SECTION 2 - DEBATE OF THE WEEK
Diego Costa set to Miss Champions League final against Real
Madrid after Atletico Madrid confirm striker has torn hamstring.
Who do you Think Will Win the UEFA Champions League Title
this Season?
Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa is set to miss the
Champions League final against Real Madrid after tearing his
hamstring in his side's 1-1 draw with Barcelona on Saturday.
The Brazilian-born forward was forced off after just 15 minutes
at the Nou Camp having pulled up following a burst into
Barca's half. He had been struggling with a hamstring problem
prior to the weekend title decider but was deemed fit enough
to start for Diego Simeone's side.
Tests on Monday have indicated that the 25-year-old's latest injury will likely keep him out of action for 15
days, causing him to miss Saturday's showpiece final in Lisbon against local rivals Real.
Atletico tweeted that the striker, who has been included in Spain's World Cup squad, had suffered a grade
one tear. He should be fit in time to keep his place in Vicente del Bosque's plans for Brazil. Despite the
severity of his injury, Simeone has not yet given up hope of having Costa available this weekend.
He said: 'We will work for have Diego Costa available on Saturday, but it’s really difficult. 'There are several
days to go and we are not going to predict now, so soon before such an important match. He is an
important player but he needs to be ready.'
Atletico are in the final stages of a historic season but the intensity of the campaign has taken its toll and
Arda Turan is also a doubt for the final with a pelvic injury. 'We will wait to see how Arda and Costa are by
the end of the week. Given the situation that they are not ready then we will look for alternatives,' Simeone
said.
The Argentine said that the team are now fully concentrated on the final with Real after their league
triumph. 'It is always better to win and improve the morale of the players and the people. While we have
celebrated we have to now turn the page and we have several days to work hard knowing that we will face
strong rivals,' Simeone said.
'I would say that we have a 50 percent chance in the game. They have better individual players but we are a
team. We have plenty of motivation and they will have plenty as well which means that it will be an equal
match with the key in the middle of the pitch.'
Atletico have met Real on four occasions this season with a win and a draw in the league but they lost both
legs of their King's Cup semi-final tie.

Arsenal Win FA Cup to End Nine-Year Trophy Wait
An extra-time winner from Aaron Ramsey has given Arsenal their first title in nine-years after beating Hull
City 3-2 in the FA Cup final.
Steve Bruce's Hull took the lead after just three minutes when Tom Huddlestone struck a sweet volley which
was flicked in by James Chester. Arsenal were shocked and before they could get a hold of the game, Hull
struck again when Alex Bruce saw his effort hit the post, only for Curtis Davies to top home a second in eight
minutes.
Bruce then almost made it three seconds later when his header beat everyone except for Kieran Gibbs, who
headed off the line. Spanish midfielder Santi Cazorla then curled in a superb effort past Hull keeper Allan
McGregor after 17 minutes.
The second half saw Arsenal come out strongly with Mikel Arteta twice testing McGregor but the Scottish
keeper stood tall to deny the North Londoners. However, he was helpless when French defender Laurent
Koscielny prodded home following a cross from Santi Cazorla.
The game would then head to extra time with neither side able to score in the 90 allocated minutes. A
goalless first half of extra time saw youngster Yaya Sanogo come close, whilst Olivier Giroud also had a
chance but he was blocked by the tireless Davies and Bruce.
Arsene Wenger hauled Tomas Rosicky and Jack Wilshere on at the break and it has some impact, prompting
a superb move that led to Aaron Ramsey's goal to put the Gunners 3-2 up. Yaya Sanogo continued to force
McGregor into important saves but as the clock wore on, Hull looked increasingly tired and the referee blew
full-time to end Arsenal's nine-year wait without a trophy.

