Chatting with instant message
Are you ready to chat? On Skype, instant messaging (also known as IM) lets you send short messages to your contacts so you can chat back and forth in real time.
IM is a great alternative to regular Skype calls—and even email—if you want to ask someone a quick question or simply have a relaxed conversation without picking up the phone.
3. The contact's information will open in a pane on the right.
4. Click the Video call button.
To IM someone on Skype:
Open the Skype window and sign in.
Click the person you want to IM on the Contacts tab.
The contact's information will open in a pane on the right.
Type a message inside the conversation box.
Click the Send button when you're done, or press Enter on your keyboard.
The contact's information will open in a pane on the right.
Type a message inside the conversation box.
Click the Send button when you're done, or press Enter on your keyboard.
The other person will receive the message, and may reply if online. If that contact is offline, he or she will receive the message after signing in.
The area above the conversation box will show your history.
You can also IM someone during a call. This can be useful if you want to send a phone number, link, or anything else you would normally write down. All you have to do is click the Show IM button in the call window and type your message.
One-on-one video calls on Skype are free, which means you can chat using your webcam whenever you want. Groupvideo calls (with up to 10 people at a time) cost money, but they're a great way to bring friends, family, and business contacts together. Go to Skype Premium at Skype.com to learn more about the cost of group video calls.
So what do you see when someone IMs you on Skype? Sometimes a pop-up, but more often a notification on your computer's taskbar. It may look something like this:
To view or reply to the IM, open your Skype window. Then go to the Recent tab, or click the person who sent you the IM on the Contacts tab. Both areas will be marked to let you know that you have a message waiting. The same thing happens if you receive an IM while you're offline.
To send a group IM:
Open the Skype window and sign in.
Click the Create a group button above the Recent tab.
Add people to your group using one of these methods:
Drag and drop people from the Contacts tab on the left to the empty contact box on the right.
Click the + button and choose Add people. This will let you to choose your contacts manually from a list.
When you're ready, type a message inside the conversation box. Then click the Send button, or press Enter on your keyboard.
The other people will receive the message, and may reply if they're online.
The area above the conversation box will show your history.
The call window will appear. It will ring until the first person answers.
The others will answer, or will be dropped from the call if they're offline.
Talk as long as you like. Click the End call button when you're ready to hang up.
Adding people to a chat that's already in progress is another way to make a group IM. Just click the Add people button in the same pane.
You can also save the group to your contacts so you can easily call it again. All you have to do is click Save group in Contacts in the group pane.
