MOOCs Matter!

In 2016, a group of students will receive master’s degrees in
computer science from Georgia Institute of Technology. These
students will pay $7,000 for the degree – about one-sixth of the
traditional cost – and may never set foot on campus. Thanks to an
agreement between Georgia Tech, AT&T, and Udacity, a venture-
capital funded online education startup, students will learn
virtually via a “massive open online course,” or MOOC.

Why MOOCs?

It seems to me, at least with respect to MOOCs, that we have
skipped an important step. We’ve jumped right into the "chase"
without much of a discussion about what problems they could
help us to solve. We have skipped the big picture of where higher
ed is going and where we want to be in 10 or 20 years.

What can MOOCs do?

• Remove limitations posed by geographical/space constraints
• Leverage technology to transform how education is delivered
– Leverage the strengths of cloud-based model
– Leverage the strengths of sophisticated e-learning methodologies to develop skills
and promote “active learning”
• In the blended mode, MOOCs can flip a classroom and help
instructors to act more of a mentor
• By their mere massive and open nature, MOOCs have the
potential to promote
– Diversity
– Openness
– Interactivity
– Autonomy
empowering students as explorers and creators to follow
their passion in diverse directions