The Premier League champions are under pressure to bring in English players this summer due to their
recent penalty from Uefa for breaching Financial Fair Play rules, and need to increase the number of
'homegrown' players in their squad.
Luis Suarez happy at Liverpool
Recently crowned PFA and Football Writers' Player of the Year, Luis Suarez, has insisted he is as happy as he
has been in his career at Liverpool, despite disappointment in the Premier League title race.
Liverpool narrowly missed out on the Premier League title on the final day of the season, with a win over
Newcastle not being enough to snatch the trophy away from Manchester City.
Liverpool Ready to Pay 12m€ to German Middfielder

summer and it is understood that the Northern Irish boss is a big admirer of Emre Can.
Can, has been impresing in the Bundesliga this season for Bayer Levekusen and can play at either left-back,
centre midfield or in attacking midfield, making him a big signing if the Anfield boss can secure his signature.
However, it is understood that Pep Guardiola is not interested, allowing Liverpool to submit their planned
£12m bid in the coming days.
Cole bids farewell to Chelsea
The 33-year-old is out of contract this summer following eight years at Stamford Bridge.
The left-back, who retired from international football after being left out of England's World Cup squad, said
on Twitter: "I am weighing up my options for playing next season with my agent and sadly it does not look
like chelsea will be one of them.

"Bitterly upset" Yaya Toure wants to quit Manchester City; Ryan Giggs will become Manchester United
manager in three years; and Ashley Cole will definitely leave Chelsea this summer - the main stories making

Manchester City laugh all the way to the bank after Uefa fine
Moneybags Manchester City have been fined £48.8million and handed a reduction in their Champions
League squad for next season from 25 to 21 players for breaching Uefa's financial fair play rules.
But the world's richest football club will have £32.5m of the fine returned if the Premier League champions
comply with spending controls agreed with Uefa so, by their standards, this is a mere slap on the wrist.

Atletico Madrid win La Liga title
Atletico Madrid claimed their 10th Spanish league crown on Saturday, May 17, 2014, but first in 18 years
after coming from behind to draw 1-1 away at title rivals Barcelona.
Alexis Sanchez's stunning strike fired Barca into the lead on 33 minutes, but Diego Godin's header four
minutes into the second-half was enough to give Atletico the point they needed to become the first side
other than Barca and Real Madrid to win La Liga in 10 years.
A point for both sides means that Barca finish the season ahead of third-placed Real Madrid thanks to a
better head-to-head record, three points adrift of Atletico. "There is an enormous feeling of happiness that
you cannot explain," said Atletico boss Diego Simeone.

Atletico's Costa set to miss Lisbon final, could also miss W.C.
The Atletico Madrid forward pulled up after only 15 minutes in their 1-1 draw with Barcelona at the
weekend. The club will determine the full extent of the injury later on Monday, but there is pessimism from
the Spanish Federation, who believe that the goalscorer has in fact pulled his hamstring.
If that is the case, then it is unlikely that he will be fit in time for La Roja’s first match of the tournament on
June 13 against Netherlands.
The paper quotes an unnamed member of the national team’s coaching staff, who insists: “We have to wait
for the report from the medical staff, but it doesn’t look good. “The problem is more serious because it’s a
recurrence of an injury in an area that had already been damaged. We have to wait, but we also have to
have an alternative plan.”

