions could be taken to ensure more social integration for the older people living in the
‘new and improved’ Regent Park?
According to me regent park , are on the right way but surely missing the execution in the plan
, the planning of the residence is very important because they are the ones who will be living
there, who can bring up habitual problems that professional designers may not recognize. I think
that the community itself should be more integrated, especially in terms of a disability-friendly
living space. I think that interactions between the old and the young are beneficial to the
development of a community setting. think there should be an easy transportation service which
would be convenient for them for going from place to place. Mainly during evenings, people like
to sit and talk. The residence should be according to their needs and likes. Their apartments
should be built in such a way that they can get and find everything easily and appearance should
be according to their taste. Safety should also be kept in mind as over here we are dealing with
the old elderly people .
Thread 2: Response to Enriquez TED Talk: “What Will Humans Look Like in 100
Years?”
For this question, we will focus on Juan Enriquez’ Life Two civilization, which alters
fundamental aspects of the body. We are living longer than ever before in human history.
Enriquez argues that, because of advances in bio-medical technology, the possibility of
living to 120 years of age and beyond is quite possible for many of us in this D+D class.
Assuming that his assertion is accurate, how do you think extended life spans will change
our societies and built environments? What new issues might designers face because of
extended life spans?
The
most
significant effect of extended life span of human beings would be the rapid growth in population.
The rapid growth in population will effect every aspect of human beings and a large part of
which will have to be faced by the designers. The overall design of cities and countries will have
to be rebuilt to accommodate this change. The concept of individual houses and villas will have
have to be replaced by apartments so that more people could be accommodated in smaller pieces
of land. Also, the consumption of food, fossil fuels, water and basic necessities would grow due
to an increase in population. More ways to get more fossil fuels will have to be built. The traffic
in cities will rise rapidly and the designers will have to find alternatives to help people commute
from one place to another. There would be rise in usage of public transports by people to avoid
traffic. So public transportation system will also need to be redesigned. Such examples of design
can be taken from the countries which are already facing these issues such as China and India,
which are the two largest populated countries in the world
Week 12
Thread 1: Response to PPT, Smithsonian, and Roy
The two most frequently mentioned models of disability are the ‘social’ and the ‘medical’
models. The medical model of disability views disability as a medical ‘problem’ that
belongs to the disabled individual. The social model of disability, in contrast, draws on the
idea that it is society that disables people, through designing everything to meet the needs
of the majority of people who are not disabled. There is a recognition within the social
model that there is a great deal that society can do to reduce, and ultimately remove, some
of these disabling barriers, and that this task is the responsibility of society, rather than the
disabled person.
I grew up in two different countries , where everything is different , in terms of living , space and
even washroom , the first picture is used sqatting toilet , (indian style ) people normally use this
one in india and its scientifically proven the best
the second one is the western toilets which are more widely accepeted around the world at the
moment Many mobility issues revolve around an impairment in the mobility of the hips or legs,
which can cause great discomfort or inability to bend down to sit on the toilet seat, however,
with the grab bar, the elderly/disabled will be able to have support from their upper body to help
them onto the toilet safely without risk of injury. While simple and effective, the grab bar can be
improved by having a cushion on it as it generally comes as a metal bar which can also add on to
the hazards of possible things to injure someone in the case and is safer to use than indian style
there is always this balacing act involved in the indian stlye
Thread 2: Response to Survey, FIXED, and Stelarc
Our 2017 Design-A-Baby survey yielded the following characteristics as indicated by a
majority of you:
Sex: Male (47%)
Hair Color: Dark Brown (22%)
Hair Texture: Wavy (33%)
Eye Color: Blue (26%)
Race: Caucasian (36%)
Height: 5’-10” to 6’-1” (45%)
IQ: 131-140 (20%)
Memory: Excellent (43%)
Athletic Ability: Excellent (43%)
Weight: Average (79%)
Disease Carrier: None (85%)
Beauty: Somewhat attractive (46%)
Empathy: Very empathetic (38%)
Creativity: Very creative (37%)
Sounds like an all-around lovely person!
Currently, we have the technology for you to choose many of the survey characteristics in
your future child, and this ability to choose poses some ethical questions. Of course, we all
want the best for our own child. However, as we move into a more collective situation, we
need to consider how the consequences of majority choices for children might change who
we are as a species.
In the film trailer FIXED, you were introduced to the dilemma of living in a culture in
which the “science-fiction of human enhancement” has become almost a way of life, from
prenatal genetic screening to bionic body parts. In the video, “A Man with Three Ears” you
are introduced to an artist who is using current technology to move humans beyond their
current abilities. Last week, Juan Enriquez asked us if it is ethical to evolve the human
body. All of these videos suggest that the concept of disability ‘as we know it’ could cease to
exist in the future.
This leads us to this week’s discussion question:
What lessons do you think we should learn from history when thinking about emerging
enhancement technologies and reproductive technologies? What are some of the possible
consequences (both positive and negative) of being able to design our bodies and the bodies
of our children? What ethical quandaries do these technologies pose?
Throughout history there have always been some kind of way to replace a lost arm or leg or body
part. Thinking back to the stereotypical pirate with a peg leg and a hook for a hand, that was still
a prosthetic albeit a very crude version of one, but it performed a similar purpose as many
modern prosthetic do now, it furthered the abilities of the human being by adding a trait that
wasn't available to humans in the first place (the hook is sharp and can latch/pierce things to
grab, unlike hands). I feel like we should learn from history and always think of new ways to
expand upon the limits of what prosthetics can do in order to advance human ability. The
disadvantages are that humans are made by God. No matter how advanced we become but there
are side effects for this artificial organ which later on affects human. I feel that sometimes
technology has a negative effect, for example, people do sonography and check whether they
have a baby girl or boy.Diversity is very essential in our society. It is controversial for
technology to redefine the human beings and their children are created. Nature will always
surpass technology in any aspect of life.
Week 13
The state of Massachusetts tried to ban the 1967 documentary Titicut Follies, arguing that
director Frederick Wiseman had violated the patients’ rights by not getting written permission to
film them. The case went to court, and Wiseman argued that he had consent from their legal
guardian, the institution. After a judge ruled in favor of the state, the legal appeals carried on for
several years: in 1969, Massachusetts allowed the film to be shown to doctors, lawyers, and
health care professionals; in 1991, a superior court judge ruled it could be released for the
“general public,” as privacy concerns were no longer at issue, so many years later.
