Smart meters

  1. 1. 1 Presented by: MOHAMMAD KARISHMA (1604-14-734-005)
  2. 2. Traditional meter Smart meter  No data storage. A  A meter reader physically comes to your home to record information.  Electricity use can only be tracked by either waiting for your quarterly bill or manually reading your household meter yourself.  No outage detection.  Must be done manually.  Stores electricity consumed every half an hour.  Data is automatically transmitted to the metering company.  Digital data of energy consumption and time of use can be provided  Automated outage detection  Connections and disconnections are faster 2
  3. 3. 3
  4. 4. The benefits associated with the Smart Grid include:  More efficient transmission of electricity.  Quicker restoration of electricity after power disturbances.  Reduced operations and management costs for utilities, and ultimately lower power costs for consumers.  Reduced peak demand, which will also help lower electricity rates  Increased integration of large-scale renewable energy systems.  Improved security 4
  5. 5.  A Smart meter is a clever new electricity meter that automatically sends meter readings to central system.  That means , no more estimated bills and a much better chance of saving money on your energy. 5
  6. 6.  Smart meters provide the Smart Grid interface between you and your energy provider. Installed in place of your old, mechanical meter, these meters operate digitally, and allow for automated and complex transfers of information between your home and your energy provider. For instance, smart meters will deliver signals from your energy provider that can help you cut your energy costs. 6
  7. 7.  A Smart meter records the energy we use and sends it to metering company and to a handheld Smart energy display in your home. Put your Smart energy display somewhere where you can keep an eye on it and it’ll give you an idea of what you’re paying for your energy and help you see where you could save money. SMART ENERGY DISPLAY 7
  8. 8. On an in-home display, you’ll be able to read:  how much energy you’re using in near real time  how much energy was used in the last hour, week, and month (and what it costs)  whether your electricity use is high, medium or low  updates in near real time for electricity. 8
  9. 9. 9
  10. 10.  Advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) is an integrated system of smart meters, communications networks, and data management systems that enables two-way communication between utilities and customers. 10
  11. 11.  AMI will improve three key features of India’s grid system including : ◦ system reliability ◦ Energy costs ◦ Electricity theft 11
  12. 12.  Eliminates manual monthly meter readings  Monitors the electric system much more quickly  Makes it possible to use power resources more efficiently  In control of your energy costs  Accurate bills, with no more meter readings  Reduces the number of blackouts  it enables consumers to directly review their electricity usage . 12
  13. 13.  An initial increase in the budget.  Storage of vast quantities of consumer data 13
