1. How different countries celebrate Christmas
Christmas is a holiday that Christians celebrate because the birth of Jesus.
Many countries in the world celebrates Christmas and here is how some of them
celebrates it.
1: Sweden
Christmas Day in Sweden is celebrated on December 24th, that day you spend with
your family, and you eat food and have fun together and then later in the evening Santa
Claus comes and gives gifts to everyone.
In sweden we have many things that we do that i dont think other countries have. we
have the christmas stocking that kids get a little gift in everyday from 1 december to
24th december, we also have the chocolate calender that you open everyday and get a
piece of chocolate.
We also have a celebration every year on the 13th december called Lucia. Lucia was a
girl that went with canddles in her hair, and now we celebrate that every year by going
the “Lucia tåg” and singing.
In swedish we say “Jultomten” for Santa claus.
2. 2: India
Christmas is a very small festival due to that there is only 2,3% Christians there.
Midnight mass is a very important service for Christians in India and especially
Catholics, the churches are also decorated with flowers and candles for the Christmas
Eve midnight mass service.
Instead of having a traditional Christmas tree they often use a banana or mango tree or
whatever tree they can find, and sometimes they use mango leaves to decorate their
homes.
In hindi they call Santa claus christmas baba.
3. Egypt
3. In egypt there is about 15% christians, and they celebrate christmas day on the 7th
January.
43 days before christmas, from 25th November to 6th January they have a special fast
called “The holy nativity fast” where they basically eat a vegan diet and that means they
dont eat anything that comes from animals (including chicken, beef, milk and eggs).
On christmas eve (6th January) christians goes to church for a special liturgy or service.
the services usally start around 10:30pm but family and friends like to come earlier to
meet each other. The services finish around midnight but some can still go on until
4:00am.
After the service the people go home to eat the big christmas meal that involves much
meat. One thing they ofter eat is “Fata” and that is a lamb soup that contains bread, rice
and boiled lamb meat.
On christmas day (7th January) people get together in homes for parties and activities,
and people often bring “kahk” (special sweet biscuits) with them as gifts.
In egypt they call Santa claus Baba Noel.
4: Australia
In Austalia christmas comes in the beginning of the summer holidays that is from the
middle of December to early Febuari so some people may even be camping at
christmas, because christmas in Australia is very hot.
People hang wreaths on their doors and sometimes they go out for christmas caroling,
people decorate their houses and gardens with christmas trees and christmas lights and
then the neighbors often come to watch the lights together and they also have a little
competion about who has the best lights.
4. Christmas song are very important in Australia, they have different celebraties coming
and helping the people sing different christmas carols that sents live around Australia.
On boxing day most people go and visit their friends and have barbecues on the beach.
In Australia they have a famous yacht race from sydney to hobart in Tasmania and that
is also held on the boxing day.
Most families try to be together on christmas and if its not possible they can send
christmas greeting over the radio. On christmas the people often eat barbecue or
seafood.
5: Ireland
In Ireland they celebrate christmas in much the same way as the UK and USA. but they
also have their own christmas traditions.