Should Wiseman have been allowed to film the residents of Bridgewater Massachusetts
Correctional Facility? Why or why not? How might this film be of value to designers
(communication designers, product, designers, architects, interior designers, planners,
landscape designers, systems designers, and/or social designers)? In other words, what
might they gain from this film that they could use in their work?
I completely understand how the court ruled the case, and that them being filmed without written
consent is a violation of privacy, the Bridgewater Massachusetts Correctional Facility violated
way more of the patients' basic human rights. . After watching the reviews that summarized the
whole film, I changed my mind because the way the institute treated their criminally insane
patients was so inhumane and violent, that it had to be spread out to the world and raised people's
attentions to change it to be better place for them. If the guardians don't mind making a film on
them then I think they should be allowed to do so without harming the patients. The mental
patients are not in the state wherein they can give permission by themselves. Those people may
help the residents to have a better living condition.

Prelude: Wolf Wolfensberger's seminal work "The Origin and Nature of Our Institutional
Models" posited that society characterizes people with intellectual disabilities as sub-human and
burdens of charity, He argued that this dehumanization, and the segregated institutions that result
from it, ignored the potential productive contributions that all people can make to society. He
pushed for a shift in policy and practice that recognized the human needs of those with
intellectual challenges and provided the same basic human rights as for the rest of the population.
The Scenario: Imagine that you and your four children live in Amherst, New York in a
$650,000 home at the end of a cul-de-sac on the edge of a ten acre woods. The town has
purchased a one acre lot three houses away from yours, and plans to build a group home for ten
intellectually challenged adults.
As a resident of the neighborhood, would you support or oppose this proposal and why?
You've learned additional information about the residents of the proposed group home in your
neighborhood. In 2013, three of the ten intended residents exhibited challenging behaviors
including screaming, public masturbation, repetitive rocking, and echolalia (elective
incontinence). However, these behaviors have not occurred since then.
How would this change your opinion about the construction of the group home in your
neighborhood?
The residents in your neighborhood voted (14-3) to reject the town of Amherst’s proposal to
build a group home in the neighborhood. Town officials agreed that the home would not be built
in your neighborhood if you and your neighbors could develop a workable alternative.
What are some possible solutions that would allow the residents of the home to be provided
with “the same basic human rights as the rest of the population”?
As a resident of the neighborhood,i will strongly oppose the building home group for ten
intellectually challenged adults near my home. At first, we can't ensure our safety of our kids.
Even though that 10 adults don't have the bad behaviors occur since 2013 but there are lots of
potential problems.Specially the public masturbation behavior will harm the development of my
kids if that adult do that again. These behaviors haven't occurred since the incidents in 2013, but
there could still be events that trigger those reactions which could potentially leave my children
with night terrors due to being scared to death. One possible solution is to create a sort of
isolated world for them to roam around . People with mental health problems should be put in
places where they can't harm anyone and no one can harm them.
Week 14
In his article, David Engwicht discusses the fact that religions (of all types) have played major
roles in the development of our cities. Today, places of worship are primary components of
almost all urban centers. Author Lorne Daniel writes “From their often active role in supporting
people who live in city centers to their iconic influence on design and use of space, religious
structures tell us a lot about our history, our current needs, and where we might be headed in the
future. This is an aspect of our urban future that planners and urbanists should attend to.”
Identify a place of worship with which you are somewhat familiar. (If you are not familiar
with any places of worship, do a bit of research on one in your own city or town.) Show a
photograph of this religious structure. (You may use photographs from the web.) What
roles has this place served in the development of your city/town? How has it influenced the
design of the area around it? How has its role changed over time? What roles could this
place of worship play in the future development of your city/town?
Golden Temple,is the holiest Gurdwara of Sikhism, located in the city of Amritsar, Punjab,
India. Amritsarwas founded in 1577 by the fourth Sikh guru, Guru Ram Das. The construction of
Harmandir Sahib was intended to build a place of worship for men and women from all walks of
life and all religions to come and worship God equally. Accordingly, as a gesture of this non-
sectarian universalness of Sikhism, Guru Arjan had specially invited
Muslim Sufi saint, Hazrat Mian Mir to lay the foundation stone of the Harmandir Sahib. Over
100,000 people visit the holy shrine daily for worship, and also partake jointly in the free
community kitchen and meal regardless of any distinctions, a tradition that is a hallmark of all
Sikh Gurdwaras and covered the upper floors of the gurdwara with 750kg of gold

Think about your own major and/or future profession. What is the biggest challenge,
problem, or question that your field needs to tackle right now? What do you plan to do to
address this challenge, problem, or question either as part of your studies or professional
life?
