1. TLC Reflection Paper
By joining the TLC program in the fall 2016 semester I have experienced and learned about
many different aspects of leadership. Furthermore, I have developed and created my own picture
of what leadership is to me and what kind of leader I would like to become in my future career.
Personally, I have always seen myself as a leader. When doing group work I have always
been the one taking responsibility for the group, delegated the different tasks to group members,
and made sure that the product handed in was completed, flawless, and well-done, if that meant I
had to do most of the work myself. I have always liked being in charge, in control and getting
things done the way I wanted it to, and it has always been a professional goal of mine to become
a future leader. The TLC program made me realize that there is more to being a leader than just
having a perfect product at the end. The work process of communicating with group members,
handling potential conflicts, and listening to each other in a proper way is just as important as the
product itself. Throughout the program I have developed great listening techniques such as
mirroring and how to listen mindfully, but also learned how to communicate important messages
the right way as a leader when it is necessary and without using micro-aggressions. The
M:POWR Mural Project also allowed me to explore how to communicate with people being
different from yourself, and therefore was a great opportunity of testing the different listening
and communication techniques I have gained from the workshops.
Furthermore, the TLC program opened my eyes on my personal appearance both in real
life and online. It is important to act and be professional in order for people to take you seriously
and achieve success. Even in my current GEO class I have started to keep in mind how I look,
and act professionally when presenting speeches since it affects the audience’s overall
2. impression of me.
One of my SMART Goals during the program was to attend at least four mountain shadows
mural project days within the fall 2016 semester. Before attending the project I was nervous and
anxious on how to handle the people with disabilities since I haven’t experienced it on a personal
level myself. Coming there gave me a new impression on how to communicate with people
being different than me and gave me a chance to challenge myself by experiencing diversity and
different people. I definitely gained a lot from this project both personally and professionally and
achieved my SMART Goal.
My second SMART Goal was to identify 3-5 major pathways I may be interested in
pursuing. Since it is my gap year I don’t have a major yet and the main idea of coming to
CSUSM to study for the semester was to try different classes out to see what interested me. The
MBTI TypeFocus has made me think about my future career and what kind of education that
would be a good fit for my personality. Since I first of all prefer ‘extroversion’ I would have to
find a career pathway where I can communicate with people on a daily basis. At the same time I
prefer ‘thinking’ which makes me think I should choose a career path where I would use my
logical sense as well. Majors I have considered to begin studying later on are therefore nursing or
criminal justice. The TLC made me consider future majors which means I have made progress
toward achieving my SMART Goal.
Besides from doing the M:POWR Mural Project as a part of my campus and civic
engagement I have participated in a lot of international events on campus. These events have
taught me about cultural diversity and how to communicate effectively with people of a different
3. culture or spoken language to me. It has been a great way of meeting new people and learning
about cultures and diversity from a first-hand perspective. Like the M:POWR Mural Project the
campus events also gave me a chance to try some of the listening and communication techniques
that I have learned in the different TLC workshops out by communicating with people being
different from me.
