ight months into the pandemic and the world seems to
Ehave settled around it. Yes, we are still waiting for the
vaccine to arrive and we are still following all the
precautions that we can. However, it also seems that we have
accepted the fact that the pandemic is still here but life must go
on.
So, after months of inertness and anticipation, corporate,
private and public offices are gradually trying to return to
normalcy. However, this time the normalcy is different. While
we always expect change and technological disruptions to
modify the way we work, this time around, we were in for some
surprise.
In the Indian context, work meant religiously going to the office.
If you are not in the office, you are probably not working
enough. For Indians, the pandemic came as a cultural shock
when suddenly, a wish many were pleading for, came true. All
those who wanted to work from home (WFH) and those who did
not, were given the chance to work from home. In all, it was a
great experiment that the corporate world and government had
no option but to take.
From the
EDITOR
The first month was mayhem, to sum up, as the
company administrative heads were still trying to figure
out the how’s of the new working model. The IT
industry, in these terms, was better prepared than most
of the sectors as WFH was already being implemented
in a limited manner. The manufacturing industry was
hard hit because machines ca not really be
manufactured/run from home. Productivity, always a
buzzword in the corporate lingo, suddenly found new
meaning and formulae with flexible working hours.
In the following months, things did settle down, with IT
making a comfortable switch to long-term WFH.
However, the industry had to let go of many human
resources that it could not fit into its scheme of things.
The manufacturing industry realized that automation is
a good thing and that its people can work in shifts and
rotations to maintain social distance and keep the
company running. Also, most of the companies have
now shifted to a hybrid mode of working. This means an
effective shuffling of resources to keep the productivity
at max and physical contact of resources at a minimum.
To summarize, the lockdown has actually been a reset.
Companies who managed to see beyond the looming
threat and geared up for the transition ahead are
gradually adapting and will eventually manage to rise
and restore their status in the new normal. Those who
did not have either vanished or are waiting to be
written-off. However, time is subject to change and who
knows with a little effort, many would rise like a
phoenix.
In this edition of Insights Success, we present
“Companies in Focus 2020”. These companies held on
to their dreams, grit and people and are already reaping
the benefits. Striding through tough times, they have
stood up for themselves and a few for others as well.

ver since blockchain broke
into the technology
firmament, it has been touted
as the most secure and robust
technology that is practically
unalterable by design. Originally
invented to serve as public
transaction ledger of the first digital
currency, bitcoin, it solved the
double-spending problem. The

several other applications, cutting
across a gamut of industries.
Companies—both established and

blockchain at its core and a vision

journey of ascension since 2011.
Initially, Orrtus started working on

As the Founder and Director of Orrtus
Technology, Mr. Samad Waseem’ entrepreneurial
journey has been full of ups and downs. He took
each day as a learning experience that has helped
shaped his personality, focus, and his vision for the
company. It was through hits and misses of the past
that he could come up with the focus areas for
Orrtus and has put the company on a growth
trajectory since then.
For Mr. Samad, the journey has just received the
impetus that he was looking for. He believes that
entrepreneurship does not come easy and one has
to give it all to succeed. Sharing his experience with

study of the market one is trying to enter into is
crucial. Take time to study what you are trying to
sell or introduce in the market. Equally crucial is

What underlying challenges did you
come across in the initial phase (or
continue to face) of your company?
As an entrepreneur failure was
inevitable, I only started moving
forward when I learned to befriend it
rather than fear failure. Since I started
with no capital the initial process was
difficult, more like a chicken and egg
question. What comes first, a client or
an employee?
Lack of a resources slowed down the
process as I had to wear all hats, from
sales, to finding freelancers,
accounting, client management and
simultaneously learning digital tools to
sharpen my ability. However in time I
grew my team and developed a knack
to solve problems faster and provide
better results for clients by genuinely
caring enough to see them win more
than only focusing on a quick buck I
would make.
As an entrepreneur, what is your
opinion on the current COVID-19
crisis and its impact on economy,
employment and human life?
COVID 19 has been unfortunate for all
of us. For the first time in decades we
are going through a situation where
most entrepreneurs are pushed against
the wall to adapt quickly or simply
manage to sustain their operations
during this period. COVID has only
aggravated the existing economic
slump businesses are seeing in the past
2 years in India and this might only
worsen the situation. However it is
important to note that industries which
are more labor intensive or have high
operational costs will take longer to

