Nieuw aandacht voor het landschap
vanaf de jaren 1990 bij historisch-
geografen
nieuwe aandacht gevolg van
1/ postmodernisme, landschapsperceptie, antropologisch
2/ vernieuwde aandacht voor ecologie
3/ nog betere ‘contextualisering’ van archeologie
4/ vele nieuwe positief wetenschappelijke technieken
3. 3
Een oplossing? Meer verklarend onderzoek nodig.
Voorgestelde benadering:
Sociaal-Agrosystemische Landschapsanalyse
(SAL)
Basis van rurale landschappen = samenlevingsvorm
‘sociaal agro-systeem’
De sociaal- systemisch- regionale benadering die zoekt
naar de overlevingsmechanismen
(econom/cultureel/maatschappelijk)
= « sociaal-agro-systemisch »
benadering van het landschap: een regionaal- verklarende
benadering
Een regionale benadering van landschappen
=/= geen typologieën
=/= geen patronen
=/= geen vergelijking
4. 4
Wat met bestaande ‘regionale benaderingen’ van het
landschap?
- De ‘Annales’ benadering’:
+vernieuwend,koppeling leefwereld …
termijnstudie
5. 5
Sociaal agro-systeem=een regionaal, ruraal
overlevings-systeem waarin specifieke sociale
relaties de manier van produceren/overleven
bepalen.
m.a.w hoe organiseerden de bewoners van
een regio hun overleven
(noot: sociale relaties tussen boeren en met
andere betrokkenen)
6. Waarom waren overlevingsmechanismen regionaal in
ME-en en AR? (en dus ook de landschapsstructuren)?
• Path dependency: oorspronkelijk ‘feodale’
versnipperde organisatie EN regionale
ontginningsstrategieën blijven (ten dele)
doorleven in bezits- en machtstructuren
• Geografisch/bodemkundige-geologische
aspecten bepalen mee
ontginningsmogelijkheden en de ‘path
dependency’ die erop volgt
• Beperkte transportmogelijkheden, geen
mondialisering (zeker niet voor gewone
man)

15. Reasons for changes coastal and stability in
inland Flanders
– Changes in coastal Flanders caused by: environmental problems /
Changing propertuy structures/ lack of investments (peat compaction
and lowering of the surface level) / support governement ( path
dependency)/ peat extracted/ wages
– Inertion and even increase of in coastal Flanders caused by:
• Property structures stable
• towns demand for protoindustrial products
• Moving population
• Growing ‘convivium’ between larger and small farms_lower wages
– Inland Flanders: stabilty, and characteristics became more extreme

weinig markt; afgesloten berggebieden; goede common rules
regio’s, nieuwe feodale periode MT O-Europa?)
– 2a Met onvrijheid
– 2b Zonder onvrijheid
in Europa?):
kleine bedrijven (Grootste deel Binnen-Vlaanderen vanaf 12/13de
eeuw-19de eeuw?)
– 4b Commerciële overlevingseconomie met uitstluitend kleine
peasants – ondergang van het systeem
• 5.Commerciële bedrijfs(winst)economie: het bedrijf staat centraal
– (Kust-Vlaanderen vanaf 15de eeuw; Gelders rivieren,gebied vanaf 15-
16de eeuw, Holland 17de eeuw)

• Naar intensieve landbouw
• Grote versnippering percelen
• Enkele grote bedrijven en meerderheid kleine!
*variatie binnen binnen-Vlaanderen:
schaal
• Agrarisch ‘collectivisme’ verschillend
• Bodem toch verschillend
• Ontginningsdatum verschillend

Binnen-Vlaanderen:
Subregio Oudenaarde –Aalst tot
Brusselse (1)
• Beperkte hoeveelheid grote bedrijven maar wel grote
rol in samenwerking met meerderheid van kleine
bedrijven (sociale cohesie).
• Zandleem- leem; spitten niet steeds mogelijk
• Extremiseert in 17-18de
eeuw.
• Protoindustrie
centra (Karolingische hofkouters)

53. Kust-Vlaanderen
• Naar extensieve landbouw
• Grotere percelen of samengestelde groepen plus
concentratie rond hoeve
• Evolutie naar meer grote bedrijven met loonarbeiders;
kleine gaan ‘failliet’!
“Open
landschap” wordt regel. Maximale benutting van areaal
nodig voor commerciële landbouw. Geen laaghout ‘nodig’
Mogelijk wel meer hooghout
• Agrarisch ‘collectivisme’ verschillend. Bodem toch
verschillend- (licht) verschillende landschappen 53

Besluit…
-Landschappen ontstaan grotendeels uit
organisatie van ‘overleven’; toch heden nog weinig
relatie gelegd.
- Er is meer nood naar diepteonderzoek naar
regionale agro-systemische verschillen om
landschappen te ‘lezen’: een
Sociaal- Agrosystemische Landschapsbenadering
(SAL-benadering)
kan mogelijk ten dele soelaas brengen..
-Nieuw diepteonderzoek
is … teamwork en… geld
Notes de l'éditeur
The soil of a raised bed warms up faster. Also, excess soil moisture drains away from the bed. Overwatering is less of a problem. The growing medium may be improved or replaced easier. Soil compaction can be greatly reduced or eliminated. Watering and fertilization become more economical. Raised bed increases the effective use of your growing space.
-Also oldest openfields ‘kouters’ but mostly only hofkouters or mixed manorial kouters-village kouters But extension towards a patchwork with field system. However it was no Gewannflur with regular fields but a division Of the land made out of irregular small plots. Every ‘lap’ of the patchwork consisted out of several plots of different owners and was separated from the rest with a road, river, fosses, canals… (As the previous system) the system did NOT hinder inentsification siinec it was NOT a 3 field system. The peasants cultivating a ‘ lap’ agreed with the same type of cropcultivation ( winter crops, summer crops..) It is likely that the most important reason for that field system was the “collective” plowing of the lap by one Farmer who disposed of a team of horses which most peasants did not as statistics show! The ‘ convivium’ between large and small holdings was in these areas even more clear as in sandy Flanders, as Reinout Vermoesen could show in his book ‘Markttoegang en ‘commerciële’ netwerken’ of 2012 ( via a loan system and wage labour) Our earliest proofs go back to the 15 th century due to a lack of sources but since we know the same social structure it is more than likely that the same system happened from at least the 13 th . However, although the sandy area (t system 1) and the sandy loamy area ( system 2) developed towards a largely to compare social agrosystem based on a “convivium” between commercial peasants and some larger holdings, both areas developed towards largely different landscapes (a largely “bocage” landscape in 1 and an more open landscape in 2). Socail organisation adapted the landscape to its needs in the way the environment allowed.
