MAJOR BUSINESS AND OPERATIONAL CHALLENGES
FACED BY SME
Major business and operational challenges that Small
and Medium Enterprises face...
4
Effective customer engagement
• SMEs generally find effective customer
acquisition, retention and engagement
relatively challenging than larger
enterprises primarily due to limited
availability of resources such as sufficient
workforce, technology and platforms
Enhanced operational efficiency
• Operational efficiency is the paramount to
run a successful business and SMEs
generally find it challenging to achieve
desired level of operational efficiency
• Concerns such as unavailability of trained
workforce, desired infrastructure and
technology restricts it.
Business
challenges of
SME
High capital requirement
• Need for higher capital investment is the
most prominent challenge that any SME
deals as they do not have the luxury of
surplus cash
• More that 60% of start-Ups shut down
due to low capital or narrow funding
• Creating a strong IT infrastructure is
challenging for SMEs as it could be very
capital intensive and require complex
implementation & management
• This is one of the obstacle for SMEs when
competing with large enterprises in their
domain
Strong business Infrastructure
Innovation at business and operations
• For innovation to happen, a lot of
elements need to come together beyond
just financial means. Enterprise needs the
right skills, the right tools and access to
the right data. SMEs generally are a bit
behind the large enterprises in those
aspects
Digital transformation could be the answer
to overcome these challenges….
5
Globally SMEs have started to realize that….
As per the survey that includes 1300 SMEs across 17 countries suggests:
92% Leaders among SMEs considers customer experience as
the primary driver for adoption of digital transformation
38%
Of overall companies surveyed said that employee
engagement is the biggest driver to adopt digitization
36%
39%
Of overall companies digital transformation would
primarily help them to increase awareness of their
products and services
Of overall companies surveyed consider new product or
service innovation as the biggest driver
Digital transformation could overcome major business
challenges and provide significant benefits such as improved
efficiency, customer experience, employee engagement etc.
to SMEs…..
6
But adoption of digital technologies is itself a big
challenge for SMEs….
A survey done by SAP suggests that including 1300 SMEs across 17 countries identifies that:
21%
Of all small and midsize enterprises (SMEs) surveyed cited
lack of budget as the biggest hurdle for digital
transformation
15% Of them have said lack of sophisticated and suitable
technologies is the biggest concern in going digital
Major challenges faced by SMEs in adoption of digital technologies
7
Security of
digital data
• If the company is looking for digital
transformation, then ensuring security of
data in digital channels becomes
paramount
• Unlike some of the large enterprises, SMEs
find it challenging to build the secure
digital ecosystem by themselves
Lack of trained
professionals
• SMEs need to adopt multiple types of
solutions such as connectivity,
collaboration, cloud and applications that
may require purchasing solutions from
different vendors
• Handling and managing multiple vendors
is a complex task for SMEs which impacts
their overall productivity and cost as well
Managing
multiple vendor
CAPEX
Required
• Although, in longer term, adoption of
digital technologies brings a lot of cost
efficiencies, it requires some capital
investment initially which is one of the
major concern for SMEs globally
• As per SAP, 21% of SMEs consider lack of
funds as the major barrier for digital
adoption
• If companies don’t have trained and
experienced IT professionals, the
technologies will be of little use
• SMEs generally face challenge in setting
up a dedicated and strong IT team
• Therefore, adoption of new technologies
is a challenge until they outsource it to
expert organizations
SMEs in emerging markets also look to transform digitally
8

and trends that would drive the digital shift for enterprises (specifically SMEs) in emerging markets are:
Collaboration &
Communications
Cloud and AppificationIP Connectivity &
Convergence
Mobility

CHOOSING THE RIGHT SERVICE/SOLUTION
PROVIDER FOR OFFICE-IN-A-BOX SOLUTION
25
Factors affecting SMEs decision making for integrated office
connectivity solutions
26
Pricing of the solution
• Pricing plays a major role in the
purchase decision making for Office-
in-a-box solution
• Flexible pricing models such as pay-
as-you-go are preferable amongst
SMEs

additional service features such as
In-office mobility, security,
document management etc.
Managed service capability
• SMEs generally don’t want to

Office-in-a-box
service purchase
decision
CAPEX involved
• The ICT spending
capabilities of SMEs also
affect the purchase decision
making
• Cost conscious customers
reluctant to spend for EPBX
or IP PBX would go for it
Requirement of integrated
solution
• The need for integrated voice,
data and storage solution affects
the purchasing decision for the
companies
• SMEs with the need for desk
phones, Internet and marketing
solutions would go for it
Choosing the right service provider
27
One-stop-shop for all ICT requirement : The service

provider
01
02
03
Service parameters
Service offering parameters that help businesses
choose right Office-in-a-box solution provider
04
Ease of deployment and managed service: the
integrated solution should be plug and play. The
service provider should take complete ownership of
service management and maintenance
Interoperability with existing capabilities: The service
should provide IP and analog interoperability so that the
companies can integrate the solution with their existing
capabilities such as analog phones (if they have)
Future readiness of the solution: The service
should be scalable and capable of integrating
new technologies and applications such as
analytics
