In 2017, Technology was a lot like how Homer Simpson described alcohol: The cause of... and solution to... all of life's problems.
Tech took its lumps:
Election meddling
Hacks of billions of email addresses
Our first death of a driver of an autonomous vehicle
CES seems like tech is ready to tilt the scales back to SOLUTIONS; making the world a better place, one gadget at a time
And the numbers reflect this optimism, across the board:
2.5 million square feet of exhibit space (how big is that?); 13 square feet per person
184,000+ attendees — an increase of 7,000 from last year
58,000+ international attendees
150 countries represented

Bot or Not: Robots were once again all over the show this year -- we'll show you the ones that mattered most and Craig will have a special guest
Outsourced Decisions: Tech isn’t just replacing human activities outside our bodies, but our choices inside our minds
Will it Blend: What combinations of tech will strike gold? We’ll you.
FearTech: Fear is a potent motivator. Certainly the companies who make these products hope so.
Screens Screens: Tech is finally catching up to science fiction in this category: we'll show you screens that ARE the wall, can roll up into a tube and deliver sound without speakers.
Things We Love: Don’ really fit a trend, but awesomely great or awesomely terrible
This year we saw a continued explosion of robots throughout the halls of CES: if you can think of something a human being does now, robots are attempting to replicate it on the floor of CES.
While there are nearly innumerable types of robots out there, we’re going to once again focus on the category of companion robots: bots that are designed to build relationships with humans and keep them from being lonely.
Now, just like last year I can hear the disbelief and cynicism in your silence – but trust me: this is going to be massive.
And the reason why it’s going to be massive for marketers is that these silent assassins are going to build such close relationships with consumers that people will offload their decisions to them.
You’ve all spend 20 years and billions of dollars building 1:1 relationships with consumers and these guys are going to get in between you two.
The key for brands is to know how to bring these guys into the relationship and program to them – or your brand will be left out of the conversation.
In fact, I thought it would make sense to do a quick frame up of the evolution of these companion devices.
The first electronic devices that started talking to us with any regularity were GPS devices. Despite the fact that they often sent us the wrong way or kept repeating “RECALCULATING, RECALCULATING” it set us on a path of offloading part of our brains to them.
Fast forward to CES 2016 in which we saw a many types of “table top” robots like Jibo (JEE-bo) who, while stationary, could interact with people, take their picture on command, interact with basic IOT devices
Next came locomotion in the form of wheels under the device like with Kuri – who is functionally an Alexa tower that rides around on a Roomba. Same basic functionality, only now she moves around the house
This year we see much more articulated arms like on iPal, continuing the march towards anthropomorphizing these bots.
And finally we have Rosie from the Jetsons: isn’t that who we ultimately want to keep our homes, make our meals, fold our laundry and dish out a healthy dose of sass along the way?
Evolutionary biologists have discovered that the reason why dogs do that thing when they tilt their heads is because the ones who developed this trait were more commonly fed by humans because humans find the trait endearing and cute.
That’s clearly the playbook being run by the folks at Blue Frog who have this year brought us Buddy, the hugely monstrously eyed robot.
Again, the bot itself is mostly a combination of roomba and google home, but most of their investment money went into development of the eyes.
Please don’t look too long directly into Buddy’s eyes, he will haunt your dreams for a long time after…
Ava by Aeolus Robotics is clearly a step in the Rosie direction.
This bot is designed for domestic chores and given its sophisticated arms it can sweep, vacuum and even prepare basic food.
Ava can differentiate between different members of your family (including the dog) and can patrol your home like a security team.
Downside of Ava is that it isn’t going to come cheap – when asked for a price we were told Ava costs approximately what “a family trip overseas” will run you.
Sometimes we see tech manufacturers develop something they call a “reference product” which means they’re working on a specific piece of functionality and specialize there so the industry overall can benefit.
This guy made by ITRI is all about optical recognition and hand coordination.
In fact, he’s quite the catch for a social outing since his primary functions are playing scrabble and mixing cocktails.
Sony brought Aibo back to CES after a 12 year absence and BOY was it a hit.
[note to presenter: please go online and watch a couple of the videos of the Aibos playing with each other on the floor this year, it’s hard to capture how cute they are in words alone]
Aibo is a HUGE step forward across a number of dimensions: from a design perspective, Aibo was built with smooth curved surfaces to make it much more canine in shape and look. It has OLED lenses in its eyes so they can be MUCH more expressive and interactive.
It puts itself away when it needs a charge and you’ll never ever have to walk it or carry any extra plastic waste bags with you.

