This fellowship proposal aims to analyze disconnects between disaster risk reduction (DRR) policies and implementation. The fellow will research DRR initiatives in Hong Kong, the US, Nepal, and the Philippines to identify both barriers to action and successful strategies. By evaluating community impacts and attending leadership events, the fellow seeks to develop recommendations to enable policies like the Hyogo Framework for Action 2 to be applied globally and increase resilience across nations.
NGO Fellowship proposal for disaster preparedness research
1. NGO Fellowship proposal
There is a disconnect between the recommendations from the Hyogo Frame for Action 2 (HFA2) and
actionable steps for schools, companies and communities, both in developed and developed
countries. The proposed disaster preparedness related project will involve analysis of hindrances as
well as effective actions of DRR in urban contexts (Hong Kong and the United States), as well as in
developing contexts (Nepal/the Philippines).
The aim of analysing causes of inaction, as well as the rationale behind why certain actions have
been successful, is to develop recommendations for future tools, to enable the lofty HFA2 policies to
be implemented across a range of nations for the increased resilience of our globe as a whole.
I will be working alongside the Crossroads Foundation in Hong Kong, which works across multi-
sectors, in multiple nations, and brings together those in need and those who can help through
practical learning of understanding Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and global engagement
connecting non-governmental organisations with corporate sector and educational institutions.
Proposed Budget to be supported by the Fellowship.
1. Through interviews and collaborative studies, I will research, assess and evaluate existing
DRR awareness and initiatives within Hong Kong and the United States, making particular
note of causes for inaction.
2. Conduct field visits to Nepal and the Philippines, evaluating community-based DRR
awareness and readiness, to explore commonalities of successful initiatives, and derive
principles for further initiatives, both in developing as well as developed nations.
3. Monitor, assess and evaluate the impact of the received goods in Nepal (2x20ft containers)
to the community. (In case the containers are still stuck, refer to negative impact).
4. Participate in the University Scholars Leadership Symposium Hanoi 2016, Vietnam
from 02nd
to 06th
August 2016. This symposium will provide a unique opportunity for
global networking with like-minded professionals across the world, as a basis to
explore future collaborations for DRR messaging.
5. Participate in training courses offered by HKJCDPRI and CCOUC both in Hong Kong
and in the UK.
6. Coventry University module of Technology for Disaster and Emergency Management
in 08th
– 12th
February 2016.
7. Present a list of findings, highlighting causes of inaction as well as correlating
suggested strategies to address them, for application across both urban and
developing contexts.