Take a quick look
This page contains the main weekly headlines related to this week’s La Liga main
news; you can read all full articles by clicking on the related titles.
68 fans hurt after Osasuna fence falls in La Liga relegation game
Osasuna and Valladolid were relegated to the Spanish second division on Sunday, but the final round of La
Liga matches was overshadowed by the collapse of a barrier which injured 58 fans at Osasuna’s El Sadar
stadium in Pamplona.
The Navarran Red Cross confirmed 10 people, including children, were taken to hospital and a further 48
suffered minor injuries when the barrier gave way under the pressure of fans surging forward after Oriol
Riera had given Osasuna the lead against already-relegated Real Betis.
Thibaut Courtois hints at Atletico Madrid departure
Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has hinted that his three-year loan spell with Atletico Madrid will come
to an end this summer.
The 22-year-old is contracted to parent club Chelsea, but has spent the last three seasons at the Vicente
Calderon, where he has developed into one of the best stoppers in world football. After winning La Liga with
the capital outfit on Saturday, Courtois suggested that he will return to England to continue his career.
Singaporean Lim buys controlling stake in Valencia
Singaporean businessman Peter Lim has taken a controlling stake of financially stricken La Liga side Valencia
after his bid to buy a 70.4 percent stake in the club previously owned by its foundation was unanimously
accepted on Saturday.
The club's hierarchy has been looking for investors since principal creditor Bankia refused back in December
to refinance the combined 306 million euro ($530 million) debt the club and its foundation has with the
bank.
Barcelona want Jeremy Mathieu
Barcelona will reportedly move for Valencia defender Jeremy Mathieu this summer.
The 30-year-old, who is under contract at the Mestalla until 2017, has been one of the standout centre-
backs in La Liga this season.
Barcelona choose club legend Luis Enrique to lead club forward
Luis Enrique arrives after an impressive campaign with Celta Vigo where they not only achieved their
objective of avoiding relegation, but finished in the top half of the table while winning many admirers for
their passing game. Barca this time have gone for a coach who is well aware of the pressures and strains of
day-to-day life at the club following the resignation of Gerardo Martino on Saturday.
Lionel Messi signs new mega-deal at Barcelona
The deal follows lengthy negotiations during which it was reported that the 26-year-old wanted to surpass
Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo as the best-paid player in the world. Barca revealed that an agreement over
a new deal had been reached on Friday and, while no details were disclosed, the Argentinian officially put
pen to paper on Monday.

Juve set new points record, Napoli take third
Champions Juventus eased their way through the 100-point barrier to end the Italian Serie A season with a
league record 102 thanks to a comfortable 3-0 win over Cagliari. Before taking possession of their third
straight Scudetto - the 30th in the club's history - the Bianconeri saw off the Sardinians with yet another
stylish performance, emphasising their superiority in Italian football once again.
Finishing 17 points behind the champions were runners-up Roma, whose prosperous campaign ended on a
sour note as Ioannis Fetfatzidis clinched a 1-0 victory for Genoa at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris. they can now
spend the summer preparing for a return to the Champ. League group stages having plundered 85 points.
Parma won a dramatic race for the final UEFA Europa League place at the expense of rivals Torino and AC
Milan. Torino started the night in sixth place and knew victory at Fiorentina would definitely see them
qualify for Europe, but they struggled to force a 2-2 draw at Fiorentina.
Three players - Philippe Mexes, Mattia De Sciglio and Paolo Cannavaro - were sent off as tempers flared in
Milan. Napoli celebrated another third-placed finish with a 5-1 romp against mid-table Hellas Verona. Jose
Callejon opened the scoring before Duvan Zapata hit two goals in 12 minutes. Dries Mertens grabbed a
brace of his own in the second half, with Juan Iturbe responding for Hellas in between times.
Inter Milan were counting their blessings they had managed to secure fifth place last weekend as Chievo
handed them a surprise 2-1 defeat in Verona.
Catania left Serie A with some pride after clinching a 2-1 win over Atalanta. The Sicilians took the lead
through Francesco Lodi in the 65th minute, but Moussa Kone brought Atalanta level. Bologna are also
returning to Serie B and bid farewell to the top flight with a 1-0 defeat at Lazio. The Biancocelesti were able
to snatch ninth place.

