- Laws, bookkeeping, tax systems, long hours, low pay\n
- Enjoyed every single minute. Your first day might be the longest, but it seems the shortest. And it stays that way. You can improve.\n
- Books & blogs are great, but you learn by doing. The written word is theory, abstract.\n
- work at night, work on weekends, work part time,... minimize your risks\n
- You can’t combine jobs for too long. Strain on friends & family. Most important: You need to focus. Where do you want to be in 2 years?\n
- You can’t charge what veterans are charging (Frisomat). But don’t under price (Telenet). Think long and hard, this is really, really important. Also, if you’re developing an app: Free is not a business plan.\n
- Our first customer relationship went under due to bad communication. We weren’t communicating effectively. Even if your work is great, if communication is bad your work is bad.\n
- First customers came through our network. We are break even thanks to our network.\n
- Happy customers talk. Happy customers lead to new customers. All (except our first) customers led to more customers.\n
- Get a great accountant. Get some fiscal advice. Unless you get great financial advice, it can seem like you’re punished for not being an employee. Do all of this in advance.\n
- Competition isn’t about running eachother out of business. Competition is about pushing eachother further. Think about the railroads, think about the postal services, telecom... If you’re not pushed, you’re content. If you’re content, you’re customers aren’t happy.\n
