Is process control in the printing industry sufficient? In this presentation, which was presented at the RIT CMIC Summit, VIGC shows a number of bottlenecks in the current process control. Bottlenecks that should be solved, some of them certainly before we can move on to 'more exciting fields' like printed electronics, printed functionality, etc.

Color definition, communication • Color definition of e.g. brand colors should be rock solid, but current flow is flawed • How does a designer pick/communicate? – Tale from the Trenches: the Dutch architect – Tale from the Trenches: Artevelde College • 2 identical color guides (2006), 452 patches measured, deviations up to delta E*ab 9.46, average 2, 22% > 3… • 4 guides from different years (2003 > 2006), 56 patches measured, deviations up to delta E*ab 11.87, average 3.95… • Reaction Pantone (during Ipex 2010): “Our production tolerances are narrower than these figures, but I can not reveal the exact numbers.” 10/19/2014 © Cross-Media Innovation Center – RIT CMIC Summit 2014 7

- 16. Draft ISO 15339-1 (not approved) Different levels of tolerances is a good idea, but… newspapers need different tolerances from high end packaging IMO. And a ‘premium’ newspaper needs different tolerances from a ‘quick & dirty’ newspaper.

Conclusion • Color communication: we need a better (rock solid) system for brand colors • Measuring color: interinstrument agreement needs to improve, next to level of knowledge of all people in the industry • Color vision: we need a wide scale (global) insight in color vision, in color appreciation, in color tolerances, even for different product types 10/19/2014 © Cross-Media Innovation Center – RIT CMIC Summit 2014 29

Conclusion • Color evaluation: we need a methodology that reflects real life, the usage of the products in real life, not one that will make the life of a printer miserable • Process control: we need (better) control for ‘non color’ inks and other layers • Only then can we move on… 10/19/2014 © Cross-Media Innovation Center – RIT CMIC Summit 2014 30