Controversy as Pep's Bayern win Cup in extra-time
Two goals in the second-half of extra time secured Bayern Munich’s 17th DFB Pokal at the expense of
Borussia Dortmund and a double for Pep Guardiola in his first season in Germany.
Mats Hummels thought he had edged Dortmund ahead in the second-half only for the officials to adjudge
his header had not crossed the line. Replays suggested that the ball was over the line before Dante hacked
clear.
Arjen Robben finally broke the deadlock deep into extra time, scoring his third German Cup final goal – only
Gerd Muller and Uwe Seeler have scored more – to put some shine on a largely disappointing showpiece
event.
And in the 123rd minute Thomas Mueller made it 2-0, stumbling through the Dortmund defence to round
Roman Weidenfeller and finish the season with the German championship and domestic cup in the bag.
Pep Guardiola' side lined up with an experimental 3-5-2 formation that included space for 18-year-old
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg as a right-sided wing-back.
But the three-man backline, consisting of Dante, Javi Martinez and Jerome Boateng, rarely faced up to any
intensive testing from Dortmund who were insipid in the final third.
Robben was deployed as the most advanced Bayern Munich attacking player, and he was a dangerous route
to goal in the opening exchanges.

Take a quick look
This page contains the main weekly headlines related to this week’s main news; you
can read all full articles by clicking on the related titles.
Schweinsteiger injuries worry Germany
Midfield general Bastian Schweinsteiger left Bayern Munich's final Bundesliga match of the season with a
knee injury giving Germany fans another scare ahead of the World Cup.
Germany desperately need Schweinsteiger to be fit for the Brazil campaign, but it has been a season of
many absences. And noone is giving a guarantee that he will be fit to start the Brazil campaign.
Wolfsburg bid €30m for Destro
German club Wolfsburg have reportedly offered €30m for Roma and Italy striker Mattia Destro.
The hitman recovered from a serious knee injury to net 13 goals in 19 Serie A games this season, earning a
place in the provisional World Cup squad.
Goalline technology back in focus after controversial final
Dortmund were confident they had scored against champions Bayern when Mats Hummels headed onto
goal in the 64th minute and defender Dante cleared the ball near the line with the score at 0-0.
Television replays showed both Dante's leg and the ball, even further behind in goal, were clearly over the
line.
Instead it was Bayern who struck twice in extra-time to lift the trophy and complete the domestic double.
Hamburg cling to top flight place on away goals
Former European champions Hamburg retained their place in Germany's top flight after coming out on top
against second division Gruether Fuerth thanks to their away goal in the 1-1 second-leg playoff draw on
Sunday.
The three-time Bundesliga winners, the only club never to have been relegated since the creation of the
Bundesliga in 1963, got the golden goal through forward Pierre-Michel Lasogga in the 14th minute after the
goalless first leg on Thursday.
Guardiola: Four titles not bad in 'toughest' first year
Former Barcelona coach Guardiola had a tough act to follow when he took over this season following
Bayern's treble-winning campaign under former coach Jupp Heynckes.
"This was a very difficult year for me, my first in Germany. So four titles is good," he said after their 2-0 Cup
win over Dortmund.
Mandzukic set to leave Bayern after Cup final snub
The Croatian striker's future at the club now appears to be in serious doubt with Robert Lewandowski
joining the club in the summer on a free transfer from Saturday's opponents.
Pep Guardiola confirmed the 27-year-old had been injured recently but that was not why he was left out of
the squad.

