There are many conflicting theories as to why this place is
named so.
One theory suggests that the naming has got to do with the
elopement of Bhupinder Singh, the Maharaja of Patiala with
the daughter of the British viceroy. She was kidnapped
while taking a walk here.
Another theory suggests that such is not the case. In 1892
Bhupinder was only an year old. Probably because of his
colourful nature and many wives, he is mistaken by local
historians. The real culprit could be his father Rajinder
Singh instead.
However the undisputed fact remains that it‟s situated in an
Indian city where Mall road joins Ridge road on the west
side, just beside the Lala Lajpat Rai statue.
