3. About Elderhostel, Inc

A not-for-profit organization committed to
lifelong learning, Elderhostel, Inc., developed
a series of travel programs with the
collaboration of a university administrator and
a globetrotting social activist. Based on the
youth hostel concept, the programs, named
Road Scholar, provide retirees with travel
learning opportunities, as well as
comfortable, safe, and affordable lodging
around the world. Currently, Elderhostel
programs take place in 150 countries, with
travelers lodging in affordable
hotels, inns, and even luxury
accommodations.

4. Conclusion

When Elderhostel launched in
1975, higher education institutions in
New Hampshire offered the initial
Elderhostel programs to 220 retired
participants. By 1980, the number of
participants jumped to 20,000, who
attended programs in every U.S. state
and in Canada. Participants in the first
Elderhostel international programs in
1981 traveled to
Mexico, Scandinavia, and Great Britain.
Learning opportunities include immersion
in culture, field trips, and lectures.
