These slides use ideas from my (Jeff Funk) class to develop a business model for printable battery technology. The increasing use of wearable electronics such as Google Glasses and “electronic tattoos” has increased the demand for smaller batteries that can be added to these glasses or tattoos. Based on Zinc, these batteries can be printed onto a thin substrate. These slides describe the customers for this technology and the value propositions for these customers, along with other aspects of a business model.

The production of polysilicon, ingots, wafers, PV cells and modules have been growing with the growth of the PV market. The gap between manufacturing capacity of PV module and the demand contributed to the recent price reduction thus resulted in lower LCOE of PV power. Across the value chain, the PV upstream sector makes efforts to improve efficiency, output and reliability. Further progress of cost reduction is expected. These slides use concepts from my (Jeff Funk) course on Business Models at National University of Singapore to analyze the business model for a fictitious alliance between Qualcomm and Bosch. Together, these firms can create a dense network of wireless charging stations that can enable the use of inexpensive electric vehicles. The dense network of charging stations reduces the importance of range and thus the weight, volume, and cost of batteries that are needed to propel the vehicle. The slides describe the value proposition, method of value capture, customers, scope of activities, and method of strategic control for Q-Bo, a fictitious alliance between Qualcomm and Bosch.

One obstacle to the energy industry’s tendency toward adopting renewable energy is the requirement for a monitoring system for energy transactions based on microgrids in the wheeling scheme (shared use of utility networks). The quantity of transaction expenses for each operational generator is not monitored in any case. In this project, a mobile phone application is developed and maintained to track the total amount of fees paid and received by all wheeling parties and the amount of electricity produced by the microgrid. In the wheeling case system research, the number of transaction costs, such as network rental fees, loss costs, and profit margins, must be pretty calculated for all wheeling participants. The approach created in this study uses a blockchain system to execute transactions, and transactions can only take place if the wheeling actor and the generator have an existing contract. The application of energy trading is the main contribution of this research. The created application may track energy transfers and track how many fees each wheeling actor is required to receive or pay. Using a security system to monitor wheeling transactions will make energy trades transparent.

This paper is set against a backdrop where India is at an important juncture in the energy landscape – a present riddled with many challenges and an imminent future of multiple opportunities led by technology implementations. The paper begins by providing an overall context to the Indian Power scenario and introduces the country’s ambitious smart grids vision led by security, adaptability, sustainability, reliability and quality. In the next section, we delve deeper into the characteristics of the Indian Smart Energy ecosystem – exploring the market potential and opportunities as well as policies that are currently in place. The third segment is dedicated to standardization and an effort has been made to bring together all relevant standards (including IoT) as well as policies that enable their implementation. This segment also discusses cyber security and associated challenges, as these tenets are critical to the standards debate. The fourth segment explores opportunities and challenges that all these bring in the areas of renewable energy, transmission, distribution, micro-grids and security as well as their possible impact. In the final section, the paper puts forth some actionable recommendations for stakeholders in the energy ecosystem including calling for new policies around rooftop PVs, net metering, communications and IoT, data usage, distribution automation and management of distributed energy resources, schemes for incentivizing stakeholders as well as greater collaboration among ecosystem players. In doing so, it also highlights the benefits that collaborations such as those between India and EU could bring to accelerating both standards creation as well as implementation.

Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with.
