Optimizing Your Tendenci Site for SEO | SEO for CMS

  1. This webinar will go over the SEO that is automatically baked into Tendenci as well as how to add custom optimization and general SEO tips you can take away and apply to your own Tendenci site. This webinar is not going to go very in depth with SEO strategy help, but I will tell you that content and links are what weighs the most. If you consistently update your website, whether it’s through a blog or some other method, you will most likely rank better than your competitors. If your content is interesting and original then that’s even better because people might actually link to it. I will give you some basic SEO tips you can use when putting together content though.
  2. So Tendenci automatically comes with some SEO
  3. It is essentially baked into the code so you don’t have to worry about it, but there are ways to customize it which I’ll discuss later.
  4. The things that are automatically generated by Tendenci on the front end of your website include the meta data , alt tags and primary keywords
  5. So as mentioned the meta keywords, meta description and title tag are automatically generated based on the content of your page. I’m sure some of you don’t know what meta data is so let me explain it briefly. Let’s start with title tags. This is what you see on the top of your browser or tab when you’re on a specific web page. You also see the title tag in the search engines. Here is what the title tag looks in the code. The title tag effects the SEO more than the meta description or meta keywords tag so I think it’s important to put more thought into your title tags and make sure they have keywords. The meta description is seen in the search results and in the code but no where visible on the webpage. I don’t think they are that important to your SEO rankings as much as they used to be, but they are extremely important in gaining a user click-through from search engine result pages. For me, a lot of times when I conduct a Google search I click on results based on the title tag and meta description so you want to make sure they’re well written and captivating. There is also a meta keywords tag which really isn’t important, but some search engine like Bing still pay attention to this tag so it’s important to fill it out. The meta keywords tag is only seen in the code. So now I want to show you what text Tendenci uses when automating these tags. DEMONSTRATE **A canonical URL is a format that allows you to publicly specify your preferred version of a URL.
  6. Alt tags are also automatically generated on Tendenci based on what you save an image as. So this is why you need good file names for your images. If you don’t know what an alt tag is… it basically is alternative text to describe an image. It’s important to have alt text on images because search engine spider are deaf and blind and can’t see an image and know what it is. You have to tell them what it is. Let me show you how this works on our Texas Dog Walker’s website. DEMONSTRATE
  7. Last but not least are Primary Keywords. This is found in your site settings. It’s important to note that it’s not completely automated because you do have to set it up, but once you do it automates throughout the website. DEMONSTRATE
  8. There is also backend stuff that is automated in Tendenci such as the sitemap.xml, the robots.txt file and the redirects module.
  9. So here is what a sitemap.xml looks like. You won’t need to worry about editing this ever because it’s automatically generated. Everytime you add a new page to your site the sitemap.xml automatically updates itself. The purpose of a sitemap.xml is to help the search engine robots navigate and index your pages more efficiently. The sitemap.xml through Tendenci updates itself automatically every night.
  10. The robots.txt file is another back end thing you won’t have to worry about. Schipul should have already set this up for you before your website ever went live. The purpose of the robots.txt file is to tell search spiders which pages you don’t want them to visit and index. A lot of times we exclude admin only type pages so search engine spiders won’t index the data from these private pages.
  11. There is also a redirects module in Tendenci. This is used when you change the URL slug name of a page to redirect the previous named URL slug to go to the new name. This way you won’t have broken pages. So if you change schipul.com/about to schipul.com/about-web-marketing you would need to use the redirect module to redirect it to the newly named page.
  12. Now I want to talk about what you CAN control and customize in Tendenci
  13. A lot of what you can control was already mentioned because it is automatically generated for you, but you still have the option of going back and customizing it. So what you can customize includes you meta tags, title tags, categories, alt tags and your URL slug.
  14. You can go in and edit your meta data and title tags to include whatever you want. At the bottom of a page that allows you to edit its meta you will see an options button and if you hover over it “edit meta” comes up in the middle which you can click on an begin editing your title tag, meta description tag and meta keywords tag.
