Presentation by The Climate Trust's Program Manager, Peter Weisberg, at the Sustainable Food Trade Association. Presentation includes: the basics of biogas, project case studies; and the climate benefit of biogas.
1. Biogas as Vehicle Fuel

2. About The Climate Trust
• Founded in 1997; focused on domestic carbon markets.
• Finance projects that depend upon environmental credits.
• Biogas projects have the opportunity to generate carbon offsets, Low Carbon Fuel Standard Credits,
and Renewable identification Numbers.
• Financed
• 13 biogas projects, with an obligation to purchase $12.85 million of carbon offsets.
• Projects anticipated to reduce 1.48 million mt CO2e greenhouse gas emissions.
Current Business
• The Climate Trust finances forestry, agriculture and biogas projects that generate carbon offsets.
3. What is biogas?
Biogas is generated by breaking down organic waste in an anaerobic digester, frequently sited at
• Livestock farms
• Food processors
• Waste water treatment plants
Once cleaned and injected into the pipeline, it is a renewable substitute for natural gas.
4. Avoided methane emissions – unique climate benefit
Biogas projects reduce greenhouse gas emissions by
1. Producing renewable energy (about 20% of the reduction)
2. Avoiding methane emissions (about 80% of the reduction)

5. Example: Farm Power Rexville Anaerobic Digester
• Aggregates manure from 1,500 cows from two dairies
• Mt. Vernon, Washington
• Annually reduces 6,000 + mt CO2e greenhouse gas emissions

7. Takeaway: A unit of biogas energy provides about five times the climate benefit as energy from other
renewables like wind and solar.

8. Fair Oaks Farms:
• 11,000 cow dairy generates 865 MMBtu of renewable natural gas each day
9. Fair Oaks Farms
• Fuel is used to operate 42 milk hauling trucks to haul milk from Fair Oaks Farms to Kroger dairy
processing plants.
• Saves an estimated 1.5 million gallons of diesel per year.
10. Flexibility
• CNG fueling stations can contract to purchase renewable natural gas from projects injecting
biogas into the pipeline.
• Clean Energy’s Redeem Program
• Clean Energy = 350 natural gas fueling stations throughout North America.
• Offered throughout Clean Energy’s public CNG and LNG stations in California.
• Available to Clean Energy fleet vehicle customers outside of California.