recover compared to the businesses in
the technology and digital space, who
have been seeing an upward growth in
their revenue since April. The economy
should recover in due time however it
becomes important as individuals to
plan our finances and not make hasty
or huge financial decisions until there
is a certain sense of normalcy back in
the economy.
Being a business leader and an
industry expert, what advice would
you give to the future entrepreneurs
or those who aspire to start their
own ventures?
Don’t Think, Do.

entrepreneur, during your early stages
equip yourself with these two

for your future business endeavors.

self, start experimenting with ideas and execute them
cheaply. I started 6 Businesses with almost no investment
and failed in all of them technically, but got smarter with
each failure. Today the 7th Business I started with no
Investment has grown within 2 years to a team of 20 and
two offices in London and India. Be okay to fail, try new
things and always understand that the first step to making
wealth is to believing that you can!
What do you envision for your company’s future in
terms of growth, expansion or other developmental
aspects?
Ecommerce has been our strongest suit, today more than
ever there are 1,000’s of early stage startups in this country
trying to sell some product or service online. Most of them
end up wasting money and time on trial and error as they
cannot afford good agencies. We plan to create a guidance
and consulting services package for Ecommerce, which
allows them to do it themselves however supported by our
consulting team. Primarily helping them save money, time
and starting right from the beginning. The service includes
everything from what website platform to use, how images
must be shot for conversions, plugins to be added, what
platforms to advertise first, how to run and scale ads and so
on. Our goal is to help a completely new segment of
entrepreneurs start their journey right.
24 year old entrepreneur, Sahaan Suman K is the
CEO of Bubble Network and the Director of SSK
Capital an E-commerce driven investment fund. He
started his first venture at the age of 18, and failed
mul ple mes tes ng small business ideas with
li le or no money during college. He comes from a
lineage of business families, learning fast from his
early days, and made his first mark as an

by past trends and current
developments, MMR and Pune
are likely to witness the highest
housing sales improvement
during the ongoing festive
quarter - by 36% and 34%
respectively. In MMR, housing
sales in Q3 2020 stood at 9,200
units, and 4,850 units in Pune.
These two leading western
markets have a major edge over
their other counterparts during
the festive season.

unprecedentedly low home loan interest rates and the
Maharashtra State government’s limited-period stamp

between Jan.-Mar. 2021. The overall financial benefit
amounts to a reduction of anywhere between 7-15% on
the total property cost.”
MMR and Pune vs Others in last 5 Festive Quarters
Usually, the festive (October to December) quarter sees
housing sales across cities improve due to the
auspiciousness of this period. During the ‘shradh’ period in
the previous quarter, many homebuyers abstain from
making purchases. Developers therefore go all out to draw
customers with freebies and discounts in the festive season.
A 5-year analysis of quarterly housing sales growth in the
top 7 cities during the festive quarter against the preceding
one shows that the western markets of MMR and Pune
consistently stood on top.
In 2015, while the other five cities saw sales decline
between 5% to 18% in fourth quarter over previous one,
MMR and Pune both recorded a 30% quarterly growth.
In 2016 and 2017, while 4th quarter sales plummeted q-o-q
in all cities due to Demo, RERA and GST, MMR and Pune
saw the least decline. Sales in these two cities reduced by
35% and 37% in 2016 and 15% and 18% in 2017
respectively in the festive quarter over the third quarter. In
all other cities, the decline was higher - NCR, for instance,
recorded a decline of 59% in 2016 and 23% in 2017.
In Q4 2018, MMR saw sales rise by 11% and Pune by 7%
on a quarterly basis. In contrast, Bangalore saw sales reduce
by 9% during the same period.
In 2019, MMR and Pune saw housing sales increase by 7%
and 10% respectively in the festive quarter over the
previous one.