  15. Here is what the page looks like when click in to edit the meta. As mentioned, you won’t be able to edit the meta on all pages within the Tendenci CMS so that’s where the baked in SEO comes into play. For example, an “Events” page with a calendar will not let you edit the meta. However, you can edit the meta on page that has the information about an event. So let me show you on the Texas Dog Walkers Association website what I mean. Here were are on the events page and there is nowhere to click to edit the meta. BUT…if you click into an event you can edit the meta for a single event.
  16. I wanted to give you guys some important tips for optimization. I think this is probably the most useful part of this webinar. So there are some best practices to use when incorporating keywords into meta tags and page content. I recommend focusing on 1 to 3 keywords per page on your website. Each page on your site should have a clear focus. So lets go to our Dog Walking page. This page has a clear focus as defined by our H1 tag – DOG WALKING SERVICES. I think the first thing someone should do before implementing any keywords into the meta tags or content is to research what keyword phrases are the best to use. To do this go to Google’s free keyword tool….which I’d tell you the link but it’s kind of long so I usually just do a Google search for “Google keyword tool” and it’s the first choice after the paid ads. So now that we’re here we can either paste the URL of our page here and it will automatically generate related keyword or we can type in a few keywords we think the page is about. Our dog walking services page is targeting Houston pet owners in need of dog walking services. A good keyword to start with is “Houston dog walker”…okay so I put in 3 keyword phrases I think describe our page and Google has come back and shown me the search volume of various related phrases. So now we can pick a main keyword and put this into every single part of our meta data. You can pick two more additional keywords to accompany our main keyword. It’s also recommended that you try to squeeze your main keyword in somewhere in the first part of your content and again towards the end.
  17. Also with the main keyword phrases you choose you can incorporate them into other parts of your page content like your alt tags, heading tags and into anchor links.
  18. As mentioned you can incorporate your main keyword phrase into the alt tag of images. DEMONSTRATE
  19. And you can also add the keyword phrases into your heading tags using the WYSIWYG editor which stands for what you see is what you get. When keywords are in the H1, H2, H3 or any heading tag Google sees this as having more importance then the rest of the content on the page. You are ultimately telling Google what the page is about which helps your rankings. So for our Dog Walking Services page w e could have just titled the page “Services” which I see a lot, but that wouldn’t help us. Instead title it Dog Walking Services. Implement keywords whenever you can and when it makes sense. DEMONSTRATE. --- turn “Contact Our Houston Dog Walkers” into an H2 tag using WYSIWYG
  20. Also it’s good to cross link to other pages within your website. You can do this by adding links within your content and making the text of the link be your main keyword phrase. So for our Dog Walking page we can start off the content by saying “Our Houston Dog Walkers are happy…” instead of just saying we. Then we highlight our keyword phrase and link it to another related page on the website. So here I’m cross linking to our about page. One thing you don’t want to do is say, “CLICK HERE!” When you text into a link you are putting more emphasis on that text and Google will then think that “click here” is an important keyword phrase. So don’t do that.
  21. You can also add rich media to your website such as videos and photos. If you have a page with a video embedded it is recommended that you fill out all of the fields such as tags, categories, descriptions and the URL slug which can be set to whatever you want it to be.   22. Of course you can also optimize photo albums. If you click edit set you are editing the properties of the album. This allows you to add an optimized description and album name as well as tags. You can also edit photos individually and give each one a photo title, a caption and add tags to it. When you click into edit the photos you will see the option to set your licensing as well. We recommend the “Attribution” license because this requires people to link back to you and credit you. It’s a good way to build inbound links which is a big part of SEO. ***The other licenses include Sharealike which allows a person to use the image and make small edits to it. There is NoDerivs means they can’t alter the image in any way. And there is noncommercial which can’t be used by any businesses and the remaining 2 choices are just combinations of the others.