I am currently a computer science major , the problem i face day to day , the new trend in the
market you need to constantly be updated with the latest technology .Secondly finding some
work experience before graduating in order to secure a full time job , GPA helps you
in academics but not in the professional background .As a computer science programmer, while
programming I always comment out my program for someone else to understand , helps to
avoid mistakes and miscommunication and getting the job done fast

  • 2. My major is computer science .The journey for me in this course has been absolutely delightful where I got to learn so much ,My perception about gender , race and communites around us drastically changed .Designing a community around probably is the most complicated thing .In this class we tried to understand the fairness and how reasonable is the designing around , where we need to break the original stereotypes .Secondly what I understood was the religion how people around are discriminated , Its important to protect our roots and be proud of who we are not someone what others want us to be .I understand this as designing a community depends on us to live up a healthy lifestyle , live, work and play Week1 introduction
  • 3. This thread provides you with an opportunity to "meet" each other and initiate a connection with participants in your group. In responding to this discussion thread, please introduce yourself and provide us with one interesting fact about yourself. After posting your introduction, take a look through and reply to some of the others. The purpose of this exercise is to develop a sense of community. You might find that you share similar experiences and can help each other in many ways throughout the semester. My name is suyash I am computer science major ,I am a junior exploring out new possibilities and innovating new thing has always been my passion .I was born and raised in India but soon couple of years later my parents immigrated to seattle wa.Currently I have my own start up called Sensihub (you can email me for more details ) Buffalo is a fun place to live in ,my experiemce here has been great except the snow where you can do a lot of fun things .I love hiking , playing squash and a great harry potter fan ,i am really excited about this course will help me look into the diverse background which will be helpful in my professional growth
  • 4. Thread 2: Response to "What is design?" from Hello World On “What is design?” from Hello World: Where Design Meets Life by Alice Rawsthron The author opened her chapter with the example of Ying Zheng, the ruler of the Qin empire, one of the most powerful and enduring empires I the history of China. She explained how design innovation contributed to Ying Zheng’s success. For example, in the development of weaponry, he resolved many problems by standardizing parts, and this single innovation gave his armies great advantage over other armies. For this discussion, let’s move away from 246 B.C. China, and into the U.S. Describe an innovation or invention (can be current or historical) that gave advantage to a group of people in the U.S. or to the population as a whole. What were the social impacts of this
  • 5. innovation? Were any groups negatively impacted by this innovation? For example, the telegraph, developed and patented in the United States in 1837 by Samuel Morse, permitted people and commerce to transmit messages across both continents and oceans almost instantly, with widespread social and economic impacts. This heightened communication speed allowed business persons to make decisions with up-to-date information, often resulting in big profits. Those without access had to rely on out-dated information, which put them at a disadvantage. I am going to discuss about the INTERNET .This is one of the most essential thing in life and we cannot imagine life without it internet is the global system of interconnected computer networks. It is a network of networks that consists of private, public, academic, business, and government networks of local to global scope, linked by a broad array of electronic, wireless, and optical networking technologies .A lot big business are dependent on internet such as AMAZON.COM ,this industry is challenging creates employment for the people around . As far as the negative outcome of this feature this service can be expensive (more money you give you get faster Internet ) ,weather conditions play a huge role in the Internet services at times the service goes down due to rain or storms . Its hard in this 21st century to imagine life without Internet , it makes things easier and work is done is an efficient way . A certain section of crowd disagree with the same they believe Internet makes mankind lazy, they dont work hard for it ! Thread 3: Response to "Introduction" from Diversity and Design
  • 6. On “Introduction” from Diversity and Design: Understanding Hidden Consequences The editors state that “diverse participation in the design process, from both professionals and public citizens alike, yields more equitable results.” This makes sense, but typically has not been the case. Nonetheless, many marginalized groups have impacted design in ways that have changed our visual and physical worlds as well as our systems, policies, and institutions. For example, in the 1960s, disability rights advocates designed media events to raise awareness about barriers in the physical environment. They persisted with their efforts for decades, and, finally, in 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act became law. It mandated accessibility in public accommodations such as restaurants and stores, public transportation, communication, and other areas of public life. This dramatically changed our physical environment (from curb cuts to ramps to automatic doors) and the results made public life more equitable. Now it’s your turn. Describe a design that was impacted by a diversity group. How and why did it change form and/or circumstances? (Note that a design can be anything requiring planning and development prior to the production of an action, system, visual, material object, or environment. Also, keep in mind that, for our purposes, a diversity group is a group of individuals who are underrepresented in society in some way—children, older adults, the economically disadvantaged, those with cognitive disabilities, etc.)
  • 7. America is a progressive nation where everyone is welcome , each and every person in different sections in the society is taken care of.They specially make building to accommodate everyone .people with all sorts of disabilities such as ramp walk at the same place instead of stairs ,in elevators the numbers are also written in braille script (read by blind people) .These people I say have a very tough life and face a lot of challenges in life ,but they like to be independent and way more motivated than the person who abled . Last summer I had done my summer intership with an NGO name mitra jyothi in bangalore they are working for people with disability in general and visually impaired,my job was to manage out entries in accounts department and at times .A junior computer instructor in one of the classes teaching programming with the help of JAWS .They are motivated to learn and hunger to capture the world can be seen . The invention of this symbol and special privileges for disabled people began after Disabilities Act of 1990, it is compulsory to accommodate everyone it protects the nation and no one can be discriminated if they deserve to be the part of it, some famous building which come with the best disability accommodation as far as i have seen Seattle space needle Week 2 Response to Media/Society Chapter and TED Talk on Photographs
  • 8. Thread 1: FROM: Chapter in Media/Society and TED Talk Photos that Changed the World Where would you place the images shown in Photos That Changed the World into Croteau and Hoynes' diagram entitled “Model of Media and the Social World”? Identify a mass media photograph taken in your own lifetime that has served as an icon of an event. (Feel free to add an attachment.) What roles does this photo play in the communication of the event? I really like the way of describing thing or narrating things through pictures ,these picture come under the category of "mass and media product ".These pictures always try to express themselves or try to send out a message which normally articles cannot do , Some of the images were about the disaster such as civil war, dead people stacked together, Another image about earthquake a natural disaster. These are some dreadful scenerios and its very unlikely if we are suffered in the same normally innocents are the one who get affected the most from these situations . The photo i have used as my example for this situation is from terrorist attack in akshardham temple in gujarat india , a bunch of terrorist came in and started open firing and hijacked a temple a holy place where people pray where number of innocents were killed and some were made as hostages ,it is one of the darkest nights in the Indian history ,Indian rescue team were always on there toes it took them 72 hours to find and kill all the possible terrorist and stop all their activities ,at times these soldiers are the unsung heroes who are doing their duty but at the end it much more than that . this is surely a true example of bravery by these soldiers Response to Articles on Hats as Communication Design