News in the Highlights
Sochaux relegated, Lille clinch Champions League spot
Sochaux lost their final-day decider against Evian 3-0 and suffered relegation from Ligue 1 on Saturday.
Herve Renard’s men, who had secured survival on the last day in each of the last two seasons, went into the
game needing a win to complete a dramatic escape for the third consecutive year.
However, Sochaux could not deliver the goods this time around as Evian sealed safety thanks to a Daniel
Wass double and a strike from centre-back Aldo Angoula.
At the other end of the table Lillesecured a place in next season’s UEFA Champions League by coming from
behind to beat Lorient 4-1.
PSG boss Al-Khelaifi defiant despite UEFA sanctions
"The players that I want, I'll have them," Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi insisted Saturday,
telling AFP that UEFA's financial fair play sanctions would not effect his team next season.
UEFA on Friday fined PSG 60 million euros ($82 million, £49 million) and capped their Champions League squad
to 21 for falling foul of financial fair play rules.
Mandanda taken for scans after head injury
France international goalkeeper Steve Mandanda was taken to hospital for tests after suffering a head injury
during Marseille's home match against Guingamp on Saturday, his Ligue 1 club said.
Mandanda, who has been named in coach Didier Deschamps' 23-man squad for the 2014 World Cup finals, was
stretchered off during the first half of Marseille's final game of the Ligue 1 season after he was caught by the
knee of Guingamp striker Mustapha Yatabare at the Stade Velodrome.
Bordeaux Admit Zidane Interest
Bordeaux’s majority shareholder has admitted that Zinedine Zidane would be an ‘incredible option’.
The Ligue 1 outfit have been heavily linked with a move for the Real Madrid assistant, with several reports
suggesting that they will approach the former midfielder with the chance to take his first managerial role. And
for the first time, someone at the club has conceded that the World Cup-winner is an option for them.
Leonardo Jardim poised to replace Claudio Ranieri as Monaco coach
Monaco appear poised to replace coach Claudio Ranieri with Leonardo Jardim following the club's final game of
the season on Saturday.
Following promotion from Ligue 2 at the end of last season, Ranieri has guided Monaco to a guaranteed second
place in the top flight behind Paris Saint-Germain, and with it Champions League football next season.
Reports in Portugal and France, however, are suggesting Jardim has signed a two-year deal with Monaco after
just one year in charge of Sporting Lisbon, who finished runner-up to Benfica in the Portuguese Liga.
Bulgaria's Berbatov Signs 1-Year Contract Extension with AS Monaco
Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov has signed a one-year extension of his contract with French Ligue 1 club AS
Monaco.
Berbatov joined the French football club from Fulham in January under a contract expiring at the end of the
season.
However, his excellent performance from the past few months convinced the management of the football club
that he had to get a contract extension.

  • 6. TIMMINT Market Intelligence FOOTBALL WEEKLY REVIEW 13-19 of May, 2014 6 SECTION 2 - DEBATE OF THE WEEK Diego Costa set to Miss Champions League final against Real Madrid after Atletico Madrid confirm striker has torn hamstring. Who do you Think Will Win the UEFA Champions League Title this Season? Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa is set to miss the Champions League final against Real Madrid after tearing his hamstring in his side's 1-1 draw with Barcelona on Saturday. The Brazilian-born forward was forced off after just 15 minutes at the Nou Camp having pulled up following a burst into Barca's half. He had been struggling with a hamstring problem prior to the weekend title decider but was deemed fit enough to start for Diego Simeone's side. Tests on Monday have indicated that the 25-year-old's latest injury will likely keep him out of action for 15 days, causing him to miss Saturday's showpiece final in Lisbon against local rivals Real. Atletico tweeted that the striker, who has been included in Spain's World Cup squad, had suffered a grade one tear. He should be fit in time to keep his place in Vicente del Bosque's plans for Brazil. Despite the severity of his injury, Simeone has not yet given up hope of having Costa available this weekend. He said: 'We will work for have Diego Costa available on Saturday, but it’s really difficult. 'There are several days to go and we are not going to predict now, so soon before such an important match. He is an important player but he needs to be ready.' Atletico are in the final stages of a historic season but the intensity of the campaign has taken its toll and Arda Turan is also a doubt for the final with a pelvic injury. 'We will wait to see how Arda and Costa are by the end of the week. Given the situation that they are not ready then we will look for alternatives,' Simeone said. The Argentine said that the team are now fully concentrated on the final with Real after their league triumph. 'It is always better to win and improve the morale of the players and the people. While we have celebrated we have to now turn the page and we have several days to work hard knowing that we will face strong rivals,' Simeone said. 'I would say that we have a 50 percent chance in the game. They have better individual players but we are a team. We have plenty of motivation and they will have plenty as well which means that it will be an equal match with the key in the middle of the pitch.' Atletico have met Real on four occasions this season with a win and a draw in the league but they lost both legs of their King's Cup semi-final tie. Source: dailymail.co.uk

