Ecommerce website development services are today a matured concept. Fundamentally,
electronic commerce or ecommerce refers to buying and selling of products or services
online. What was once an alien concept is today an inevitable task for millions across the
world. Ecommerce was introduced in the 1970s and since then, the concept of buying and
selling has observed landmark changes.
The Early Years
The Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) bid goodbye to the traditional mailing system with
transferring data from computer to another in the digital format. With this system, orders,
invoices and other transactions were transferred in the ANSI code, the most popular and
widely used North American set of standards. EDI thus permitted transfer of data without
manual intervention. In the late 1970s, Michael Aldrich, a popular English inventor was
credited with creating the first teleshopping experience when he connected his television to
a transaction processing computer and telephone to buy groceries from a supermarket.

2. The Mid Years
The time period between 1980 and 1990 marked the development of B2B online shopping. In
the year 1982, France launched the predecessor to the internet, the Minitel. Minitel
connected millions of users to a computing network and services could be accessed through
telephone lines. In 1991, the Minitel reached its pinnacle but eventually it died a slow death
when Internet was introduced in 1994. By 2011, France Telecom totally shut down Minitel.

3. The World Wide Web made its entry in 1990 when Tim Berners Lee and Robert Cailliau
built a Hypertext project. Domain names of businesses across the world were rapidly
registered. Thereafter, there has been no looking back. Consumerism took on a new
dimension with ecommerce website development services. From the mid nineties to the
2000s, internet and e-shopping saw a lot of advancement. Launched in 1995 as a mere
bookstore, Amazon is today the largest online retailer with best practices that the world
follows. Today, their product line up is perhaps the biggest and most diversified. The website
has several features and functionalities including user reviews, rating scales, comparisons and
testimonials well presented to appeal to visitors and returning customers. In 2010, the online
retailer saw 65 million customer visits to its US website every month on an average. Ebay,
Zappos and Victoria Secret followed suit in the online arena with Amazon.
The growing use of internet and rapid development of multiple smart devices including the
PC, tablet, smartphone and other handheld devices are only set to enhance and increase
online shopping and transacting experience. Every step in the online space is further
accentuating the presence and success of ecommerce sites. Better content and realistic
shopping experience are components of ecommerce website development services.
Innovative technologies and the mobile are only further entrenching the presence of
ecommerce websites. Mobile shopping has become the new age mantra that facilitates
consumers to buy anything from anywhere and anytime. The market for mobile payments is
expected to touch $630 billion in 2014. And the growth has been forecasted to be several
times higher in the near future.
