2. Objectives:
At the end of this session, the
participants should be able to:
understand the content, features, and
processes involved in the conduct and
preparation of Action Research;
determine possible research
problem/s;
identify the benefits of conducting an
Action Research.
3. Give your idea/s to the following:
Action Research
Basic Research
Intervention
Dependent Variable
BERF
4. What is Action Research?
This type of research studies an on-going
practice of a school, organization, or
institution for the purpose of obtaining
results that will bring improvement in the
system
A process of systematic, reflective inquiry
to improve educational practices or resolve
problems in any operating unit (i.e. school,
classroom, office)
It is focused on the immediate application,
not on the development of a theory
It puts emphasis on a problem in a local
setting
5. Why do we need to conduct
AR?
Teachers/School Heads are
encouraged to conduct action
research that would improve teaching
and learning. Specifically, in the
Position and Competency Profile of
Master Teachers, Master Teachers
and School Heads are expected to
conduct in-depth studies or action
researches on instructional problems
and to conduct at least one action
research every year respectively.
6. Parts of AR Proposal
Based on DepEd Order No. 16, s. 2017 – BERF Requirements
7. CONTEXT AND RATIONALE
The nature, extent and salience of the
identified problem or issue are
comprehensively discussed. Different aspects
of the action research setting are elaborated
showing in depth and critical analysis of the
situation.
Provides with a bird’s eye view of the situation
in your area of concern
Provides a clearer understanding of the
present dissatisfying practice / situation that
needs to be improved
8. CONTEXT AND RATIONALE
Important Elements:
• Expectation
• Target / Mandate
• Psychological and educational theories,
concepts and principles
• Current Situation
• What is your current practice?
• How are you teaching? (strategy,
methodology, IMs, practice)
• Current Performance
• Gap
9. ACTION RESEARCH QUESTIONS
Identifies the problem/s which will be
addressed by the research in terms of
investigating or testing an idea; trying out
solutions to a problem; creating a new
procedure or system; explaining a
phenomenon; or a combination of any of these.
The research question(s) logically proceeds
from the context of the inquiry. It clearly relates
to the identified problem or issue and conveys
the desired change or improvement.
10. PROPOSED INNOVATION,
INTERVENTION AND STRATEGY
The rationale, extent and limitation
of the intervention, innovation or
strategy are explained in detail. Its
plausibility as a way to address the
problem or issue is given support.
11. Action Research Methods
Participant and/or other sources of
Data and Information
Data Gathering Methods
Ethical Issues
Plan for Data Analysis
12. Participant and/or other sources of
Data and Information
Details are provided about the target
participants (ex: number,
characteristics, sampling procedure, if
any) and/or other sources of data and
information. Clear rationale for their
inclusion in the study is given.
13. Data Gathering Methods
The proposal explains why the selected
gathering method(s) is suited to the
nature and purpose of the action
research. The data gathering method(s)
is aligned with the research
questions(s). Research instruments, if
any, are appropriate for obtaining the
desired kind of data/information.
14. Ethical Issues
The ethical concerns in research should be
discussed.
• Were the participants of your research
informed that they are going to be part of a
research? If Yes, how did you inform them?
• If the respondents are children, the parents
should also be informed that their children
will be part of your study.
• Did you use any literature? If yes, did you
acknowledge them properly?
15. Plan for Data Analysis
The selected method of data analysis is
shown to be appropriate to the nature
of the data/information to be gathered
and for addressing the research
question(s).
16. ACTION RESEARCH WORK
PLAN AND TIMELINES
A detailed work plan is provided covering
start to completion of the action research.
Timelines are realistic and show concretely
how the action research will unfold over the
allowed period. The overall plan reflects the
proponent’s capacity to concretize ideas
into clear and sequential steps to be
undertaken.

A detailed breakdown of items with their
corresponding costs is furnished. The
items and costs reasonable reflect the
funding needs of the research, and
adhere to BERF guidelines. The overall
plan reflects the proponent’s capacity to
project specific expenses that she / he
will be accountable for.

Directions: Fill in the box with your independent and dependent
variable. Time allotment is 5 minutes.
31. MY TITLE
What are the characteristics of a good research title?
1. The dependent and independent variable
should be in the title. (Intervention and the
expected outcome)
2. Indicate accurately the subject and scope of
the study.
3. Use of Acronyms is allowed to catch the
attention of the reader. An acronym is
considered as one word. In cases where
grade level is placed, use Hindu Arabic
Number (e.g. Grade 5)
32. 4. Use words that promote positive
connotation (avoid the words “lack”)
5. Use of words: Maximum of 15 words
excluding the function words.
6. In case of Qualitative research, use
declarative question form for the title.
7. Title format: ALL CAPITAL LETTER.
Not bold, not underlined.
34. Activity # 5: MY TITLE
Construct the
title of your
research for
four minutes.