What’s a better shopping experience - than one based on your own DNA?? Everyone is doing some sort of new year diet – Whole30, Paleo, etc – but DNA Nudge will help you make better choices based on your individual and biological needs. The implications here are that we have been considering marketing to people’s behaviors; we should now consider people’s DNA/biometrics.
What is it? (1 sentence)
DnaNudge is a new service that guides you to make the best shopping choices based on your unique genetic makeup - “nudging” your everyday choices through your DNA. DnaNudge delivers completely personalized food product recommendations towards healthier choices, delivered via wearables or an app.
Why is it new / innovative? (quick fact)
If DNANudge can deliver on the company’s promise, it stands to fundamentally change how consumers approach diet and nutrition. Diets will be personalized to the consumer and recommendations will be actionable in-store—think of being able to scan a barcode to be able to determine “is this food right for me”?

“No single model can do all this autonomous market work, so we are actually doing multiple things here,” says Rizzoli. “What’s running here is a combination of different models that are trying to figure out who you are, where you are, what you’re doing, and then ultimately what products you’re using.”
Poly doesn’t have to use facial recognition to put a real name with each face, although that does make checkout much easier, says Rizzoli. His ideal (a model applied in some automated stores in China) would be for shoppers to register for the system, including a photo that the cameras could use to identify customers as they enter and leave the store in order to automatically charge their account. They would also check in to the store with an app
Up to 40 people at once.
Poly’s level of image and activity tracking goes beyond self-checkout. It can function as a store security system, an inventory tracker, and a way to make sure employees aren’t slacking off. Poly also generates heat maps to provide insights on how customers move about the store. And it collects information that could interest marketers—like what products people look at and/or pick up to examine, even if they don’t ultimately buy them.

Using computer vision technology, motion tracking and your phone's front-facing camera, Magik incentivizes kids to brush their teeth with an augmented reality gaming app.
The game, called Magik Mirror, requires your kid to fire up the selfie cam to start. While brushing their teeth, they fight an evil monster in the app, who is bent on spreading cavities across the land.
To kill the monster, they need to shoot bubbles at it. As the monster runs around the screen, the user also needs to move around and brush their toothbrush thoroughly inside their mouths to keep shooting.
Unlock worlds, just like any game
Need the special toothbrush
Kolibree says it will bundle its toothbrush with a phone holder to keep one hand free.
To prevent over brushing (which can cause gum damage at any age), the game can only be played up to three times a day. Parents will also be sent data each time their child plays, receiving information like the time of day their kids brush their teeth and the duration of brushing.
The Magik toothbrush is set to be available some time later this year for "under $30" apiece (cheaper than a cavity!); September

If there’s such a thing as a tradition for BOCES presentation, it’s including a TV and Laptop section. And if I’m being honest, we’ve struggled the last few years in particular to come up with examples that really pop.
This year we did NOT have that problem.
Excited to share this years crop of screens, screens (the magical fruit)
Things like “the wall” are why I got into this business in the first place.
It’s amazing. We’ve been talking for years about “how big can TV screens get”? And now, the conversation can be flipped.
There’s no more fitting your TV to your wall because the TV IS your wall. It’s not a TV on a wall, it’s a wall that IS a screen, pivoting the model.
You’ve heard of or even maybe tried “picture in picture” on your TV, this is TV in TV – in this image the entire lit up area is one giant screen with a “TV” inset inside the wall.
When you’re not watching conten the wall can appear to be just that – a wall. Wall paper, bricks, wherever your décor/taste takes you.
In addition, the type of screen this is is “micro LED”. Think of the holiday lights you may have around your house or on your christmas tree. Now imagine they’re just as bright but the width of a human hair.
And pack 25MM of them together, being able to light them all up individually and you’ve got the makings of The Wall.
For the last few years, peripheral company Razer has demoed a concept product that’s designed to move the industry forward.
This is the most high functional phone case you’ve ever seen.
This “laptop” is essentially a case that extends the functionality of your phone – you plug your phone into the “trackpad” and your phone controls the larger “laptop” around it.
Another model bender (like the Wall/TV) where phone computing power is rivalling that of laptops – now your phone can be the beating heart of your laptop.
Another model twister – this “TV” projects its sound THROUGH the screen.
The ”speaker” is mounted on the back of the unit, and the screen is used as an actuator for the sound to reverberate.
All done somehow without shaking the screen itself.
Magic!
Super high def screen that can be rolled up like a poster in a tube.
This is exactly like one of those old school projector screens you used to pull down, except in reverse and absolutely AWESOME.