  • 9. TIMMINT Market Intelligence FOOTBALL WEEKLY REVIEW 13-19 of May, 2014 9 News in the Highlights Arsenal Win FA Cup to End Nine-Year Trophy Wait An extra-time winner from Aaron Ramsey has given Arsenal their first title in nine-years after beating Hull City 3-2 in the FA Cup final. Steve Bruce's Hull took the lead after just three minutes when Tom Huddlestone struck a sweet volley which was flicked in by James Chester. Arsenal were shocked and before they could get a hold of the game, Hull struck again when Alex Bruce saw his effort hit the post, only for Curtis Davies to top home a second in eight minutes. Bruce then almost made it three seconds later when his header beat everyone except for Kieran Gibbs, who headed off the line. Spanish midfielder Santi Cazorla then curled in a superb effort past Hull keeper Allan McGregor after 17 minutes. The second half saw Arsenal come out strongly with Mikel Arteta twice testing McGregor but the Scottish keeper stood tall to deny the North Londoners. However, he was helpless when French defender Laurent Koscielny prodded home following a cross from Santi Cazorla. The game would then head to extra time with neither side able to score in the 90 allocated minutes. A goalless first half of extra time saw youngster Yaya Sanogo come close, whilst Olivier Giroud also had a chance but he was blocked by the tireless Davies and Bruce. Arsene Wenger hauled Tomas Rosicky and Jack Wilshere on at the break and it has some impact, prompting a superb move that led to Aaron Ramsey's goal to put the Gunners 3-2 up. Yaya Sanogo continued to force McGregor into important saves but as the clock wore on, Hull looked increasingly tired and the referee blew full-time to end Arsenal's nine-year wait without a trophy. Man City Consider Move for Everton Star Manchester City could be lining up a summer bid for Everton left-back Leighton Baines, [football] direct news understands. The Premier League champions are under pressure to bring in English players this summer due to their recent penalty from Uefa for breaching Financial Fair Play rules, and need to increase the number of 'homegrown' players in their squad. Luis Suarez happy at Liverpool Recently crowned PFA and Football Writers' Player of the Year, Luis Suarez, has insisted he is as happy as he has been in his career at Liverpool, despite disappointment in the Premier League title race. Liverpool narrowly missed out on the Premier League title on the final day of the season, with a win over Newcastle not being enough to snatch the trophy away from Manchester City. Liverpool Ready to Pay 12m€ to German Middfielder Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is keen to replace Lucas Leiva and add fresh legs to his midfield this summer and it is understood that the Northern Irish boss is a big admirer of Emre Can. Can, has been impresing in the Bundesliga this season for Bayer Levekusen and can play at either left-back, centre midfield or in attacking midfield, making him a big signing if the Anfield boss can secure his signature. However, it is understood that Pep Guardiola is not interested, allowing Liverpool to submit their planned £12m bid in the coming days. Cole bids farewell to Chelsea The 33-year-old is out of contract this summer following eight years at Stamford Bridge. The left-back, who retired from international football after being left out of England's World Cup squad, said on Twitter: "I am weighing up my options for playing next season with my agent and sadly it does not look like chelsea will be one of them. 'Disrespected' Toure wants to leave Manchester City "Bitterly upset" Yaya Toure wants to quit Manchester City; Ryan Giggs will become Manchester United manager in three years; and Ashley Cole will definitely leave Chelsea this summer - the main stories making headline in this morning's newspapers. Manchester City laugh all the way to the bank after Uefa fine Moneybags Manchester City have been fined £48.8million and handed a reduction in their Champions League squad for next season from 25 to 21 players for breaching Uefa's financial fair play rules. But the world's richest football club will have £32.5m of the fine returned if the Premier League champions comply with spending controls agreed with Uefa so, by their standards, this is a mere slap on the wrist.

