Need for a new level of thinking?? <ul><li>Albert Einstein observed “The significant problems we face cannot be solved at the same Level of thinking we were at, When we created them.. </li></ul><ul><li>The problems cannot be solved at the superficial level we see them. We need a deeper level of thinking. This new level of thinking is what the 7 habits is about. </li></ul><ul><li>It is a principle-centered character-based inside-out approach to personal and interpersonal effectiveness. </li></ul>

P/PC BALANCE <ul><li>The Seven Habits are also called habits of effectiveness. </li></ul><ul><li>They are based on principles designed to bring long term benefits. </li></ul><ul><li>These are in harmony with the law called the “P/PC BALANCE” </li></ul><ul><li>P= Production PC= Production capacity </li></ul>P PC

Stages Of Maturity Continuum <ul><li>Dependence: The paradigm under which we are born, relying upon others to take care of us. </li></ul><ul><li>Independence: The paradigm under which we can make our own decisions and take care of ourselves. </li></ul><ul><li>Interdependence: The paradigm under which we cooperate to achieve something that cannot be achieved independently. </li></ul>

  8. 8. HABIT 1: BE PROACTIVE <ul><li>People are generally of 2 types : Proactive and reactive. </li></ul><ul><li>We are responsible for our own lives. Our behavior is a function of our decisions, not our conditions. </li></ul><ul><li>Responsibility (&quot;response-ability&quot;) the ability to choose your response according to various situations. </li></ul>
  9. 9. <ul><li>PROACTIVE </li></ul><ul><li>Driven by carefully thought about selected and internalized values. </li></ul><ul><li>Uses “idea building” phrases such as Let's look at our alternatives, I can choose a different approach, I control my own feelings, I can, I will, I prefer. </li></ul><ul><li>REACTIVE </li></ul><ul><li>Driven by feelings, by circumstances, by conditions, by their environment. </li></ul><ul><li>Uses “Idea killing” phrases like There's nothing I can do. That's just the way I am. He makes me so mad. They won't allow that. I have to do that. I can't. I must. If only </li></ul>

HABIT 2: BEGIN WITH END IN MIND <ul><li>Begin with the End in Mind means to begin each day, task, or project with a clear vision of your desired direction and destination, and then continue by flexing your proactive muscles to make things happen. </li></ul><ul><li>Based on the principle that all things are created twice: first initial blueprint and then the final product. </li></ul>

A Personal Mission Statement <ul><li>The most effective way to practice Begin with the End in Mind is to develop a Personal Mission Statement. </li></ul><ul><li>It focuses on What you want to be, What you want to do and on the values or principles upon which being and doing are based. </li></ul><ul><li>Personal mission statement begins at the very center of our Circle of Influence, whatever is there becomes the source of our security, guidance, wisdom and power. </li></ul>

Our Brain - An analysis <ul><li>The left hemisphere - the more logical/verbal </li></ul><ul><li>The right hemisphere- the more intuitive and creative one. </li></ul><ul><li>Although, today’s world concentrates more on the left hemisphere but ideally a person must be trained to use both these sides of the brain. </li></ul><ul><li>Two Ways to Tap the Right Brain: </li></ul><ul><li>(1)Expand Perspective </li></ul><ul><li>(2) Visualization and Affirmation </li></ul>

Habit 3: Put First Things First <ul><li>“ Things which matter most must never be at the mercy of things which matter least ” – Goeth </li></ul><ul><li>The key to time management is to schedule your priorities. </li></ul><ul><li>Its effective self-management </li></ul><ul><li>This habit is very effective where Habits 1 and 2 come together. </li></ul>
  15. 15. Time Management <ul><li>Focusing on Quadrant I , it keeps getting bigger and bigger. </li></ul><ul><li>Quadrant II is the heart of effective personal management. </li></ul><ul><li>Effective people keep out of III and I V (Urgent or not, they are not important). </li></ul>
  16. 16. PUBLIC VICTORY <ul><li>HABIT 4: Think Win-Win </li></ul><ul><li>HABIT 5: Seek First to understand, Then to Be Understood </li></ul><ul><li>HABIT 6: Synergize </li></ul>

PUBLIC VICTORY <ul><li>Private victory precedes public victory. </li></ul><ul><li>Self-mastery and self-discipline are the foundation of good relationships with others. </li></ul><ul><li>The techniques and skills that really make a difference in human interaction are the ones that almost naturally flow from a truly independent character. </li></ul>

The Emotional Bank Account <ul><li>An Emotional Bank account is a metaphor that describes the amount of trust that's been built up in a relationship </li></ul><ul><li>The major deposits are </li></ul><ul><li>1) Understanding the Individual </li></ul><ul><li>2) Attending to the Little Things </li></ul><ul><li>3) Keeping Commitments </li></ul><ul><li>4) Clarifying Expectations </li></ul><ul><li>5) Showing Personal Integrity </li></ul><ul><li>6) Apologizing Sincerely When You Make a Withdrawal </li></ul>
  19. 19. HABIT 4: THINK WIN-WIN <ul><li>The paradigms of human interaction are win-lose, lose-win, lose-lose, win, and WIN-WIN or No Deal. </li></ul><ul><li>WIN-WIN is a frame of mind and heart that constantly seeks mutual benefit in all human interactions. </li></ul>
  20. 20. The five interdependent dimensions of life begins with our character and moves toward relationships. Agreements between parties are the results of these relationships. For win-win to work, the systems have to support it. And it involves process which is the route to win-win .
  21. 21. <ul><li>Win-Win attitude possesses three vital character traits: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Integrity: sticking with your true feelings, values, and commitments </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Maturity: expressing your ideas and feelings with courage and consideration for the ideas and feelings of others </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Abundance Mentality: believing there is plenty for everyone </li></ul></ul>
  22. 22. HABIT 5: Seek First to understand, Then to be Understood <ul><li>Communication is the most important skill in life. It is not merely about transfer of words or numbers from one individual to another but about understanding IDEAS . </li></ul><ul><li>For effective interaction with a person, to influence a person, we first need to understand the person. </li></ul><ul><li>We are trained to read, write and speak but listening is usually neglected. </li></ul><ul><li>“ Diagnose before you Prescribe”. </li></ul>

Four Autobiographical Responses <ul><li>Evaluating: Judging and then either agree or disagree. </li></ul><ul><li>Probing: Asking questions from your own frame of reference. </li></ul><ul><li>Advising: Giving counsel, advice, and solutions to problems. </li></ul><ul><li>Interpreting: analyzing other’s motives and behaviors based on your own experiences. </li></ul>

HABIT 6: Synergize <ul><li>“ The whole is greater than the sum of its parts”; (i.e. 1 + 1 > 2) </li></ul><ul><li>Synergy is the foundation for a Principle-Centered Leadership. </li></ul><ul><li>The challenge is to apply the principles of creative cooperation in our social interactions. </li></ul>

  26. 26. <ul><li>Synergistic third alternatives are often better for both parties than their original alternatives. </li></ul><ul><li>Valuing the various differences between people is the essence of synergy -- the mental, the emotional, the psychological differences between people. </li></ul><ul><li>Synergy can be seen everywhere in Nature. Ecology is a word which basically describes the synergism in nature </li></ul>

HABIT 7: Sharpening the saw <ul><li>Renewal is the principle and the process that empowers us to move on an upward spiral of growth and change, of continuous improvement. </li></ul><ul><li>The 7 th habit is about preserving and enhancing the greatest asset you have – “YOURSELF”. </li></ul><ul><li>Four Dimensions of Renewal are physical, spiritual, mental, and social/emotional. </li></ul>