  • 9. Thread 2: FROM: “Fashioning Protest for the Women’s March on Washington” and “The Worst Design of 2016 Was Also the Most Effective” NOTE: Use the first three part of the SEE-IT method of critical thinking (State, Elaborate, Exemplify) to address the following questions: Typically, we do not think of hats as elements of mass media or social media. However, the two hats (red and pink) discussed in the articles certainly have taken on that role. Why the two hats (red and pink) are mentioned in the articles vehicles of communication design? What meanings do each of the two hats carry? In terms of communication design, how are they similar? And how are they different from one another? This topic is debatable ,discussion in the two articles talk about recent presidential elections, I still remember when president Donald j trump was elected as president probably one of the darkest days in the American history ,the red hat in this article typically represents presidents campaign "MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN ", this was his election manifesto ,well the targeted audience were just the working Americans trying to get back ,but he had no plan how to do and what to do .Where as Hillary was more appreciated to be the next president she was sensible and realistic .I still don't believe the fact why people choose him ? what made them do so in terms of choices in life ,now since he is elected there is always a terror of fear what will happen next ,I truly feel he is a symbol to hate and incite violence . The hat categorized its wearers as Trump supporters, Middle Americans who were tired of elitists. A designated hat simply shows a support for their leader by the particular group at first . Where as the pink hat
  • 10. was designed against trump ,womens marching on the road ,"people of all sex trying to get there acceptance " ,people trying hard as they need insurance basically opposite of a trump supporter In terms of communication setting up voice in the society think both are equal , targeting different section of the crowd , the red hat are the one where the president promised to give the jobs , not to hire foreign workers ,immigration ban etc where as pink hat is more towards success in terms of long term goal where everyone is welcome if you have the urge to do the things right eg google hires 75 % people from all over the world such a diverse culture ,just trying to make a differ Week 3 Thread 1: Response to “Industrial Design” by John Heskett and "The Incredible Inventions of Intuitive AI" by Maurice Conti
  • 11. In his chapter on industrial design (written in 1987), historian John Heskett claims that the methods of mass production introduced by Henry Ford in the U.S. involved new concepts of the standardization and integration of the production line that were adopted across the world. With Ford’s method, relatively unskilled workers could complete work; it was more efficient and with this method, products were made more quickly and cheaply than previously possible. What were some of the social consequences of Ford’s production line? In other words, how did this system change our U.S. society? Do any of those changes remain with us today? Now consider Maurice Conti’s TED Talk, and the predictions he makes about production. How do you think manufacturing processes will change in the next twenty years? How do you think these changes will affect our U.S. society? This article talks about how initially the products were hand made before that era was completely different where everything was more customize , the quality quantity and size varied even it was made by the same person over there it came with the human touch , but the things looks like its changing now the introduction of conveyor belt and Ford's production line where most of the production is automated through big machinery Then the mass production was enabled, and people got less jobs to do as there job were getting killed , a good example of this is amazon go store and amazon robotics , In the go store its completely human free store where everything works on the artificial intelligence and algorithmic based , where you just walk in and walk you and you are all set ,In the amazon robotics this is more used in the amazon warehouse where robots pick up stuff as per customer orders and allocates in different areas there machine can pick up upto 700lbs way more than humans can pick up. Well this is probably not the best this but one of the most efficient ways mankind is fighting from this complicated life around it ,most of the sectors if robots are replaced , like they should
  • 12. be way to dependable another example over here is the self driven cars by Google this is all done by artificial intelligence and deep learning algorithm but depending completely on this is way too much of a risk as its a matter of life and death , In the test runs no matter car responded pretty well no matter with unusual traffic or someone suddenly crossing the road. These jobs replacing human not even killing someones living but spoiling the community relatio Thread 2: Response IDEA Awards and Cradle-to-Cradle Video NOTE: Use the first three part of the SEE-IT method of critical thinking (State, Elaborate, Exemplify) to address the following questions: Which of the 2016 IDEA Gold Award products seems to defy the Cradle-to-Cradle concept developed by architect William McDonough and chemist Dr. Michael Braungart? How does this product resist or disregard the concept? Do you know of any products that embrace Cradle-to-Cradle design? If so, please describe. The Light bulb concept from the 2016 IDEA Gold Awards seems the most to defy the Cradle-to- Cradle concept.Light bulbs are among those everyday household and workplace products that seem so inconsequential yet are vital for commerce and leisure. They are easy to replace and relatively cheap to buy.Another reason is their short lifespan is that another newer and better model comes out so people usually buy the newer device, some of the parts can be reused, redesigning for recyclability .Converting bulbs to leds , working on the design
  • 13. integration and the hardware unit of the bulb. The approach of our project should be flexible enough to withstand other future lighting technologies coming along. Although the LED is the important bit, it's as much about the system .Some companies have started to integrate these light bulbs with the smart home feature such as google home where you can switch off the light with phone through the internet , just to save the resources and use them well i consider this to be a cradle to cradle till the time people are disposing there old bulbs correctly . This is the because the cleaning products now are mostly safe for the environment and they come in is recyclable Week 4 Thread 1: Response to All Module 4 Materials Your readings and viewings this week present different ways of thinking about architecture. Mies Van der Rohe describes architecture as “The will of the epoch translated into space.” Andrew Ballantyne describes architecture as the background for life. Jeanne Gang describes it as the act of building relationships. All agree that architecture can change based on context and culture. Choose two works of architecture from any of your