Due to Covid19 a significant amount of EdTech platforms
have emerged and in order to sustain and stand out from
this clutter, we have been working aggressively to enable
better user experience with diverse course offerings across
all ages.
Currently, we are also working on developing our
proprietary technology with AI and other tools to ensure
advanced features for more engaged learning, at suitable
price points. Additionally, with our current and upcoming
ventures as well as partnerships, we are planning to expand
into the B2G realm efficiently.
What underlying challenges did you come across in the
initial phase (or continue to face) of your company?
Like every startup, we too had our share of challenges to
address. We launched a unique and affordable learning
model, which is very different than the existing eLearning
platforms. Our key challenge was to help consumers
understand the differentiation, and also break the mindset
that ‘Quality comes only at a price’, as we at Edubull have
brought the most affordable learning solutions only at 999/-.
Rather than spending on aggressive advertising, we
strategized winning trust of the consumers organically,
which definitely had its share of trials too. Having said
that, all of this is part of our learning and growth. We
always look for ways to overcome whatever we face and so
far it’s been good.
Being a business leader and an industry expert, what
advice would you give to the future entrepreneurs or
those who aspire to start their own ventures?
My advice to the future entrepreneurs would be to “To
market first and build later”. We often spend so much time
perfecting a product that we overlook the most important
aspect being gaining users. Plus, it’s always better to build
as you get feedback, as that perfects the product
comparatively more.
What do you envision for your company’s future, in
terms of growth, expansion, or, other developmental
aspects?
We want to use the current momentum to provide more
quality education and make it accessible to everyone. We
recently expanded into the B2B marketplace, so coming
months are key to monitor adoption behaviour and growth.
We are also stressing on bringing more interactive methods
on Edubull and provide better learning experience to users.

Why it is important to let go of the old fingerprint
biometric system and upgrade to contactless
attendance system?
Fingerprint biometric scanner works when you press
your finger against the scanner and it finds a match in its
stored database. This is the main drawback of this
system in the current Covid scenario, as every employee
has to go through that process. Let’s consider an
example. Suppose one of the employees is positive and
he or she sneezes on hand. When he/she touches the
machine with the same hand, the virus would be

How did the trip to Florida lead to the
founda on of Space Kidz India?
During the trip to Florida, I felt great to
represent India at the two day meet in
the US. I enjoyed being one of the
10,000 delegates and there were 3,600
booths at the conference. When I
visited the NASA booth, I came to
know they conduct a space camp for
kids and they men oned to me that no
students come to them from India,
hence, I had invited the Space coast
Director and team to Chennai to speak
to the Indian audience about their
Space program.
Kennedy Space Centre- NASA gave me
the recogni on as their ambassador. I
faced some ini al hiccups as it was
hard to convince parents to send their
kids to the US and also ge ng US visas
from the consulate due to a lack of
proper papers for many of the
children.
But, finally, I could manage to mobilize
as many as 108 children from 8th to
12th standard in the 12-16 years age
group. The first delega on of children
for NASA le on April 27, 2010. It is
the 10th anniversary of our maiden
trip and my entry to entrepreneurship.
It was no small achievement for me as
I was searching for a purpose in my life
ll then. There at KSC, NASA, I learned
many things about satellites and
rockets, their importance in the
scien fic progress of a country. That
trip inspired me to take up many more
visits to NASA as well as other space
centers in Europe and Russia.