  • 14. TIMMINT Market Intelligence FOOTBALL WEEKLY REVIEW 13-19 of May, 2014 14 News in the Highlights Atletico Madrid win La Liga title Atletico Madrid claimed their 10th Spanish league crown on Saturday, May 17, 2014, but first in 18 years after coming from behind to draw 1-1 away at title rivals Barcelona. Alexis Sanchez's stunning strike fired Barca into the lead on 33 minutes, but Diego Godin's header four minutes into the second-half was enough to give Atletico the point they needed to become the first side other than Barca and Real Madrid to win La Liga in 10 years. A point for both sides means that Barca finish the season ahead of third-placed Real Madrid thanks to a better head-to-head record, three points adrift of Atletico. "There is an enormous feeling of happiness that you cannot explain," said Atletico boss Diego Simeone. Source: Eurosport Atletico's Costa set to miss Lisbon final, could also miss W.C. The Atletico Madrid forward pulled up after only 15 minutes in their 1-1 draw with Barcelona at the weekend. The club will determine the full extent of the injury later on Monday, but there is pessimism from the Spanish Federation, who believe that the goalscorer has in fact pulled his hamstring. If that is the case, then it is unlikely that he will be fit in time for La Roja’s first match of the tournament on June 13 against Netherlands. The paper quotes an unnamed member of the national team’s coaching staff, who insists: “We have to wait for the report from the medical staff, but it doesn’t look good. “The problem is more serious because it’s a recurrence of an injury in an area that had already been damaged. We have to wait, but we also have to have an alternative plan.” Source: eurosport.yahoo.com

  • 24. TIMMINT Market Intelligence FOOTBALL WEEKLY REVIEW 13-19 of May, 2014 24 News in the Highlights Controversy as Pep's Bayern win Cup in extra-time Two goals in the second-half of extra time secured Bayern Munich’s 17th DFB Pokal at the expense of Borussia Dortmund and a double for Pep Guardiola in his first season in Germany. Mats Hummels thought he had edged Dortmund ahead in the second-half only for the officials to adjudge his header had not crossed the line. Replays suggested that the ball was over the line before Dante hacked clear. Arjen Robben finally broke the deadlock deep into extra time, scoring his third German Cup final goal – only Gerd Muller and Uwe Seeler have scored more – to put some shine on a largely disappointing showpiece event. And in the 123rd minute Thomas Mueller made it 2-0, stumbling through the Dortmund defence to round Roman Weidenfeller and finish the season with the German championship and domestic cup in the bag. Pep Guardiola' side lined up with an experimental 3-5-2 formation that included space for 18-year-old Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg as a right-sided wing-back. But the three-man backline, consisting of Dante, Javi Martinez and Jerome Boateng, rarely faced up to any intensive testing from Dortmund who were insipid in the final third. Robben was deployed as the most advanced Bayern Munich attacking player, and he was a dangerous route to goal in the opening exchanges. Source: eurosport.yahoo.com