  • 14. materials this week—one with sensibilities about the past and one with sensibilities about the present and/or future. How do each of these buildings either reflect or challenge their cultural contexts? (Use the SEE-IT method to respond to this question.) I am going to talk about the high rise with fenky architecture with true meaning behind it that jeanne gang said and second dallas airport moving lounges The Wainwright building set the standard for modern skyscrapers, unique with it's thin metal frame to keep it standing tall. where people can gather around the fireplace to share their ideas and gathering around there. In nowadays,we are so emphasize the idea of sharing idea and protect environment around us . The building wall is made of chords and its good for the planet because the tree can absorb carbon hence they were designed and eco friendly . The skyscraper was created at a time when the Industrial Revolution just started companies put their venture capital on these building to grow them and scale new heights . The Dulles Airport was a great innovation made for the new form of transportation, jet aircraft. The Dulles Airport was a great innovation made for the new form of transportation, jet aircraft. for examplae dallas airport have huge concourses which take them around the plane there are different sign boards which tell them approximation time they will take to travel, this was a matter of attention specially for the old traveller mobile lounge were developed just like where you board that took people to their planes from the actual airport itself. This is no longer needed because the planes are parked at the walkway to the plane and it's much faster to get around inside the airport nowadays. Thread 2: Response to Ballantyne and Zumthor Articles
  • 15. Andrew Ballantyne and Peter Zumthor present ideas about architecture that seem to value the sensorial and material elements of life. How are Ballantyne’s and Zumthor’s viewpoints on architecture alike? More importantly, how do they differ? (Use the SEE-IT method to respond to this question.) Ballantyne and Zumthor are similar in that they both have found a deeper meaning to architecture how the mutual understanding i developed between people on their daily day to day living ,they recall every specific detail about the building . Ballantyne discusses humans having a relationship with their buildings. Zumthor explains his aunt's house in painstaking detail, explaining several nooks and crannies of the house. According to their perspectives buildings are not just some type of art but also interactive materials that can be more than concrete with specific habits or sensations built in. Ballantyne is way more careful towards architecture and believes that architecture should be selfproclaimed what you feel is the best while Zumthor takes the more logical approach to architecture and designs based on what is reasonable. His belief towards architecture reflects the architecture as resistance to strong message, that "speaks its own language." He argues that, in a society that is "irrrelivant", architecture makes its own stand and can "speak" its own language. Week 5
  • 16. Thread 1: Response to Levy Article Here is your discussion question on the Levy article. Please post your own response, and respond to at least two other students' responses. John Levy’s article, “An Overview: The Need for Planning,” discussed ways in which planning can determine the characteristics of a place. For example, some smaller towns restrict the heights of buildings to maintain a certain scale. How did planning define the character of the place in which you grew up? Before I read Levy's article, Planning is one of the most important thing and is practiced by all the individual around , planning a city can be a challenging job , specially where i was born Bangalore the silicon valley of india. The city has deep history in it self as it was under a king rule , attracts lot of tourists from all over the world , as a technological hub the city is growing every year a lot of big firm such as yahoo , google etc have their base in the city . Building skyscrapers will interrupt the view from those ancient buildings. Recently, the planner in my hometown start to allow people to build high building in areas where are far away from the historical site.Planning is efficiently done. for its in Bangalore being the silicon valley is know for it intreconnection of roads, cleanliness, food, entertainment parks, business, environmentally friendly, shopping malls, intercity transportation , storehouses, warehouses, . They make development plans and try to finish up with the estimation date. These projects are designed they can be afforded to all the sections in the society such rich , middle and poor . Building should be constructed as per city regulations , and compliance in bangalore no high rises are allowed as its prone to earth quakes they prefer a low rise they prefer a low rise bulding there
  • 17. Thread 2: Response to Pruitt Igoe Project, Talen, and Larson Here is your discussion question on the Pruitt Igoe project, the Talen article, and the Larson lecture. article. Please post your own response, and respond to at least two other students' responses. Imagine that you are part of a urban planning and design firm working with Emily Talen (author of “Design That Enables Diversity”) and Kent Larson (who gave the TED Talk "Brilliant Designs to Fit More People In Every City" The thee of you have been tasked with developing a plan to rebuild Pruitt Igoe in St. Louis. City officials told the three of you that that they want to do it right this time. Identify three strategies for rebuilding Pruitt Igoe in ways that promise to be more successful. What would Talen do? What would Larson do? What would you do? How would your strategies differ from those of the original urban planners/designers of the project? Why would your strategies be more effective? Pruitt Igoe's architects did not consider diversity as a dominant feature for their design which would need attention in the long run, and due to this Pruitt- Igoe turned out to be a failure. If given a chance to rebuild Pruitt Igoe, Talen would construct it in a way, such that, he could make it more diverse by attracting people of different income and not just for the low-income. He could do it in a way by attracting more business so that employment rate increases and so does the minimum wage which in turn will make people with various income living in the same society. On the other hand, Larson would try to use technology as a tool to build smarter homes and societies that could
  • 18. accommodate more people in the lesser amount of area. Also, he would use the technology to make a more efficient style of living which would attract more people. Given a chance to rebuild Pruitt Igoe, the key feature to consider would be to keep the area diverse. Diversity is the key to bringing various kinds of people living together under one roof and bringing diversity into the society. The second most important thing would be providing education, basic necessities to all the people by constructing Schools, Hospitals, convenience stores and other such things in the nearby area for the people living near them. Also, one of the most important thing to keep in mind is to provide employment opportunities to the people which eventually would result in a decrease in crime rate and make it safer for the people living in that area. Eventually, I would try to make the houses efficient and use the technology Week 6 Thread 1: Response to F.L. Olmsted Displaying his plan at the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, Frederick Law Olmsted stated that "Buffalo is the best planned city, as to its streets, public places, and grounds, in the United States, if not in the world." What was the basis for this claim? Would Olmsted still make that claim today? Why or why not? On the basis of the claim I think buffalo is one of the best planned cities so far I have ever seen , where different parks are present livestock is preserved and mantaining one of the world heritage site "Niagara Falls ", the niagara fall still attract millions of visitor every year. Some
  • 19. people would think it is one of the most beautiful place they have ever seen. Parks in Buffalo is not that outstanding anymore. You can find the the urban park system allover the world. There are parks that are bigger and more beautiful. And among those urban parks the Olmsted park in Buffalo was the most beautifully planned one harmonizing greatly with the surrounding landscapes and rural regions. Olmsted can still make this claim today about Buffalo. His first Landscape Architectural success. I have not been to many other places in the United States but the Video I have seen of Olmsted and I can look Buffalo in the present day it feels the same Thread 2: Response to Walter Hood's Work Identify something that should be memorialized either on UB's campus or in your hometown. Imagine that you are the person who will oversee this project, and that you are using Walter Hood's 'triad of investigations' as your approach to the project. What would your landscape intervention commemorate/memorialize? How will you use Hood's 'triad of investigations' to design a new landscape intervention? What do you imagine that the design will be? (Either written or visual descriptions are acceptable).