The space industry is just as vast as
Space! Whereas in India there are few

of life on Earth. So every mission of
ours is unique and has a certain

& satellites as we have launched and
also the first to break the barrier as
students launching the world’s
smallest satellite and standing unique

What underlying challenges did you
come across in the ini al phase (or
con nue to face) of your company?
Well the challenges, ini ally faced as
the first ambassador for the NASA
space camps was humongous,
because, very seldom children are
permi ed as young as 12 years old to
cross oceans, fly and go to a different
land to learn something for a week. So,
parents were skep cal about sending
their children with a total stranger and
hence, I had to work hard to convince
them and I should say by the grace of
god it really worked and today I can
proudly say I was able to
take about 1500 children of all age
groups between 12-22 years across
the Country to United States, Canada,
and to Russia, currently being the
ambassador to the Russian Space
Center I have taken enough and more
children to Gagarin Cosmonaut
training centre, Moscow and also
being the ambassador for the Aero
fes val - “MAKS, Russia''.
I was able to take children there too.
At MAKS the children are awarded for
their crea vity their presenta on and
model making with regards to
Aerospace. We had the opportunity to
meet President Mr. Pu n, though we

rapidly spread around the world,
posing enormous health, economic,
environmental, and social

Amidst the current Coronavirus crisis,
and despite government s mulus
efforts, overall funding is rapidly drying
up as banks and venture capital firms
retreat to the sidelines. Every company
– startup and se led firm alike – will
have to focus its energies on execu on
while husbanding what cash reserves
they have. Let’s hope the best of them
make it through with their values
intact. We should not allow the
current situa on to let us forget how
cri cal it is to cul vate and
incubate new ideas.
Despite all efforts – global lock down,
social distancing guidelines, and
increased sani za on — the number
of COVID-19 cases has been rising
across the world. However, with the
excep onal efforts of doctors and
other healthcare workers, over two
million people have recovered from
this infec ous disease. But does your
life return to normal a er recovery?
The COVID-19 saga will come to an
end without a doubt.
We will get back to our lives and visit
the great outdoors. But that life will be
significantly different. Moreover,
reaching that point will depend on our
current ac ons. We must respect
social distancing measures and reduce
the spread of the disease. Only then
will we experience the post-pandemic
world.
Being a business leader and an
industry expert, what advice would
you give to future entrepreneurs or
those who aspire to start their
ventures?
The journey of entrepreneurship is an
extremely beau ful one. I would
a ribute it to giving birth to a child,
ten months of pain, and one beau ful
outcome. So how many ever
challenges we face during the startup
and then as we grow s ll there are
beau ful moments that we could
cherish forever that will mould us to
be a good entrepreneur, a responsible
human being for the society and the
country. India needs more exports
rather than imports, being a huge
subcon nent with varied cultures.
I presume we need to come up with
more innova ve ideas, more global
industries, new techniques that can be
a support to the global ecosystem. I
would encourage more and more
entrepreneurs so that our GDP will be
in fancy figures. “As a woman myself, I
would like to encourage fellow women
to become entrepreneurs be it small
scale, mid-scale or large scale
whatever be the capacity but be an
entrepreneur and lead the country.”
What do you envision for your
company’s future in terms of growth,
expansion, or other developmental
aspects?
I am a very ambi ous entrepreneur,
not for growing my ki y but very
ambi ous in spreading knowledge in
science amongst the youth of the
country and crea ng more scien fic
entrepreneurs for the country. About
the space industry, we have started
working on a small rocket that would
take a payload between 1 and 10 kilos.
This is purely gonna be educa onal
and we have about 8000 higher
educa on ins tu ons in the country
and I am sure we will have a launch
every month.
Now that the finance ministers opened
up the partnership between private
players and ISRO, we are looking
forward to having a partnership and
u lizing the facility of ISRO for
launching our small rockets. This is
definitely going to be not only
commercially successful but also it is
going to build a huge brand image for
the country across the globe.
About	the	Leader
Dr.	Srimathy	Kesan,	born	to	an	
auto-mobile	engineer	Srinivasan	
and	a	homemaker	Meena,	was	an	
active	student	in	sports	and	NCC	
right	from	her	school	days.	She	
pursued	B.Com	and	parallelly	
represented	Andhra	Pradesh	in	10	
Basketball	Nationals	apart	from	
being	a	State	athlete.	An	early	
marriage	took	her	to	Chennai	
where	she	got	busy	with	her	
family	putting	a	pause	to	her	
career.
Not	one	to	be	bogged	down	by	
problems,	she	took	up	a	variety	of	
activities	ranging	from	giving	
voice-over	to	making	ad	 ilms	and	
penning	scripts,	fashion	
choreography,	after	a	hiatus	of	
around	16	years.	A	confessed	hard	
worker,	a	travel	conference	saw	
her	meeting	an	old	friend,	and	an	
opportunity	for	an	international	
travel	conference	at	Florida	in	the	
US,	in	February	2009.
That	trip	changed	the	life	of	
Srimathy	for	good	and	events	
thereafter	led	to	the	
establishment	of	Space	Kidz	India.

