OPEN LETTER
3
Dear Sir/Madame,
Sustainable Development Club would like to extend our sincere regards to you.
Vietnam is a country with a considerable number of men, women, and children being trafficked
for sexual exploitation, forced labour, and organ harvesting. In the rural and border areas where
awareness of human trafficking is not acute, traffickers tend to acquire victims through deceit
and seduction.
Equipped with practical knowledge, project ‘Moving to Raise’ of Sustainable Development
Club has conducted six campaigns in three communes in Lao Cai and Yen Bai provinces to
provide an overview of human trafficking to the local community as well as teaching the children
in these communities prevention tools to protect themselves from being trafficked. The children
also received gifts to incentivize their school’s attendance because education is the key to beat
human traffickers.
Sustainable Development Club is conducting the final event of project ‘Moving to Raise’, a
dance performance. We would like to ask you to join hands in combating human trafficking in
Vietnam in general and in border areas in particular. By being part of this project, we will show
our unity against traffickers and this will carry a powerful message to the public.
Therefore, we cordially invite you to join us in our project ‘Moving to Raise’ as a sponsor to raise
awareness about and combat human trafficking. We promise to make the best use of your con-
tribution and will let you know how your contribution has made a difference in the lives of many
trafficked victims.
We hope to have you being part of this journey.
Best regards,
Ma Tran Hieu
President of Sustainable Development Club

Under the supervision of the Centre for Sustainable Development Studies (CSDS)
and with the financial support from YSEALI, Sustainable Development Club (SDC)
established the project “Moving to Raise” as a wake-up call about the alarming
situation of human trafficking in Vietnam.
CSDS - Centre for Sustainable Development Studies: a non-profit organization
founded in 2009, is interested in development issues in Vietnam such as raising awareness of protecting environment
against climate change, empowering women through sustainable livelihood, supporting children through social inclusion,
enhancing youth development through international youth exchanges and informal education.
YSEALI - Young Southeast Asian Leader Initiatives: in 2013, President Barack Obama announced that YSEALI aims at
training young leaders aged 18-35 in Southeast Asia. The United States of America supports these outstanding young people
by providing training programs and funding for the future community leaders and social entrepreneurs.

PROJECT
11. Sustainable Development Club
"Moving To Raise" project took place from Oct 2015 to
June 2016, at 3 schools in Lao Chai, Yen Bai; A Lu, and
Ngai Thau, Lao Cai.
The activities are as follows:
- Organize six campaigns for secondary students as
well as local residents in the central points of traffick-
ing
- Organize trainings for the core students on how to
combat human trafficking
- Collect pictures and stories from the field trips to
these provinces for the PR campaigns to attract the
attention of the public
- Provide basic necessities such as food, clothing,
school supplies for the students
- Provide gifts for the top students
We desire to bring changes in people’s perception
about human trafficking because of a lack of knowl-
edge about causes, costs, and consequences of
human trafficking, in particular:
- To raise awareness of people about human traffick-
ing, especially those living in border areas
- To reduce the prevalence of human trafficking by
educating people how to recognize the traffickers, their
tricks and providing prevention skills
- To enhance the role of every individual as an agent of
change in their community
- To attract more attention from the community and
society to the issue of human trafficking

ing, the purpose of traffickers, their tricks and
prevention tools
-Realized the danger of human trafficking
-Understood their fundamental human rights
12
-Equipped to recognize the recruitment tricks
of traffickers
-Received practical handbooks including
self-defense skills to protect themselves from
becoming victims of human trafficking
-Received training to become active agents of
change in their community
-Learnt to empathize with the victims of
human trafficking
-Encouraged to dream and to pursue their
dreams
13. For SDC
Eight months with 6 campaigns and fundraising activities, SDC accomplished:
- Connection to the youth to carry out awareness raising programs in the future
- More practical knowledge about human trafficking related to the local communities in
order to promote the project more effectively
- Initial success in calling for support from the whole community to join hands in combating
human trafficking
Sustainable Development Club 13
ACHIEVEMENT
15. Sustainable Development Club
At the end of “Moving to Raise” project, we would like to bid farewell through
a humane, professional and down-to-earth theatrical performance. The event
is also a present from Moving to Raise staff dedicated to human trafficking
victims.
PURPOSE
15
16. Sustainable Development Club
Despite the different majors and interests of Moving to Raise’s Organizing Team members, whenev-
er art is brought up, we all find our inner artistic self. Art brings us closer to other people because in
art, we can truly be ourselves.
After considering different types of art, we decided to conduct a theatrical performance to convey
our message to the public. We believe that this art form can successfully show the audience the
purpose of our project. The dancers can show the voicelessness of trafficked victims through moves
because the victims have lost their voices, their basic rights and their freedom. To them, every pray
is a hopeless scream from deep down inside their broken hearts.
The audience can feel the pain the victims feel through the dancer’s facial expression and body
language. With music and body movements, Theatrical Dance is a language to thoroughly describe
the pain and the hopelessness every human trafficking victim has to overcome. As their own inner
voice has been taken, the extreme innermost feelings will be shown through art. Theatrical Dance is
a special language we use to help and to encourage the victims to raise their voice to other people,
to life and to the society as a whole.
Art is made to transmit voices from heart to heart. Through the usage of art in general and Theatri-
cal Dance in particular, we hope that everyone will share humane sympathy, genuine empathy for
the victims of human trafficking, for the people whose human dignity was torn apart and human
rights had been taken away by ruthless criminals.
WHY THEATRICAL DANCE
16
17. Sustainable Development Club
They are HUMAN, they live in the same condition, but with a different view from the community,
their lives have been changed to two opposite directions because they were previously sold for
sex. Mẩy was saved, Thuỷ was saved too, but to them, being saved was not enough. They need
to be reborn in a community filled with compassion, sharing, and loving. Our project ‘Moving to
Raise’ along with other human rights organizations to combat human trafficking wants to prove
that the two girls in particular and the victims in general are not alone in this fight, they along with
other governmental and non-governmental organizations need to reunite to create changes in
our society, even if it just a baby step.
Hlub (means Love in Hmong) is a play about the lives of two girls – Thuỷ and Mẩy who had to face
many shocking and saddening truths about human trafficking.
Thuỷ, a Vietnamese joyful girl, with lots of dreams, got tricked into the trap of her own aunt and
became a prostitute in Taiwan. However, she was brave enough to flee from the trafficking network
and reunite with her family. After managing her way back home, she was shocked to find out that
her family, friends, neighbors did not accept her and she became the head of the sex trafficking
network recruiting young girls.
Mẩy, like Thuỷ, youthful, naive, and innocent, was tricked by Tùng, a recruiter of Thuỷ’s networking,
and was sold to a brothel. She had tried to escape the brothel so many times, but never succeeded.
Every time she was caught for running away, she was beaten harsher and harsher.
Fortunately, project “Moving to Raise”, with the purpose of raising awareness about human traf-
ficking, was able to meet Oanh, Mẩy’s sister and was informed about the dangerous situation of
Mẩy. The members of “Moving to Raise”, with the help of the provincial government and NGOs in
Vietnam, succeeded in saving Mẩy and helping her integrate into the community.