  • 20. In my opinion I would like to memorialize about the UB student association , It is one of the coolest thing on campus ,hosting different events working on it is of the hardest thing , According to me building a strong alumni relation is one if the most important thing to do after graduation , which student association are solely responsible , according to me as an alumini we should have a "ring " as an alumini which school gives each and every graduate and something they can have for life . Secondly a wall just for alumini describing their journey and time in UB some of them are really inspirational this will not only keep the school up to its standards , it involves lot more future kids join school take up the programms offered get jobs . Well the alumini have gone through the whole thing they exactly know what they went through , done and dusted away !!!! Week 7 Thread 1: Response to the Brookes The abolitionist poster, the Brookes, is an iconic image that often is included in exhibits that explore issues of race and power. It was commissioned by Thomas Clarkson in 1788, and the Committee of the Abolition of Slavery used it to inform and shock the public. While some consider the poster as an important component of the abolitionist campaign, it
  • 21. recently “has been strongly criticized by some individuals and groups of African heritage as providing a very limited view of the history of the transatlantic slave trade, resistance and abolition (Hudson 2007).” The lesson here is that how a viewer sees an image is dependent upon his/her social, economic, and cultural position. Keeping this in mind, find another iconic graphic that addresses racial issues and post it for others in your group to view. (Add it to your response by clicking on the picture in the tools section. Do not add it as an attachment that needs to be opened.) How do you interpret the graphic? What is its meaning? Now imagine that someone from a racial and cultural background different than your own is looking at the same graphic. Briefly describe this person. How might s/he interpret its meaning? How might this differ from your interpretation? What are the possible reasons for these differences? (Consider the three assessment principles mentioned in the article to help you: a technology of vision, an instrument of empathy, and a symbol of control.) (NOTE: Limit your response to less than 250 words.) These pictures talks about the demographics groups and changes in the society , in the past whites have always over powered the blacks based on there color , there is always a discrimination , if a Black person looks at this graphic then his interpretation would be way more different. First thing would be that he/she would feel bad that even though they are not responsible for committing any crime but still they are held responsible for it. If a black man/woman is watching this picture, he/she will glad that they are treat equal. It is because black man/woman is the race that always get treats unfair. Being brown according to me color doesn't matter a lot ? we should be proud about who we are and what we in life every human is important and should be considered equally. Black lives matter at the end of the day

(Use the beliefs or principles that are most relevant to your critique rather than all of them.) (NOTE: Limit your response to less than 250 words.) National Museum of African American History and Culture is an exceptional example of equityXdesign. Martin king Jr was one of the most influential civil rights leaders. He practiced non violence and his words were very moving. remember the reading mentioning that the corona is made out of copper, which is something the Africans mastered a long time ago. The MLK Memorial was designed with direct intention to preserve the history of an active black civil rights leader, with many historical prompts behind the design decisions made.I feel sad when I

Please post your own response by Friday, March 31at 10:00 am, and respond to at least two other students’ responses by Sunday, April 2 at 10:00 pm. First, let’s start with your own home. Describe a place in your home (indoors and/or outdoors) that you think of as representative of your own ethnic background and discuss why you consider this place to be ‘ethnic’. –OR-- Describe an object in your home that you think of as representative of your ethnic background and discuss why this object is considered to be ‘ethnic’. (If possible, add photo/s.) Is this object or place something that you will keep or continue when you establish your own home? Why or why not? Now let’s move into your community. In “Landscape Stories,” the authors show how landscape architects develop a historical narrative that sifts through and interpets the culture and material of underrepresented groups. • 25. Thread 2: Response to Article on Sports Branding This thread will focus on the ethnic characteristics of sports branding. Please post your own response by Friday, March 31at 10:00 am, and respond to at least two other students’ responses by Sunday, April 2 at 10:00 pm. I believe this is a controversial topic , where there is no one side to pick out , sport branding designers could use ethnic references , for instance Boston Celtics is very populated by Irish and it also represented the whole community when the play for the games. For other teams like Fighting Irish and Atlanta Braves , according to me both their their own defined goals and other implications present at the moment . In most American dictionaries today the term redskin is being defined as a derogatory slang its an issue on national level. People have different perspectives and different interpretations on what is positive and negative.I think ethnic references should be allowed to use based on how comfortable is the person ! Week 9 Thread 1: Response to "Visualizing Gender" Chapter Please post your own response by Friday, April 7 at 10:00 am, and respond to at least one other student’s response by Sunday, April 9 at 10:00 pm.
  • 26. In their chapter “Communicating Gender,” Maya Ganesh and Gabi Sobliye discuss two primary visual advocacy approaches: 1) get the idea, and 2) stories in data. Find a new example of either of the two visual advocacy approaches to gender issues, and post it in this thread. Cite the source. First, identify the approach. Then explain how the designer uses the approach to communicate a gender issue. Is the approach effective in this example? Why or why not? How could this graphic be improved? (Limit your response to 200 words.) This topic I choose ,when I was research about it , I was shocked to see the statistics and the results behind it , womens are getting less paid than men even today , this is shocking ! no matter they have the same education background ,according to the study done there is a difference of 20% in their wages they work equally hard and still not treated eaqually probably something no one will expect . In marketing women empowerment on the advertisement. When consumers are seen as such influential people promoting a specific brand; not only does it make them increase their confidence it creates gender empowerment and awareness. The approach is effective but i believe in due time it'll fade away and the brand will try to replace these individuals until a new method of promoting their brand with gender empowerment comes around because we live in a time frame where whatever is bigger is better .There fore the gender equality should always be there to create awareness and the rights Thread 2: Response to Last year, North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory signed into law a bill that repealed local LGBT anti-discrimination laws, and required people to use the bathroom that
  • 27. corresponded with the biological gender written on their birth certificates. This prompted massive backlash. McCrory stated, “You know, we all have to make adjustments in life. And we’ve had the proper etiquette situation for decades in our country, and all of a sudden through political correctness we’re throwing away basic etiquette.” Just this past Thursday, the North Carolina General Assembly passed a bill to repeal the law while placing a moratorium on nondiscrimination measures. Should people be required to use the bathroom that corresponds with the biological gender written on their birth certificate? State why AND state why not. In other words, to receive full credit for this question, you need to present an argument for both sides of the issue. As a designer, how would you solve this gender dilemma? Use the SEE-IT method to respond to this question. (Limit your response to less than 250 words.) I think people should be required to use the bathroom that corresponds with the biological gender written on their birth certificate because of safety and security. Bathrooms are the private facility also its can be the typical area where the rape and criminals happened so keep this from occurring people should go to bathroom corresponding to their biological gender. Also allowing trans gender people to use the bathroom of their choice could violate the privacy of other people while using the same bathroom. We live in a time where a lot of people choose to become LGBT's and as the society becomes more diverse we have to accommodate peoples differences. Not only does it make the LGBT individual feel unaccepted and awkward in such a situation it is also a form of discrimination against LGBT community. This discrimination is closely related to the discrimination that happened towards people in the past such as African Americans.
