Thank yous to all the attendees, to Michael for organising and to Edward for having us at Newspeak House
The first event was at the end of last year and we changed the format for this one based on what we learned
4 kinds of feedback: 1) if you want to give a talk at a future event; 2) if you want to hear a talk at a future event; 3) if you have a need or a gripe about data from Parliament; and 4) feedback on the event itself on the feedback sheets

High level conceptual diagram of the new data service which Dan talked through
This is a complete service, which includes the collaborative practices of the team, working in the open with users of Parliament’s data.
This is a map of the people we’ve been talking to and working with so far
This shows some of the detail to prove it’s not just made up

In October 2016 we commissioned this report by the Open Data Institute https://theodi.org/blog/achieving-more-with-open-data-at-dataparliamentuk
It is a useful starting point / frame for our work with users and continuing commitment to focusing on users’ needs for our data; we have made progress on this user research as a team since last year and will be publishing findings in due course
Dan said something about how he thought democracy was important. Also wanting to avoid any implicit ‘Parliament + Data = Democracy’ oversimplification, and recognising that there were many people more expert on democracy in the room.
This image of the Canadian rapper and media personality Drake was used to illustrate Dan’s career (such as it is). Like Drake, Dan ‘started from the bottom’ at Parliament https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RubBzkZzpUA and the image is of Drake in the video to ‘Hotline Bling’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxpDa-c-4Mc referencing the fact that Dan’s first role in Parliament was in the Telecoms team.
‘Government’ in quotes because let’s accept people don’t recognise the difference between Parliament and Government. Dan’s point was that he had spent a long time in this environment, it’s been difficult in the past 12 months in particular
This is what Twitter can feel like if you work in Government right now
This is paraphrased from the ODI report - recognising that by focusing on producing the best, authoritative raw materials from Parliament we can facilitate others to work effectively in more ‘political’ spaces
This is what the Data and Search team are trying to do