Schweinsteiger injuries worry Germany Midfield general Bastian Schweinsteiger left Bayern Munich's final Bundesliga match of the season with a knee injury giving Germany fans another scare ahead of the World Cup. Germany desperately need Schweinsteiger to be fit for the Brazil campaign, but it has been a season of many absences. And noone is giving a guarantee that he will be fit to start the Brazil campaign. Wolfsburg bid €30m for Destro German club Wolfsburg have reportedly offered €30m for Roma and Italy striker Mattia Destro. The hitman recovered from a serious knee injury to net 13 goals in 19 Serie A games this season, earning a place in the provisional World Cup squad. Goalline technology back in focus after controversial final Dortmund were confident they had scored against champions Bayern when Mats Hummels headed onto goal in the 64th minute and defender Dante cleared the ball near the line with the score at 0-0. Television replays showed both Dante's leg and the ball, even further behind in goal, were clearly over the line. Instead it was Bayern who struck twice in extra-time to lift the trophy and complete the domestic double. Hamburg cling to top flight place on away goals Former European champions Hamburg retained their place in Germany's top flight after coming out on top against second division Gruether Fuerth thanks to their away goal in the 1-1 second-leg playoff draw on Sunday. The three-time Bundesliga winners, the only club never to have been relegated since the creation of the Bundesliga in 1963, got the golden goal through forward Pierre-Michel Lasogga in the 14th minute after the goalless first leg on Thursday. Guardiola: Four titles not bad in 'toughest' first year Former Barcelona coach Guardiola had a tough act to follow when he took over this season following Bayern's treble-winning campaign under former coach Jupp Heynckes. "This was a very difficult year for me, my first in Germany. So four titles is good," he said after their 2-0 Cup win over Dortmund. Mandzukic set to leave Bayern after Cup final snub The Croatian striker's future at the club now appears to be in serious doubt with Robert Lewandowski joining the club in the summer on a free transfer from Saturday's opponents. Pep Guardiola confirmed the 27-year-old had been injured recently but that was not why he was left out of the squad.

  • 29. TIMMINT Market Intelligence FOOTBALL WEEKLY REVIEW 13-19 of May, 2014 29 News in the Highlights Sochaux relegated, Lille clinch Champions League spot Sochaux lost their final-day decider against Evian 3-0 and suffered relegation from Ligue 1 on Saturday. Herve Renard’s men, who had secured survival on the last day in each of the last two seasons, went into the game needing a win to complete a dramatic escape for the third consecutive year. However, Sochaux could not deliver the goods this time around as Evian sealed safety thanks to a Daniel Wass double and a strike from centre-back Aldo Angoula. At the other end of the table Lillesecured a place in next season’s UEFA Champions League by coming from behind to beat Lorient 4-1. PSG boss Al-Khelaifi defiant despite UEFA sanctions "The players that I want, I'll have them," Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi insisted Saturday, telling AFP that UEFA's financial fair play sanctions would not effect his team next season. UEFA on Friday fined PSG 60 million euros ($82 million, £49 million) and capped their Champions League squad to 21 for falling foul of financial fair play rules. Mandanda taken for scans after head injury France international goalkeeper Steve Mandanda was taken to hospital for tests after suffering a head injury during Marseille's home match against Guingamp on Saturday, his Ligue 1 club said. Mandanda, who has been named in coach Didier Deschamps' 23-man squad for the 2014 World Cup finals, was stretchered off during the first half of Marseille's final game of the Ligue 1 season after he was caught by the knee of Guingamp striker Mustapha Yatabare at the Stade Velodrome. Bordeaux Admit Zidane Interest Bordeaux’s majority shareholder has admitted that Zinedine Zidane would be an ‘incredible option’. The Ligue 1 outfit have been heavily linked with a move for the Real Madrid assistant, with several reports suggesting that they will approach the former midfielder with the chance to take his first managerial role. And for the first time, someone at the club has conceded that the World Cup-winner is an option for them. Leonardo Jardim poised to replace Claudio Ranieri as Monaco coach Monaco appear poised to replace coach Claudio Ranieri with Leonardo Jardim following the club's final game of the season on Saturday. Following promotion from Ligue 2 at the end of last season, Ranieri has guided Monaco to a guaranteed second place in the top flight behind Paris Saint-Germain, and with it Champions League football next season. Reports in Portugal and France, however, are suggesting Jardim has signed a two-year deal with Monaco after just one year in charge of Sporting Lisbon, who finished runner-up to Benfica in the Portuguese Liga. Bulgaria's Berbatov Signs 1-Year Contract Extension with AS Monaco Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov has signed a one-year extension of his contract with French Ligue 1 club AS Monaco. Berbatov joined the French football club from Fulham in January under a contract expiring at the end of the season. However, his excellent performance from the past few months convinced the management of the football club that he had to get a contract extension.
