For more than 15 years, Lakeside
Plastics employees have continuously shown
that they care about their community.
What started as a modest Christmas
Donation Program at the plant in
1997 has grown to a very generous
gift giving adventure where, for six
years now, the Windsor Downtown
Mission has been represented as the
“Charity of Choice” for employees at
Lakeside Plastics Limited.
During this time, all employees
at the plant in Oldcastle, Ontario have
participated in many different fund-raising
events that have accumulated to almost
$20,000 being raised for the Downtown
Mission, and its services to the less fortunate
in Windsor and the surrounding area.
Thank God and The MissionSince the inception of the Sanctuary
program in November 2006 thousands of
homeless men and women have passed
through our doors.
In the beginning the average occupancy
was eight people per night. Skip ahead to
the present the new average is a staggering
eighteen individuals. The program is in such
high demand that those seeking shelter from
the elements know to arrive early in the
evening to ensure a spot on our floor. Yes,
our guests are required to sleep on the floor,
we do provide them with a nice mattress,
a fresh pillow, blankets and other linens.
Certainly it is not deluxe accommodations,
but said one unidentified guest “it is climate
controlled and safer than the streets”.
Meet Sam (real name withheld on
request) Sam is a gentleman that recently
found himself in need of the Mission
services. A slight man, early sixties, he and
his wife immigrated here twenty two years
ago, escaping the wars so prevalent in the
Middle East. Sam has been living in Canada
over 20 years, he and his wife raised their
three children here, and he is very quick
and proud to point out that all three of his
children are University educated and are
working in a professional capacity. One is a
Doctor, the other just passed the Bar exam
and the youngest is an engineer.

Employees participate in monthly “Dress
Down Days” where each participating
employee donates $5.00 for the opportunity
to take part in a “Dress Down Friday” on
the last Friday of each month. In addition,
employees at the plant raise money by
holding bake sales, chilli/soup days, hot dog,
sausage and hamburger days for employees,
and various ticket sales and raffles for
sporting events where tickets are donated
by various vendors and suppliers and later
sold off as a raffle for this worthwhile cause.
In 2010, the Fund-raising committee raised
over $1,500.00 selling cookbooks featuring
recipes created and submitted by employees.
In 2010, The Windsor Star featured
Lakeside Plastics and its employees, led by
its very own Fund-Raising Committee, when
the largest cheque in the Company’s history,
a cheque for $8,000, was donated on behalf
of its employees. So far, for this year alone,
$4,000 in accumulated donations were made
by employees and the amount was matched
by the Company.
On July 7, 2010, Kay Punter a long-time
supporter of the Downtown Mission and
one of the Mission’s highly motivated and
dedicated volunteers (now retired) and Mary
Jo Kovacs, Mission Food Room Supervisor
went to the plant to collect the donation.
Since then, and over the years, the Company
has maintained its close ties with Mission
staff.
Future events that are planned by the
Company and its Fund Raising Committee
will include dates to be set aside for members
of the plant’s Senior Leadership Team to
participate in both preparing and serving a
meal for an upcoming Mission luncheon.
Lakeside Plastics employees are very
proud of their long history of gift giving,
and look forward to an even longer lasting
relationship with this great partner in the
Windsor and surrounding area.

Sam and his wife ran into financial
difficulties, which as we can all imagine
strained the marriage. So much so, that the
marriage of thirty seven years is over. Sam
credits his faith in God as the reason that
he has been able to deal with the extremely
difficultsituationinwhichnowfindshimself.
Sam also was very thankful for the Mission.
He stated that “he never imagined when he
was donating to the Mission that he himself
would someday have to rely on our services”.
He is confident and faithful that his situation
is temporary. The Mission is here to help him
for as long as he needs, thanks to the many
donors who support our work. “Thank God
and the Mission” were Sam’s parting words
as we ended our fist encounter.