  • 28. I agree with this law because I feel that people should use the bathrooms that go with their original gender. There are certain safety precautions that I believe this laws protects the people of the LGBT community from. People of all ages, sizes and ethnicities use bathrooms and they should be able to feel safe while doing so. Hence a choice of bathroom should be given to them Week 10 Thread 1: Response to Hidden Ways Author Steven Flusty categorized five types of disciplinary architecture that perpetuate what he calls urban spatial injustice: 1) stealthy, 2) slippery, 3) crusty, 4) prickly, and 5) jittery. Go out into the city of Buffalo, and find/photograph two examples from the list of five. Identify what type of space you’ve photographed and why it might discriminate against a specific population. Identify the location where you took the photograph, and make certain that you are in at least one of the two photographs. this picture talks about the ice condition and how hard it is to drive this is on the free way near UB , black ice is very dangerous and is one of the main causes of the road accidents This is in my back yard after a snow storm . I think this a violation of crusty because the snow can go inside the building. The floor will be slippery when the snow is melting. For me, it is not a big problem.
  • 29. Thread 2: Response to People Like Us After almost two decades of public assistance, Tammy Crabtree took herself and her family off the welfare rolls. But her job cleaning bathrooms at a local Burger King barely paid the bills. Crabtree wanted to do better and hopes to go to college and become a teacher. Imagine this scenario. You are a designer who works at the well-known firm, iPD (Integrated Planning and Design). You work on a team with planners, urban designers, policy designers, architects, and social designers. You have been tasked to develop/design a way for Tammy Crabtree and her family (and others with situations similar to Tammy’s) to move themselves out of poverty. What will your team to do to help Tammy and her family achieve their goals? What approach will your team take to address this difficult problem?
  • 30. There are many people who suffer from poverty. The task or deign I am thinking might be costly for the government but it's in the favor of these people. The should give them loan not in terms of money but in terms of the job. Like, in this case, Crabtree wanted to do better and hopes to go to college and become a teacher there are many governments colleges and high school(public) they should see whether she is capable enough and if so first preference should be given to them. Second thing if their kids want to study then they should give them jobs and at the same time their fees are being paid. Transportation is yet another problem. Public transport should be made cheaper. Anyway there is only one way to move oneself out of poverty and that is to obtain a skill and then find a way to monetize that skill. I believe that high school children are at a very vulnerable position because they are at a critical age. They can have a child (thus creating a major financial and physical burden), can drop out of high school, and have to make decisions affecting them for the rest of their life. I believe that high schools need an arsenal of resources to set students up for success. Week 11 Thread 1: Response to Carroll Article: “(Re)forming Regent Park: When Policy Does Not Equal Practice” The development of is phased, and there are several more phases to the project. What actions could be taken to ensure more social integration for the older people living in the ‘new and improved’ Regent Park?
  • 31. According to me regent park , are on the right way but surely missing the execution in the plan , the planning of the residence is very important because they are the ones who will be living there, who can bring up habitual problems that professional designers may not recognize. I think that the community itself should be more integrated, especially in terms of a disability-friendly living space. I think that interactions between the old and the young are beneficial to the development of a community setting. think there should be an easy transportation service which would be convenient for them for going from place to place. Mainly during evenings, people like to sit and talk. The residence should be according to their needs and likes. Their apartments should be built in such a way that they can get and find everything easily and appearance should be according to their taste. Safety should also be kept in mind as over here we are dealing with the old elderly people .
  • 32. Thread 2: Response to Enriquez TED Talk: “What Will Humans Look Like in 100 Years?” For this question, we will focus on Juan Enriquez’ Life Two civilization, which alters fundamental aspects of the body. We are living longer than ever before in human history. Enriquez argues that, because of advances in bio-medical technology, the possibility of living to 120 years of age and beyond is quite possible for many of us in this D+D class. Assuming that his assertion is accurate, how do you think extended life spans will change our societies and built environments? What new issues might designers face because of extended life spans? The most significant effect of extended life span of human beings would be the rapid growth in population. The rapid growth in population will effect every aspect of human beings and a large part of which will have to be faced by the designers. The overall design of cities and countries will have
  • 33. to be rebuilt to accommodate this change. The concept of individual houses and villas will have have to be replaced by apartments so that more people could be accommodated in smaller pieces of land. Also, the consumption of food, fossil fuels, water and basic necessities would grow due to an increase in population. More ways to get more fossil fuels will have to be built. The traffic in cities will rise rapidly and the designers will have to find alternatives to help people commute from one place to another. There would be rise in usage of public transports by people to avoid traffic. So public transportation system will also need to be redesigned. Such examples of design can be taken from the countries which are already facing these issues such as China and India, which are the two largest populated countries in the world Week 12 Thread 1: Response to PPT, Smithsonian, and Roy The two most frequently mentioned models of disability are the ‘social’ and the ‘medical’ models. The medical model of disability views disability as a medical ‘problem’ that belongs to the disabled individual. The social model of disability, in contrast, draws on the idea that it is society that disables people, through designing everything to meet the needs of the majority of people who are not disabled. There is a recognition within the social model that there is a great deal that society can do to reduce, and ultimately remove, some of these disabling barriers, and that this task is the responsibility of society, rather than the disabled person.
