1. Adrenergic-Blocking Agents
These drugs bind to adrenergic receptors,
but inhibit or block stimulation
of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS)
Adrenergic Blocking Agents
Classified by the type of adrenergic receptor
they block
 Alpha1 blockers
 Alpha2 blockers
 Beta1 blockers (Specefic)
 Beta1 + beta2 blockers(Non specefic)

2. Therapeutic uses of alpha blockers
Alph1 blockers
Phenoxybenzamine(Irreversable)
prazocin,
terazocin,
doxazocin
Alfuzosin(Alpha1a blocker)
Uses
• hypertension.
• Benign prostatic hypertropy ( BPH)
• Note: Alph2 blocker yohimbin is used as sexual stimulant

3. Adverse effects of alph1 blockers
 Hypotension
 Orthstatic hypotension
 Note. Alfuzocin has less side effect
Nonspecific Beta Blockers
Beta blockers that block both beta1 and
beta2 receptors e.g
Propranolol,
Alpranolol,
 Oxpranolol,
Pindolol,
Labetolol.

4. Specific beta1
blockers( cardioselective)
They are
Atenolol,
Acebutolol,
 Metoprolol
Eesmolol
Eesm - olol
Aten - olol,

Acebu - tolol,

5. Beta Blockers
Therapeutic use
 Hypertension,
 angina,
 Myocardial infarction (MI),
 arrhythmia,
 migraine,
 anxiety,
 glaucoma( timolol),
 thyrotoxicosis,
 tremors.

6.  Contraindications:,
 Congestive cardiac failure (CCF),
 heart block,
 hypotension
 Bronchial asthma

7. Adverse effects of beta blockers
Bronchconstriction,
Arrhythmia ( when stopped abruptly),
mask the signs of hypoglycaemia in
insulin dependent Diabetes mellitus ,
fatigue
Depression (atenolol)
