• Although definitions are subjective, arguably around 12/20 pertain in some
way to scholarship.
• Interesting, given that normally Teaching Fellows have only 20% (4/20) of
their time allocated to scholarly activity!

• Publishing own scholarly activity that attracts national recognition;
• 4 papers published (all collaborative) and 1 in press.
• Leading a research group;
• Established a team to develop the FOCUS corpus which now has a broad
dissemination.
• Championing academic and professional networks and taking on leadership
roles in these networks;
• IELTS examiner (2006-2010); External Examiner; BAAL Corpus SIG; BAAL Vocab SIG;
SketchEngine e-advisory panel.
• Writing a review of a book for a professional journal;
• Book reviewer for BAAL news

  • 2. ∂ Promotion process: 8 to 9 • Through APC • Form to HoD by December • HoD sends form plus supporting statement to HR by Jan • HR request references • APC consider form by end of April and notify applicants Key points: • New form designed for Teaching Fellows in Nov 2013 • Grade 9 descriptors updated in Nov 2013
  • 3. ∂ Grade 9 descriptors (Teaching Staff) • 20 descriptors for grade 9 • Although definitions are subjective, arguably around 12/20 pertain in some way to scholarship. • Interesting, given that normally Teaching Fellows have only 20% (4/20) of their time allocated to scholarly activity!
  • 4. ∂ Scholarship descriptors 1 • Publishing own scholarly activity that attracts national recognition; • 4 papers published (all collaborative) and 1 in press. • Leading a research group; • Established a team to develop the FOCUS corpus which now has a broad dissemination. • Championing academic and professional networks and taking on leadership roles in these networks; • IELTS examiner (2006-2010); External Examiner; BAAL Corpus SIG; BAAL Vocab SIG; SketchEngine e-advisory panel. • Writing a review of a book for a professional journal; • Book reviewer for BAAL news
  • 5. ∂ Scholarship descriptors 2 • Reviewing a research article in own field for an academic journal; • Reviewed articles for OERJ • Delivering a paper for a conference or contributing to steering committee for international conferences; • Given around 14 papers at local, national and international conferences between 2010 and 2014 • Giving seminars on own field of studies; • Led Teacher Development seminar in department • Successfully submitting papers to academic journals; • 1 paper in an academic journal, and others in professional/pedagogic journals
  • 6. ∂ Scholarship descriptors 3 • Successfully applying for research funding for projects; • 2 HEA grants and 5 Enhancing Student Learning Experience grants (all collaborative) • Organising conferences; • Helped to organise BALEAP conference at Language Centre in 2007 • Successfully writing for publication; • 4 papers plus some reviews • Publishing pedagogic and professional scholarship related to own specialism, disseminating findings and being recognised by national scholars in own area. • 4 papers, 14 conference talks, promotion form references