  • 34. I grew up in two different countries , where everything is different , in terms of living , space and even washroom , the first picture is used sqatting toilet , (indian style ) people normally use this one in india and its scientifically proven the best the second one is the western toilets which are more widely accepeted around the world at the moment Many mobility issues revolve around an impairment in the mobility of the hips or legs, which can cause great discomfort or inability to bend down to sit on the toilet seat, however, with the grab bar, the elderly/disabled will be able to have support from their upper body to help them onto the toilet safely without risk of injury. While simple and effective, the grab bar can be improved by having a cushion on it as it generally comes as a metal bar which can also add on to the hazards of possible things to injure someone in the case and is safer to use than indian style there is always this balacing act involved in the indian stlye Thread 2: Response to Survey, FIXED, and Stelarc Our 2017 Design-A-Baby survey yielded the following characteristics as indicated by a majority of you: Sex: Male (47%) Hair Color: Dark Brown (22%) Hair Texture: Wavy (33%)
  • 35. Eye Color: Blue (26%) Race: Caucasian (36%) Height: 5’-10” to 6’-1” (45%) IQ: 131-140 (20%) Memory: Excellent (43%) Athletic Ability: Excellent (43%) Weight: Average (79%) Disease Carrier: None (85%) Beauty: Somewhat attractive (46%) Empathy: Very empathetic (38%) Creativity: Very creative (37%) Sounds like an all-around lovely person! Currently, we have the technology for you to choose many of the survey characteristics in your future child, and this ability to choose poses some ethical questions. Of course, we all want the best for our own child. However, as we move into a more collective situation, we need to consider how the consequences of majority choices for children might change who we are as a species. In the film trailer FIXED, you were introduced to the dilemma of living in a culture in which the “science-fiction of human enhancement” has become almost a way of life, from prenatal genetic screening to bionic body parts. In the video, “A Man with Three Ears” you
  • 36. are introduced to an artist who is using current technology to move humans beyond their current abilities. Last week, Juan Enriquez asked us if it is ethical to evolve the human body. All of these videos suggest that the concept of disability ‘as we know it’ could cease to exist in the future. This leads us to this week’s discussion question: What lessons do you think we should learn from history when thinking about emerging enhancement technologies and reproductive technologies? What are some of the possible consequences (both positive and negative) of being able to design our bodies and the bodies of our children? What ethical quandaries do these technologies pose? Throughout history there have always been some kind of way to replace a lost arm or leg or body part. Thinking back to the stereotypical pirate with a peg leg and a hook for a hand, that was still a prosthetic albeit a very crude version of one, but it performed a similar purpose as many modern prosthetic do now, it furthered the abilities of the human being by adding a trait that wasn't available to humans in the first place (the hook is sharp and can latch/pierce things to grab, unlike hands). I feel like we should learn from history and always think of new ways to expand upon the limits of what prosthetics can do in order to advance human ability. The disadvantages are that humans are made by God. No matter how advanced we become but there are side effects for this artificial organ which later on affects human. I feel that sometimes technology has a negative effect, for example, people do sonography and check whether they have a baby girl or boy.Diversity is very essential in our society. It is controversial for
  • 37. technology to redefine the human beings and their children are created. Nature will always surpass technology in any aspect of life. Week 13 The state of Massachusetts tried to ban the 1967 documentary Titicut Follies, arguing that director Frederick Wiseman had violated the patients’ rights by not getting written permission to film them. The case went to court, and Wiseman argued that he had consent from their legal guardian, the institution. After a judge ruled in favor of the state, the legal appeals carried on for several years: in 1969, Massachusetts allowed the film to be shown to doctors, lawyers, and health care professionals; in 1991, a superior court judge ruled it could be released for the “general public,” as privacy concerns were no longer at issue, so many years later. Should Wiseman have been allowed to film the residents of Bridgewater Massachusetts Correctional Facility? Why or why not? How might this film be of value to designers (communication designers, product, designers, architects, interior designers, planners, landscape designers, systems designers, and/or social designers)? In other words, what might they gain from this film that they could use in their work? I completely understand how the court ruled the case, and that them being filmed without written consent is a violation of privacy, the Bridgewater Massachusetts Correctional Facility violated
  • 38. way more of the patients' basic human rights. . After watching the reviews that summarized the whole film, I changed my mind because the way the institute treated their criminally insane patients was so inhumane and violent, that it had to be spread out to the world and raised people's attentions to change it to be better place for them. If the guardians don't mind making a film on them then I think they should be allowed to do so without harming the patients. The mental patients are not in the state wherein they can give permission by themselves. Those people may help the residents to have a better living condition. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bridgewater,_Massachusetts Prelude: Wolf Wolfensberger's seminal work "The Origin and Nature of Our Institutional Models" posited that society characterizes people with intellectual disabilities as sub-human and burdens of charity, He argued that this dehumanization, and the segregated institutions that result from it, ignored the potential productive contributions that all people can make to society. He pushed for a shift in policy and practice that recognized the human needs of those with intellectual challenges and provided the same basic human rights as for the rest of the population. The Scenario: Imagine that you and your four children live in Amherst, New York in a $650,000 home at the end of a cul-de-sac on the edge of a ten acre woods. The town has
  • 39. purchased a one acre lot three houses away from yours, and plans to build a group home for ten intellectually challenged adults. As a resident of the neighborhood, would you support or oppose this proposal and why? You've learned additional information about the residents of the proposed group home in your neighborhood. In 2013, three of the ten intended residents exhibited challenging behaviors including screaming, public masturbation, repetitive rocking, and echolalia (elective incontinence). However, these behaviors have not occurred since then. How would this change your opinion about the construction of the group home in your neighborhood? The residents in your neighborhood voted (14-3) to reject the town of Amherst’s proposal to build a group home in the neighborhood. Town officials agreed that the home would not be built in your neighborhood if you and your neighbors could develop a workable alternative. What are some possible solutions that would allow the residents of the home to be provided with “the same basic human rights as the rest of the population”? As a resident of the neighborhood,i will strongly oppose the building home group for ten intellectually challenged adults near my home. At first, we can't ensure our safety of our kids. Even though that 10 adults don't have the bad behaviors occur since 2013 but there are lots of potential problems.Specially the public masturbation behavior will harm the development of my kids if that adult do that again. These behaviors haven't occurred since the incidents in 2013, but

One possible solution is to create a sort of isolated world for them to roam around . People with mental health problems should be put in places where they can't harm anyone and no one can harm them. Week 14 In his article, David Engwicht discusses the fact that religions (of all types) have played major roles in the development of our cities. Today, places of worship are primary components of almost all urban centers. Author Lorne Daniel writes “From their often active role in supporting people who live in city centers to their iconic influence on design and use of space, religious structures tell us a lot about our history, our current needs, and where we might be headed in the future. This is an aspect of our urban future that planners and urbanists should attend to.” Identify a place of worship with which you are somewhat familiar. (If you are not familiar with any places of worship, do a bit of research on one in your own city or town.) Show a photograph of this religious structure. (You may use photographs from the web.) What roles has this place served in the development of your city/town? How has it influenced the design of the area around it? How has its role changed over time? What roles could this place of worship play in the future development of your city/town? Golden Temple,is the holiest Gurdwara of Sikhism, located in the city of Amritsar, Punjab, India.