  • 4. THE EXPERIMENTAL YEAR ight months into the pandemic and the world seems to Ehave settled around it. Yes, we are still waiting for the vaccine to arrive and we are still following all the precautions that we can. However, it also seems that we have accepted the fact that the pandemic is still here but life must go on. So, after months of inertness and anticipation, corporate, private and public offices are gradually trying to return to normalcy. However, this time the normalcy is different. While we always expect change and technological disruptions to modify the way we work, this time around, we were in for some surprise. In the Indian context, work meant religiously going to the office. If you are not in the office, you are probably not working enough. For Indians, the pandemic came as a cultural shock when suddenly, a wish many were pleading for, came true. All those who wanted to work from home (WFH) and those who did not, were given the chance to work from home. In all, it was a great experiment that the corporate world and government had no option but to take.
  • 5. From the EDITOR The first month was mayhem, to sum up, as the company administrative heads were still trying to figure out the how’s of the new working model. The IT industry, in these terms, was better prepared than most of the sectors as WFH was already being implemented in a limited manner. The manufacturing industry was hard hit because machines ca not really be manufactured/run from home. Productivity, always a buzzword in the corporate lingo, suddenly found new meaning and formulae with flexible working hours. In the following months, things did settle down, with IT making a comfortable switch to long-term WFH. However, the industry had to let go of many human resources that it could not fit into its scheme of things. The manufacturing industry realized that automation is a good thing and that its people can work in shifts and rotations to maintain social distance and keep the company running. Also, most of the companies have now shifted to a hybrid mode of working. This means an effective shuffling of resources to keep the productivity at max and physical contact of resources at a minimum. To summarize, the lockdown has actually been a reset. Companies who managed to see beyond the looming threat and geared up for the transition ahead are gradually adapting and will eventually manage to rise and restore their status in the new normal. Those who did not have either vanished or are waiting to be written-off. However, time is subject to change and who knows with a little effort, many would rise like a phoenix. COVID has only aggravated the existing economic slump businesses are seeing in the past 2 years in India and this might only worsen the situation. Being a business leader and an industry expert, what advice would you give to the future entrepreneurs or those who aspire to start their own ventures? What do you envision for your company’s future in terms of growth, expansion or other developmental aspects? Ecommerce has been our strongest suit, today more than ever there are 1,000’s of early stage startups in this country trying to sell some product or service online. I faced some ini al hiccups as it was hard to convince parents to send their kids to the US and also ge ng US visas from the consulate due to a lack of proper papers for many of the children. But, finally, I could manage to mobilize as many as 108 children from 8th to 12th standard in the 12-16 years age group. The first delega on of children for NASA le on April 27, 2010. It is the 10th anniversary of our maiden trip and my entry to entrepreneurship. It was no small achievement for me as I was searching for a purpose in my life ll then. There at KSC, NASA, I learned many things about satellites and rockets, their importance in the scien fic progress of a country. That trip inspired me to take up many more visits to NASA as well as other space centers in Europe and Russia. So, parents were skep cal about sending their children with a total stranger and hence, I had to work hard to convince them and I should say by the grace of god it really worked and today I can proudly say I was able to take about 1500 children of all age groups between 12-22 years across the Country to United States, Canada, and to Russia, currently being the ambassador to the Russian Space Center I have taken enough and more children to Gagarin Cosmonaut training centre, Moscow and also being the ambassador for the Aero fes val - “MAKS, Russia''. I was able to take children there too. At MAKS the children are awarded for their crea vity their presenta on and model making with regards to Aerospace. We had the opportunity to meet President Mr. Pu n, though we did not go very close to