the Downtown Mission
The crew of Lakeside Plastics at a BBQ
event
Have you been to the Mission lately, well an average of two
hundred men, women and children call the Mission home for at least
a few hours each day. The Mission’s doors open for regular services
Monday to Friday at 8:30 a.m. and a familiar group of faces come
streaming in. Card games, Cribbage boards, crossword puzzles and
the buzz of chit chat take over the quiet room.
Thanks to our many donors the Dining room that is the heart
and soul of the Mission has been remodelled to some extent. Last
year our good friends at the Walker Rd. Home Depot donated paint
and people to give us a fresh new look. In addition to that, the old
tile floor was replaced with a nice new ceramic floor. It is modern
looking and easier to keep clean, the new ceramic floor even provides
a yearly cost savings in reduced maintenance cost.
“Saving-Seats” a new fundraising opportunity has been created
to help fund the replacement of our chairs. Imagine sitting down to
socialize or have lunch on a chair that in some instances is about
twenty plus years old. Roy Bull a dedicated volunteer at the Mission
has been volunteering to repair the old chairs for some time now.
“The problem is that the metal can’t be welded anymore” stated Roy.
He has been successful in repairing chair cushions and backs but the
metal components of the chairs have been fatigued to the maximum.
In walks the Kennedy family. In memory of Mr. Alan Kennedy
who passed away four years ago the family host a yearly golf
tournament. Mr. Kennedy’s children wanted this years proceeds to go
to the Mission. Thanks to their generosity and designated donation,
100 new chairs will be purchased. A special thanks for Allan’s wife
and children for helping us in such a wonderful way. We are truly
blessed to have such loving supporters.
Our new fundraiser “Saving-Seats” allows donors to purchase
a chair for $50.00 and have it labelled in memory or in honour of
someone special. To get involved contact the Mission (519) 973-5573

We are so thankful to all of those in-
dividuals, clubs, businesses and church
groups that have so graciously donated
those unwanted Pennies to us.
There are those who believe that the
Penny is useless, some call it a throwaway,
a cast off. Well we at the Mission beg to dif-
fer, thanks to all of you we have collected
nearly $7000.00 in our Pennies for Hope
campaign. That is approximately 2357 hot
lunches paid for. A wonderful nutritious
lunch that someone may not have had if not
for that simple penny.
We are not done, there are still sofa
cushions out there that have not been turned
over, junk drawers yet to be emptied and car
ashtrays just screaming out to be donated.
Just a reminder, no need to roll, just bring
them for the Mission and our wonderful
volunteers will handle the rest. Keep them
coming and again Thank You.

Thanks to our many donors the Dining room that is the heart and soul of the Mission has been remodelled to some extent. Last year our good friends at the Walker Rd. Home Depot donated paint and people to give us a fresh new look. In addition to that, the old tile floor was replaced with a nice new ceramic floor. It is modern looking and easier to keep clean, the new ceramic floor even provides a yearly cost savings in reduced maintenance cost. “Saving-Seats” a new fundraising opportunity has been created to help fund the replacement of our chairs. Imagine sitting down to socialize or have lunch on a chair that in some instances is about twenty plus years old. Roy Bull a dedicated volunteer at the Mission has been volunteering to repair the old chairs for some time now. “The problem is that the metal can’t be welded anymore” stated Roy. He has been successful in repairing chair cushions and backs but the metal components of the chairs have been fatigued to the maximum. In walks the Kennedy family. In memory of Mr. Alan Kennedy who passed away four years ago the family host a yearly golf tournament. Mr. Kennedy’s children wanted this years proceeds to go to the Mission. Thanks to their generosity and designated donation, 100 new chairs will be purchased. A special thanks for Allan’s wife and children for helping us in such a wonderful way. We are truly blessed to have such loving supporters. Our new fundraiser “Saving-Seats” allows donors to purchase a chair for $50.00 and have it labelled in memory or in honour of someone special. • 4. We are so thankful to all of those in- dividuals, clubs, businesses and church groups that have so graciously donated those unwanted Pennies to us. There are those who believe that the Penny is useless, some call it a throwaway, a cast off. Well we at the Mission beg to dif- fer, thanks to all of you we have collected nearly $7000.00 in our Pennies for Hope campaign. That is approximately 2357 hot lunches paid for. A wonderful nutritious lunch that someone may not have had if not for that simple penny. We are not done, there are still sofa cushions out there that have not been turned over, junk drawers yet to be emptied and car ashtrays just screaming out to be donated. Just a reminder, no need to roll, just bring them for the Mission and our wonderful volunteers will handle the rest. Keep them coming and again Thank You.
