• Tyson wants their own
employees to conduct meat
inspection first.
TYSON’S ARGUMENT
• This process would speed up their
factory line.
• The USDA will still inspect their meat.
• This will put the public health in great
danger.
• Tyson factory workers might miss
signs of diseases and contaminations
without proper training.
• Workers will be able to remove any
signs of contamination and diseases.
FOOD ADVOCATES CONCERNS
FOOD SAFETY ADVOCATES ARE
WORRIED.
MY POSITION
• There should be stricter
laws and regulations
when it comes to food
safety.
• Companies need to put in
more effort to protect
their consumers.
• Tyson workers shouldn’t
be allowed to check their
products.
• The more checks, the
better.

Notes de l'éditeur

  1. Today, I will be discussing the topic of ground beef safety. There has been a massive amount of ground beef recalls over the past few years that is leaving the public health in danger.
  2. Ground beef often gets recalled due to E. Coli contamination. The cows are kept in very crowded and unhygienic rooms in factories. Cows live in their own feces that come up to their knees. When one cow gets sick, other cows are bound to get sick as there are all closely packed together in a room.
  3. According to Huff Post, ground beef recalls are at an all-time high right now. In 2018, there has been over 13 million pounds of ground beef recall in 31 different instances. In addition to E. Coli there are also been contamination with Salmonella. As for this year, they were 27 beef recall instances and some of them are still active as of November 13, 2019. About 57 tons which is over 113,000 pounds of beef were recalled in April of 2019. In addition about 65,000 pounds of beef were recalled in October. In addition, according to Today, in May about 62,000 pounds of beef were recalled right ahead of Memorial Day weekend. This is the time when we consume a large amount of meat during barbeques. The recall was due to E. Coli contamination.
  4. According to Central for Disease Control and Prevention, foodborne illnesses is a critical public health problem in the United States. These foodborne illness are caused by Salmonella and E. coli bacteria which are two of the most common pathogens that contaminate the beef. 200,000 people are hospitalized and about 3,000 people die due to airborne disease annually.
  5. According to the New York Times, Stephanie Smith believed she had a stomach virus, but that took a deadly turn as her diarrhea became bloody and her kidneys shut down resulting in seizures. The doctors had no other choice but to put her in a coma for nine weeks. When she woke up, she was left paralyzed. Doctors were later able to figure out that she had foodborne illness that was caused by E. coli.
  6. Tyson Foods, Inc is an American corporation based in Springdale, Arkansas. It is the second largest processor and marketer of beef, chicken and pork. They export the largest percentage of beef out of the United States.
  7. According to NBC News, Tyson wants the Trump administration to reduce the number of government inspectors at their Kansas beef plant. Tyson wants to be able to have their own employees inspect before the Dependent of Agriculture inspectors do their check. This would allow the Tyson’s employees to look for unsuitable beef carcasses and the USDA would check for disease and contamination.
  8. Tyson believes this method would speed their factory line. It is said that the Department of Agriculture is considering this, however this proposal has consumers and food safety advocates concerned. They believe this could put public health in danger. USDA’s former chief veterinarian, Dr. Pat Basu is concerned that Tyson factory workers might miss signs of any diseases or contamination without proper training. If a Tyson factory worker misses any critical signs, then public health could be jeopardized. In addition to missing signs, if they remove evidence of any clues or traces then it could also put public health in danger.  If this method works, then it would benefit Tyson as it would speed up their factory line and might decrease beef contamination. On the other hand, if this fails then the public health would be at risk.
  9. There are already so much unknown and danger associated with the safety of ground beef. Do we really want the largest beef company exports to have fewer inspections or have their own employees check for contamination? Meat safety inspections should be conducted by those who have proper training and will do so unbiased. We do not need another Stephanie to become paralyzed by eating something she enjoys. According to the HuffPost, meat are tested for E. Coli after it is grounded and ready to be packed for sale. It is possible to not all the meat are checked for contamination and disease. Even we the checks we have now, it isn’t enough to reduce the contamination of ground beef. I know it is nearly impossible to make sure that ground beef contamination never happens again, but I know it is possible to reduce the number of beef recalls.    I agree with the food safety advocates that this new method in meat inspection will leave the public in danger. The public health will be in grave danger if the Department of Agriculture allows the workers of Tyson to insect their meat first. I hope the Department of Agriculture will make the right choice and continue to conduct inspections of Tysons meat like they have been and not allow Tyson workers to do so. By allowing Tyson workers to inspect their meat first, they could miss critical signs and can even cover up any signs. The Department of Agriculture might even be less strict while doing their inspection if they know that someone had already checked it before them. Tyson isn’t thinking about the safety of their consumers, I believe they are only thinking about ways to make more money quicker.  Therefore it is our duty to make sure that we speak out about the safety of what we consume and make sure the companies are making changes that will protect the public health.