him, but yes, of course, we had an opportunity to meet him and we also had an opportunity to meet and interact with the Science and Educa on Minister of Russia. So it was a great treat I should say. Well, the opportuni es are huge as now the parents have understood the importance of sending their children abroad for educa onal tourism because it's not only that they spend their valuable me on one par cular thing for example when I take children to NASA or Russia I not only take them to the Space Center but also a couple of Universi es there to give them hands-on experience and awareness on what disciplines are available across the globe and that apart, of course, a cultural tour and a cultural performance at the senate, Universi es, etc. is an add on. Now our sector has got some relaxa on from the government and we hope many opportuni es are opening up and we are ready to align accordingly and work. As an entrepreneur, what is your opinion on the current COVID-19 crisis and its impact on the economy, employment, and human life? It has rapidly spread around the world, posing enormous health, economic, environmental, and social challenges to the en re human popula on. Amidst the current Coronavirus crisis, and despite government s mulus efforts, overall funding is rapidly drying up as banks and venture capital firms retreat to the sidelines. Every company – startup and se led firm alike – will have to focus its energies on execu on while husbanding what cash reserves they have. Let’s hope the best of them make it through with their values intact. We should not allow the current situa on to let us forget how cri cal it is to cul vate and incubate new ideas. Despite all efforts – global lock down, social distancing guidelines, and increased sani za on — the number of COVID-19 cases has been rising across the world. However, with the excep onal efforts of doctors and other healthcare workers, over two million people have recovered from this infec ous disease. But does your life return to normal a er recovery? The COVID-19 saga will come to an end without a doubt. We will get back to our lives and visit the great outdoors. But that life will be significantly different. Moreover, reaching that point will depend on our current ac ons. We must respect social distancing measures and reduce the spread of the disease. Only then will we experience the post-pandemic world. Being a business leader and an industry expert, what advice would you give to future entrepreneurs or those who aspire to start their ventures? The journey of entrepreneurship is an extremely beau ful one. I would a ribute it to giving birth to a child, ten months of pain, and one beau ful outcome. So how many ever challenges we face during the startup and then as we grow s ll there are beau ful moments that we could cherish forever that will mould us to be a good entrepreneur, a responsible human being for the society and the country. India needs more exports rather than imports, being a huge subcon nent with varied cultures. I presume we need to come up with more innova ve ideas, more global industries, new techniques that can be a support to the global ecosystem. I would encourage more and more entrepreneurs so that our GDP will be in fancy figures. “As a woman myself, I would like to encourage fellow women to become entrepreneurs be it small scale, mid-scale or large scale whatever be the capacity but be an entrepreneur and lead the country.” What do you envision for your company’s future in terms of growth, expansion, or other developmental aspects? I am a very ambi ous entrepreneur, not for growing my ki y but very ambi ous in spreading knowledge in science amongst the youth of the country and crea ng more scien fic entrepreneurs for the country. About the space industry, we have started working on a small rocket that would take a payload between 1 and 10 kilos. This is purely gonna be educa onal and we have about 8000 higher educa on ins tu ons in the country and I am sure we will have a launch every month. Now that the finance ministers opened up the partnership between private players and ISRO, we are looking forward to having a partnership and u lizing the facility of ISRO for launching our small rockets. This is definitely going to be not only commercially successful but also it is going to build a huge brand image for the country across the globe. About the Leader Dr. Srimathy Kesan, born to an auto-mobile engineer Srinivasan and a homemaker Meena, was an active student in sports and NCC right from her school days. She pursued B.Com and parallelly represented Andhra Pradesh in 10 Basketball Nationals apart from being a State athlete. An early marriage took her to Chennai where she got busy with her family putting a pause to her career.
